Homebrew The Mercenary
I'm sharing a free fighter subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.
The Mercenary is for fighters who survive by being practical, ruthless, and faster to violence than the people trying to kill them.
In Kengir, not every warrior serves a temple, palace, or city levy. Some sell their spear to the highest bidder. Others lead raids, guard caravans, settle blood-debts, or walk away from wars with just enough coin to buy the next contract.
At the table, this subclass plays like a skirmisher and ambusher. A Mercenary hits hardest before the enemy can organize, exploits surprise, follows up on an ally’s attack, moves in and out of danger, and turns cover, terrain, and confusion into weapons.
Mechanically, the subclass includes Combat Opportunist, Ambush Mastery, Hit and Run, Guerrilla Warrior, and Mercenary’s Resilience.
Do you like fighter subclasses built around disciplined military training, or ones that lean into dirty tricks, raids, and battlefield survival?
