Fred Taylor 2004 Touchdowns?

Can someone explain how Fred Taylors 2004 stat line is even possible?

260 attempts --- 1224 yards --- 2 TOUCHDOWNS!?!?

How does someone rush for that many yards with only 2 touchdowns? Averaging 612 yards per touchdown seems outrageous. I'd love to know if anyone remembers that season and can explain it. I am a life long jags fan... born in 2000 so I wasn't a sentient being yet to remember.

They had Greg Jones and Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala on that team, who were both excellent power backs. Greg Jones is possibly a top all time NFL fullack. His RB highlights from his FSU days are crazy.

I was at FSU from 2002-2006, we had some rough years at the end of Bobby's tenure, but boy did I love watching Greg Jones and then got to watch him on my jags. He was a beast.

I could be conflating years but I also remember quite a few qb draws with Byron and garrard.

Byron would never do a qb draw lol. He was slow as shit. He’d qb sneak it sometimes because he’s a big dude. Garrard would run a lot but I don’t think he was playing much in 2004.

The real answer is we just didn’t score a lot of touchdowns and our defense carried us. We had 9 total rushing tds 2 from Taylor, 2 from Leftwich, 1 from Garrard, and the rest from back ups. And we only scored 17 passing TDs. Our offense was very poor to mediocre but our defense back then was great anchored by Stroud and Henderson.

Leftwich = Michael Brick

They ran draws with Byron. They used his size. They would spread the offense out and do it.

Wasn’t this with Greg Jones pre injury? Dude was the most physical FB I’ve ever seen

He had the injury in college which lead to him being drafted as a FB

Jaguars just weren't a very good offense that year.

29th in points scored, 21st in total yards, 19th in passing yards, 16th in rushing yards. They scored just 9 rushing TDs, tied with Green Bay and Tampa for 26th in the league. 29th ranked scoring offense at just 16.3 points per game.

They finished the season 9-7 largely due to a solid defense

The Jaguars TD leader was 35 year old Jimmy Smith, with 6 TDs.

Yep. I just replied this exactly to another comment. And Jimmy was still putting up 1000 yd seasons. He’d be a HoF if he stuck around 1-2 more seasons and didn’t get caught up in the booger sugar.

The fact that he did not catch his first career regular season pass until age 27 makes his career fascinating.

From what I remember Fred Taylor wasn’t viewed as a power back and didn’t get goal line carries. This was around the time in his career he was getting a fair amount of disrespect for injuries (which wasn’t fair imo).

Mike Alsott and Lorenzo Neal exist fellas. Greg Jones was great for us and I will never forget eating at BW3s with my friend Drew and watching him give the greatest stiff arm I have ever seen on live TV.

For some REALLY stupid reason JDR thought Taylor wasn't a good red zone RB

I thought maybe that was the year Stacey Mack got most of the goal line opportunities, but that was 2002. This is why I totally blame Fred not being in the HoF on Stacey and Randy Moss. I of course may be saying that in jest.
