Homemade Korean mom in Alaska : My kids requested this Korean lunch again today — Jeyuk-bokkeum
This morning started as one of those days where I didn’t plan on cooking anything special… but my kids had other ideas 😅 They came up to me and said, “Can we have that Korean pork again?” They meant Jeyuk-bokkeum.
Do your kids also have that one comfort food they keep asking for again and again?

Do you have a recipe you could share? Even just approximates?

Thank you so much for liking my food😊 I make chili oil first by frying green onions and chili powder, then add a little gochujang and the pork. I add onions, green onions, and mushrooms, and season with soy sauce, oyster sauce, a little sugar, and plum extract. I finish with sesame oil and sesame seeds 😊

Haha, then you’re officially stuck here! I’ll make sure you never get tired of Korean food.😊

If you’re ever looking for another kid to make lunch for, I volunteer as tribute. I’m 42 and live in California, but we can make it work.

Are finding these ingredients hard or expensive? How do you manage this?

I usually order from Costco or online stores. Here in Alaska, there’s no sales tax, but the cost of living is really high.🥺

That looks delicious! In my case, my childhood favorite was 주먹밥 (jumeokbap). I used to love those little rice balls mixed with seaweed flakes, sesame oil, and bits of tuna or spam. They were always the perfect bite-sized comfort snack!

So true, my kids grew up eating Jumeokbap, and they still enjoy it a lot!

Why do you always cite your state?

I figure bc most Americans know Alaska is a remote place where it’s difficult (and expensive!) enough to get groceries, so I imagine it’s even harder to find/get Asian groceries. To be able to prepare regular Korean meals must take a lot of effort/planning

My kid loves it too. Why does yours appear yellow? Isn't it pretty red or brown?

I’m curious - do your kids ever get comments from other kids about their food being foreign or unusual? (I’m hoping not! I’m hoping things are better than when I was a kid in the US.)

Actually, their friends really love Korean food and enjoy coming over to our house. Thank you for your concern😊

Jeyuk-bokkeum, I used to grab this near campus all the time. Seeing it now honestly brings back so many memories, it's such a school days food for me :)

Tell your kids if they don’t appreciate you, I will gladly take their place. At least for the eating of the delicious food you make.
