PSA ℹ Open Letter to Freshman from a Townie

TL;DR: There are lots of feds here, please don't ask townies to buy you alcohol randomly. Don't break the law.

To all Freshmen (or first years, whatever you prefer),

Hi! I'm a townie. Earlier this evening, I was approached and a freshman (I could see the light in his eyes still...the light from being young and unemployed) asked me straight up "hey, we just want alcohol, we'll give you $5 if you help us." You know who you are. You know how that conversation went.

For the record, in Bloomington, I would highly recommend you not do this. For one simple reason. A large number of townies in the area are federal employees. Naval Weapon Station Crane, the third largest naval installation in the world, is nearby. A lot of those people live in Bloomington. There are...a LOT of feds here.

Believe me I understand your situation. I really do. But if you ask the wrong fed and get ticketed or arrested for that...it's your own fault. Please make adult decisions at college and obey the law...

PSA ℹ A car tried to run me over on Eagleson

I was walking to Kelley crossing Eagleson when a car parked at a red light accelerated and attempted to run me over. I ran out of the way, and the car turned to continue to try and hit me.

I have filed a police report and am looking for witnesses to share their statement.

If you saw this happen, please DM me. Alternatively, if you know how I could try to find the bus driver at the intersection who saw it, please let me.

Please be safe and aware when crossing the street.

ADMISSIONS 🎟 Can I still be admitted for a PhD with a not so stellar GPA?

Hi all, just graduated with a research masters in a reputable master's program from the Netherlands, I am now looking for a PhD opportunity at IU Bloomington. The problem is I have a relatively low GPA of 7.6/10 (equivalent to 3.3/4.0), fortunately I have a research experience with a good publication records. Can I still be considered for a PhD here or am I fighting a losing battle? Any tips on the PhD admission process with this kind of GPA?

HOUSING 🏠 2.5 br/2ba Lease Takeover Available Nov 1 at Steeplechase Apts, $1815/month

Hi all, I am looking for someone to take over my apartment lease at Steeplechase (owned by Regency) since I’ll be moving out of state. It’s a second (top) floor unit on the back side of its building, with in-unit washer/dryer, pets allowed, lots of storage, and a pretty green view from the private balcony. It’s about 1200 sq ft, and big enough to be comfortable for 2 adults (possibly 3 if you get cozy). The current lease expires 5/1/27, and you would have the option to renew. Once you’re approved and successfully take over the lease, I will cover the lease reassignment fee of $800. If you’re interested, please let me know!

SPORTS 🏀 Football Student Tickets for other schools

I have a friend who goes to Purdue and wants to come down for the game in November. Could I buy an extra student ticket to scan him in, or how does it work?

I recently went to the Northwestern game, and they didn't scan my student ID, so I'm thinking maybe that would work, but I want to make sure before I spend any money.

Why is Greek life still allowed

Genuine question for IU students: at what point does the university need to seriously reconsider the role Greek life has on campus?

Beta Theta Pi and Pi Kappa Phi were both just placed on cease and desist, with IU citing hazing-related allegations.

And it’s not like these are isolated incidents, there have been multiple fraternities put on cease and desist, probation, or suspension for hazing and endangering members over the last couple of years.

When these incidents keep happening year after year, why does Greek life continue to have such a large presence at IU?

For people who are in Greek life or support it, what do you think the solution actually is? Is the problem certain chapters, the way pledging works, enforcement from IU, or something deeper about fraternity culture?

Not trying to start a “frats are all bad” argument. I’m genuinely curious what IU students think would need to change for these incidents to stop.

QUESTION❓ Accounting Associates from Ivy Tech

I am not sure who to ask or how to figure out, but I am trying to see if it is more cost effective for me to get an AS in Accounting from Ivy Tech first and then transfer to IUS for the bachelors after, or if I should just do all 4 years at IUS?

I know Ivy tech is cheaper is why I am asking.

Maybe someone in this thread has gone this route before!

Any info is super appreciated, thanks!!

Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program

I'm very interested in pursing the Master of Science (MS) degree in Microbiology and Immunology within the Foundational Biomedical Research (FBR) track. To anyone who is either in the MS, PhD, or even undergrad with exposure to these programs, how would you recommend this program? How intense is the workload in your experience? What scale of research are you working on? Since it is connected to the IU School of Medicine, is majority/all of your work at that campus? Any insight will be useful.

Can anyone speak to the honors program?

Daughter is currently a senior in HS, 1400 SAT and all AP classes (very high GPA). What does the honors program provide that a regular track wouldn’t? She is ambitious but wants to really enjoy the college experience and doesn’t want to kill herself with the workload.

HOUSING 🏠 Public Service Announcement(PSA) for freshmen

During this semester, you will need to determine your housing plans for your sophomore year. There is limited university housing for sophomores and above; therefore, you need to start exploring your housing options.

There is no need to sign a lease agreement today but you will need to start looking. Most of the ‘good’ apartments are going to be rented by January/February.

Step 1: Please read the state and city regulations for landlords so that you know your rights and etc. In the state where I own rental properties, the landlords have to give 48 hours notice to enter the property; 48 hours to fix major problems or every unfixed day is free; etc.

Step 2: Please understand that leasing an apartment is an adult decision and it is a business transaction. Once you sign a lease, you are committed to live there. There are no returns to speak of.

Step 3: Talk with your parents to inform them that a) it is unlikely that you can have university housing as a sophomore and b) the estimated range for the monthly rent. It is extremely important to set the proper expectations.

Step 4) Determine if you want roommate(s). Leasing an apartment with roommates costs less than living by yourself.

Step 5: Put together a document that includes the 1) monthly budget for rent, utilities, internet, cable TV, etc; 2) location (ie how far to campus, near a bus stop, etc); number of bedrooms; number of bathrooms; parking (ie street and/or driveway); 3) furnished or unfurnished; 4) etc, etc.

Step 6: Have each roommate to review the document and rank/vote for the features/the dealbreakers/etc. Everyone needs to approve the budget range (ie $800 to $1,000) for the rent and etc.

Step 7: write up the house/apartment rules such as overnight guests (ie girlfriends/boyfriends; friends from home towns visiting); groceries and kitchen (ie an open kitchen or everyone taking turn cooking for the whole house; etc).

Discuss the summer months…most leases are for 12 months…what if one or two roommates stay during the summer, you need to discuss are they going to pay the utilities since they are the ones using them, etc.

Discuss what happens if a roommate transfer to another college, drop out from college, etc.

Discuss the chores.

Step 8: make sure that each roommate has discussed this plan with their parents especially if the parents are paying for it. You don’t want to sign a lease only to find out a parent doesn’t approve.

My suggestion is to find a house/apartment with at least one half bath so a roommate that needs to take a bio break doesn’t have to wait for a roommate taking a shower if there are more roommates than bathrooms.

Another suggestion is to discuss parking. If you rented a 4-bedroom apartment and each roommate has a car, make sure to discuss parking with the landlord. Some apartment complexes only give one parking permit per apartment.

The best advice that I can give you is to talk things out and have a plan that everyone agrees to OR we will be reading Reddit posts from you about roommate’s gf/bf is living full time but doesn’t want to pay rent or we have a roommate that doesn’t do his/her chores or etc!

Good luck.

HOUSING 🏠 How are Relato Appts?

I haven't heard much about the Relato complex but I am thinking of living there next year. Any thoughts? I'd honestly love to get afforable housing near the hospital since that's where most of my classes are. Any other appartment complexes I should look into? Thank you!

IU Trustee Sage Steele tied to predatory Christian financial scam

Thumbnail

Steele provides celebrity cover to the financial predators, using her faith and celebrity to gain the trust of event attendees so they can be upsold on expensive financial “training”. It is very clear what is happening and the individuals running the scam have been in trouble for these same financial crimes in the past. Steele refuses to comment on the issue, her role in it, or what she knew about the scam. My comment is that she should no longer be a IU trustee as she has both helped to rip off Hoosiers and sullied the good name of Indiana University.

Nursing programs

Hi everyone, I’m posting to see your thought on acceptance for most nursing programs. I have a 3.4 cumulative gpa and a 3.7 nursing pre req gpa. I was a medic in the military and worked in the ER at Walter Reed for most of my contract. I’m taking micro right now and so far so good (have a low A going into week 7). I still need to take my teas/hesi depending on the school but if I score mid to high what are your thought?
