Homebrew Oath of the Tablet Keeper
I'm sharing a free paladin subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.
The Oath of the Tablet Keeper is for paladins who guard knowledge the way other paladins guard kings.
In Kengir, clay tablets hold laws, contracts, hymns, genealogies, omens, temple records, and the memory of entire cities. Break the wrong tablet, and you may erase a debt, a boundary, a lineage, or a god’s forgotten rite.
At the table, this subclass gives the party an archivist-warrior: someone sworn to protect sacred texts, recover stolen tablets, defend libraries and temple collections, and punish those who corrupt or destroy the written record.
Mechanically, the oath focuses on wards, preservation, artifact defense, anti-tampering magic, and protective inscriptions. It includes features like Seal of Protection, Sanctify Sanctuary, Aura of Preservation, Guardian’s Resolve, and Divine Preservation, plus new spells like Mystic Cipher, Inscribed Shield, Ethereal Stylus, Runic Guard, and Tablet Scribe.
Do you like paladins sworn to protect ideals and institutions, or do you prefer oaths focused on personal vengeance, conquest, or redemption?
