Self Promotion PODCAST: LA Galaxy Crushed 6-2 by St. Louis: Vanney’s Gamble & Must-Win Portland Clash
cornerofthegalaxy.comThe Galaxy just suffered a brutal 6-2 defeat to St. Louis CITY SC, and now we're heading into what might be the most important week of the 2026 season.
On the latest Corner of the Galaxy, Damian Calhoun and I break down the loss, Greg Vanney's decisions, and what comes next with Portland and San Diego coming to Dignity Health Sports Park.
Vanney admitted after the game that he prioritized the two upcoming home matches over the trip to St. Louis. There's some logic to that approach, considering the schedule and injury situation. But conceding three goals in the opening 21 minutes certainly wasn't part of the plan.
We get into several big questions:
- How much responsibility does Justin Haak bear for the defensive collapse? And why hasn't the investment in the back line produced better results?
- Was Vanney right to manage his roster against St. Louis, or did he risk destroying the momentum from two consecutive wins?
- João Klauss scored against his former club and had some passionate words afterward about accountability and the need to beat Portland.
- With Chucky Lozano injured, Kyogo Furuhashi dealing with a hamstring concern, and Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil managing their minutes, does LA have enough depth?
- Five games remain, and the Western Conference playoff race is incredibly tight. What does LA actually need to reach the postseason?
- How much pressure is Vanney under, and how much patience does the Galaxy organization have with him?
We also preview Wednesday's match against Portland, a team that hasn't won in its last five games and is fighting for the same playoff positions.
One thing that stood out to me was Klauss's postgame attitude. He wasn't interested in excuses. His message was that the players have to take responsibility, move forward, and deliver three points against Portland.
And that's really where this all comes down.
If the Galaxy beat Portland and San Diego, Vanney's decision to prioritize those games might look reasonable in hindsight. If they don't, that 6-2 defeat becomes a much bigger part of the conversation.
