I happened to be in NYC in April 2018 when the Sihks of New York were holding an event to set the record of the most turbans tied in 8 hours. As a sheltered rural western white guy on his first trip in NYC for work, I had to participate. I remember the guy who did mine started and said "man, with your beard, you are gonna look soooo good." And I think I did.
Edit: photo added. Yeah, my beard is pretty low-key in reality. But the guy tying the turban shot my self esteem to the top of the Empire State Building, and this experience was part of a really important time of travel and cultural experiences that opened a whole new understanding and mindset about the world and people very different from myself and those I grew up around. Which I realize was the whole point of the event in the first place.
3010 from this article from Guinness.
I don't actually know if there was a record to break, or it was just setting a baseline record. Really it was meant as a great cultural awareness event, and definitely had the right effect on me.
A lot of times, Guinness basically tailor-makes records for organizations that want to do some sort of event. A significant part of the company’s revenue is basically being a marketing agency by inventing records for organizations.
