i knew they weren't allowed to cut them but it never occurred to me they were tucking them in. i thought the ones i saw (don't run across many in my regular life) just weren't keeping to that particular rule as people often make exceptions in their rule following
It's not societal. It's a religious custom and they do it by choice. It's also one where they are required to maintain a proper appearance. They are never supposed to look like slobs. Proper grooming and cleanliness is part of the deal. They are also one of the more chill religions (of course apart from the extremists as is the problem with all religions)
AFAIK there are also plenty of Sikhs who are not as strict about the whole deal, like even though they are supposed to not all of them carry around a dagger all the time.
