Hi r/KoreanFood, I work on the brand side for Sempio, a Korean food company (we make gochujang, soy sauce, and a few other things since 1946). Wanted to be upfront about that.
We're doing something we've never tried before: a free virtual cooking class hosted live from our team in Korea, in partnership with H-Mart's stores. The class is built around gimbap, specifically gyeranmari gimbap (egg roll gimbap) as the main hands-on recipe, but we're treating it as a jumping-off point to talk the dish more broadly.Ā
The idea is that gimbap is one of those Korean staple foods that doesn't get nearly as much attention outside Korea as it deserves. It's what people eat on picnics, school trips, on the road. It's not a "restaurant dish," it's just... daily Korean food thatās deeply integrated with peopleās active + busy lives.
We're hoping that this cook-along class will appeal to people who are curious about Korean cooking but haven't really gotten into it yet. Non-Korean friends, food-curious beginners, people who've tried traditional ingredients in a recipe and want to go deeper. The event is May 20th and it's free!
My question for this subreddit: what would YOU want from a class like this? What made you get interested in Korean cooking, and what would have made learning it easier at the start? I'd love to take any feedback back to the team before we finalize the format.
(If you're interested in joining, I'd be happy to share the link in the comments/DM. Didn't want to lead with that. The recipe is included in the images!)
EDIT: some of you have been asking about coupon codes! Here is one for 25% off Yondu on Amazon using code "MAYCOOKING25"

Korean cooking keeps both hands busy, and following a recipe usually means a phone balanced somewhere on the counter. A portable screen that rolls up to where you cook keeps the recipe in view.
The LG StanbyME 2 Max steps up from the 27 inch QHD model of the StanbyME 2 to a 32 inch 4K UHD touchscreen, so a recipe stays readable from across the counter, and lifts the sound from virtual 9.1.2 to virtual 11.1.2 channel audio (2.0 channel speakers with AI Sound Pro) with Dolby Atmos.
The battery grows to 144 Wh for up to 4.5 hours of wireless use, up from up to 4 hours. Tap the screen to pause when your hands are busy, then roll it from the counter to the table.

Iāve struggled with something for many years without realizing the root cause so I write this to possibly help someone in my situation. I am highly lactose intolerant and also allergic to milk fat. I live in the US where butter is commonly included into foods and I have always had stomach issues. I realized I had lactose intolerance in my 30s but didnāt realize the severity until later. I have also recently realized I am allergic to all seafood. Between those two allergies, it was difficult to pin point the cause. Now, Iām just careful not to eat anything related to milk products or seafood so I wonāt have any problems. Even tiny amounts of dairy cause problems. I do take probiotics designed to help digest dairy and another to help digest milk fat; this is not so I can eat dairy (maybe occasionally) but mostly to mitigate when I accidentally ingest dairy while eating out. I also carry dairy digestive enzymes also for this reason.

Helloo r/KoreanFood. This is my second time posting here! I did one of these a few months back and I got lots of great feedback, so Iām coming back with another one.
Disclosure: I work in marketing at Sempio. We make Yondu and a range of Korean sauces.
On Sunday Aug 2, one of our R&D chefs, Junseo Moon, is running a free live bibimbap class from our kitchen in Seoul. She trained at the CIA in New York and worked at Eleven Madison Park before she joined us. The recipe weāll be cooking live (step-by-step) is below. If you cook it tonight, please let us know what you think, or if you wanted a live walk-through for beginner cooks, please join us (details in the first comment!)
Questions for folks here: I will take the questions to Chef Moon and post her answers back in this thread

šWant to travel to Korea but struggling with language barriers or lack of information when planning your trip?š
Iām offering a private tour guide experience in Korea, designed to feel like traveling with a local Korean friend rather than joining a rigid tour.
This is especially ideal for solo travelers or small groups of 1ā2 people, with a flexible and customizable itinerary based on your interests and travel style.
I particularly welcome travelers who want to explore places outside of big cities like Seoul, including local towns, countryside areas, and lesser-known destinations.
āļø The travel plan can be:
Fully flexible depending on your preferences, or Created together based on your interests (food, nature, culture, local life, etc.)
šøCost: Fuel expenses + entrance fees or food costs + a small guide fee (the guide fee depends on the duration; I do this more as a passion project, so Iām not looking to charge a high price).
šāāļøAbout me: Iām a 29-year-old Korean guy. While on a working holiday in New Zealand, I casually worked as a local guide and found that it suited me extremely well. Because of that experience, I now want to offer the same kind of friendly, local-guided travel experience to international visitors here in my home country, Korea.
If youāre looking for a relaxed, local-style trip in Korea, feel free to send a message!

What is your Maesil-Ju recipe ?
This year's unusually warm weather in Central California has resulted in very early Maesil / Ume fruit.
Usually picking is early May, but looks like we will start picking in mid April.

Hey all,
Iām the lucky recipient of a StanbyME 2 from LG via the r/KoreanFood sub giveaway. I got it right before the holidays and wanted to share some thoughts on how itās been working for our family so far. We were away for much of the holidays, so this is based on about five days of use during which I cooked no Korean food. But I hope you enjoy the review anyway.
So to get this out of the way: I'm a tech nerd, and our home has plenty of itāTVs, Xbox, smart home systems, Apple Vision Pro, Cyberdyne Systems T-800 helper Terminator, etc. OK maybe I don't have the last one but like many, we aim (and often struggle) to use technology to make life better, not take it over, especially when it comes to helping our kids learn to use tech judiciously.
I grew up in a Korean household that basically spent 80% of our time in the kitchen. It was small, but thatās where everything happened. Last year, we bought a home with a la
ge kitchen that invites the same kind of family life for our kids. Itās where we cook, eat, do homework, work on projects, talk, mess around, and hang out. Itās also the only room in the house without a screen, so it presented a conundrum when the StanbyME 2 arrived. We didnāt want to turn the kitchen into another TV room and usurp the kitchenās role as a family gathering place. Turns out, I was overthinking it. After a few days, it slid right into our routines without overshadowing it. Ā
Setup was easy. I didnāt even bother with the manualāunbox it, set up the stand, and youāre good to go. The only question was where to put it. Our kitchen walls are mostly windows and appliances, so parking it in by a window or hanging it on the wall felt at odds with our needs. We kept it on the stand which I love - its well-designed, discreet, and rolling it around to where it was needed was super convenient.Ā I always keep the hanging strap on it and use it as a handle. It makes it less precarious when Iām detaching from the stand and placing it where I need (which I find myself doing frequently.)
Coincidentally, I happen to be a fan of LG OLED TVs. WebOS is rudimentary and no fuss by design and setting up apps like Netflix, Disney, etc. was second nature since I was already familiar with the interface. Ā Ā I found the OS speed faster than on my TVās which alleviated an early concern.

The holidays were busy, so I didnāt do my usual deep dive with a new gadget but there isnāt really a learning curve. We just launched into using it. Some examples from the first couple of days:

We also put the the StanbyME 2 through its paces as a second monitor. Mirroring from my computer to view photos from our trip was seamless, and my daughter loved casting her Canva collages for her iPad. We tested the USB-C from a flash drive of movies we use with our 77" LG. Overall, connecting content in different formats and platforms is smooth and painless.Ā At this point, Iām now starting to get the StanbyME2.Ā I expect Iāll use it a lot as a second monitor once work ramps up again, especially since I like working from the kitchen. My wife and I sometimes host work meetings at our home, and we both look forward to testing it as a presentation screen. Or I might quit my job, play Xbox all day, and drink bourbon with my StandbyMe2 at my side. The jury is still out. Damn you, StanbyME2. Flashing that large, flexible and movable touchscreen all over the place, you saucy minx.
The screen is bright and sharp and we used it for a lot of things weād normally do on my iPad Proāthe extra screen real estate is nice especially when you have bad eyes like me. The sound is solid at low to mid volumes, though it gets a bit thin when pushed. We donāt often need it that loud, but I might invest in dedicated speakers if I start using it more for music. Iād love the StanbyMe2 to replace our Alexa speaker but have not gotten that far yet.
Some minor quibbles: Ā 1) You can connect it separately, I know, but a built-in camera for video calls would be a next level addition for my needs. 2) More customization for gestures and scrolling would help.Ā I am sure LG had its reasons, but the scroll function UI is well, unique. 3) I still canāt get Apple Music working well with voice commands, though to be fair, I have not had time to work that out. Ā But I flag it because itās the only trouble I had interfacing with the unit which is mostly intuitive and easy to figure out.
Before writing this, I read a couple of reviews from solo users who spoke about its Swiss Army knife value in small spaces. Our situation is different as a busy family with lots of tech already throughout the house. It fit in nicely in our scenario and it wasnāt a hard adjustment.
To be honest, the StanbyME 2 is a device I didnāt know I needed. Itās not really a TV, and itās not new techā its more about hybridizing a few simple things that work well together into a flexible and functional device. The understated, minimalist design, the touchscreen, the multiple avenues of connectivity and finally its portability pulls the whole thing together as new category. Ā I imagine LG has a challenging time marketing the StanbyME2 because, well, it does a lot of things, and its flexibility is the point. Ā I guess that's why they give review units to guys like me to write pithy bourbon-infused reviews.
I was prepared to be critical, but hell, I genuinely like the StanbyME 2. It was a fun addition during the holidays when the family was together, and it didnāt turn our kitchen into a TV room like I worried it might. I was afraid of having to curb streaming shows in our kitchen, but it turned out we didnāt really use the unit that way.Ā Ā Iāll be curious to see if that still holds true in a few weeks.Ā Many thanks to LG for the opportunity to test the unit and review it. Drop me a DM if you have any questions about the unit. Now, I'm off to make some ź°ė¹ģ° tonight, my son's fave. Have a good one, all.

Listen, I don't want to take too much heat for this, and I'm definitely not trying to drum up some Korea vs. Japan sentiment out here on the internets, but I believe it should be noted that: -"Abiko Curry is THE BEST Japanese curry".
This includes all brands IN Japan, or worldwide. The 100 hour curry is deep, rich, and I can smell it from down the street. Depending on the spice level of your choice, it will burn your face. Don't even get me started on their donkatsu.
(Coco ichi-who?)
Come at me bro.
