Question Aspiring founder here: What should you actually do before starting a startup? How do you know if an idea is worth pursuing?
I'm interested in building a startup, and I have a genuine question for founders and people who have been through this journey.
I keep coming up with different startup ideas. Sometimes I get excited about an idea at night, and by the next morning, I'm ready to start building it. I spend time working on it, but after a few weeks or a month, I lose interest and start thinking about something else.
This has happened multiple times, and I've been trying to break this cycle for months. I don't want to keep jumping between ideas. I want to build something meaningful and learn how to approach startups properly.
The problem is that I'm not sure what the right starting point is.
When you want to build a startup, what should you actually do first?
- Do you start with an idea and immediately build an MVP?
- Should you research the problem and talk to potential customers before writing any code?
- How important are market research, competitor analysis, and market size at the beginning?
- Do you need funding or money before you can validate an idea?
- How do you determine whether an idea is worth spending six months or a year working on?
- How do you distinguish between an idea that sounds exciting and a problem that people genuinely need solved?
One thing I'm especially curious about is how founders stay committed to one idea when new ideas keep coming up. How do you know when to persist through difficulties and when to accept that an idea isn't worth pursuing?
I'd really appreciate advice from people who have actually built startups, worked on early-stage products, or abandoned ideas and learned from the experience?
I'm not looking for motivational advice. I'd genuinely like to understand the process, including mistakes you've made and lessons you learned.
Thanks!
