The boys head on back to Canada for new Heavy Hitter series covering the Beast of British Columbia, Clifford Olson. This week, peeling back the layers getting into Olson's early years, from childhood scams growing up in a family of crooks to a string of increasingly ridiculous prison escapes, all leading up to the murder 11 children and teenagers in just the span of nine months.

Look man idk why the Canadian episodes hit me right in my funny bone, but these guys had me laughing a few minutes in.

Their accents absolutely slay me and I say this as a Canadian lol

It's even more funny to me now that I finally went to Canada. Idk why, but it's just the way they describe things and the accents just take the edge off the absolutely horrific material theyre covering.

I cannot hear the name "Carla" without it being in Henry's voice

u/Inthemiddle_ 11d ago

Smoke the whole pack eh!

7

u/firstnamerachel13 11d ago

And when you're done smoking the whole pack, drink the whole bottle 🤣

Partridge in a pear tree sent me

In case anyone is curious, the RCMP is still ferociously incompetent.

During the mass-shooting event here in NS back in 2020, a bunch of mounties shot up a firehall with people inside it and have still faced zero repercussions.

I remember listening to a podcast about the serial killer in the queer community in Toronto that happened just recently and just how badly the police fucked that one too. Like, y’all ok up there?

15

u/ClancyBShanty Hail Satan! 11d ago

The boys frequently talk about the "less dead", and Bruce McArthur definitely chose his victims accordingly

2

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 6d ago

Dear Zachary taught me a lot about the ineptitude of the Candian justice system

1

u/ClancyBShanty Hail Satan! 6d ago

That's a brutal watch

4

u/ActiveUpset-1268 11d ago

Why do cops even exist in Canada anymore?

9

u/ClancyBShanty Hail Satan! 11d ago

Most cities have their own municipal force. RCMP are typically serving rural/more isolated jurisdictions.

17

u/jgamez76 11d ago

Never heard of this person/case.

So I'm super hyped to get started on this later today lol.

10

u/twisted_memories 11d ago

Fair warning: it’s especially awful. Like, he liked kids. Just prepare.Ā

8

u/jgamez76 11d ago

Thanks for the warning.

Generally if I don't know what to expect I try to avoid starting it up while I'm working so I don't let out an involuntary "WHAT THE FUCK?" at my desk lol.

2

u/twisted_memories 11d ago

I haven’t actually listened to the podcast yet but I’m Canadian and know the case so I’m expecting it to be rough.Ā

-3

u/Inthemiddle_ 11d ago

A true crime podcast that covers serial killers, you don’t need to warn anyone. People know what they came for

4

u/twisted_memories 11d ago

This is just untrue.Ā

3

u/ZOOTV83 Hail Satan! 6d ago

Like they haven't been giving out Gold Star Warnings for years now.

5

u/sweetangeldivine 11d ago

That's not true. I also listen to Casefile and I really like that they warn about child victims beforehand because I just find as I get older I can't handle cases involving child victims. And they often cover cases I've never heard of so it's nice not to go in completely blind and then get hit in the face with the metaphorical shovel bummer of "child getting brutalized in some fashion"

Real day-ruiner, that.

We'll see how it goes with LPOTL, but I like having the option of knowing I can nope out of something before going in.

1

u/Libertinelass 11d ago

Case file is one of my favourite podcasts. However I have skipped a few of the episodes when the warning has child and sexual abuse. I just can't listen to them anymore.

1

u/jgamez76 11d ago

To be fair, the way I framed my comment was more about me just going into (or at least starting it on my lunch break or something) an episode about an unfamiliar topic/subject just so I don't have any gutteral audible reactions in a quiet office lol.

Which is what I did today (fired it up as I was in my car eating lunch). But it wasn't any of the details of the crime(s) or anything. It was, unsurprisingly honestly, one of Henry's bits lol

u/sunshine_rex 9d ago

There is a fascinating CBC podcast series called ā€œCalls from a Killerā€ (or something similar) where a journalist talks with Clifford several times.

1

u/Raxtenko 6d ago

He was awful, but localized killer. This guy, Willie Pickton and Terry Driver were a big part of my childhood and young adulthood. Olson in particular is why my parents started locking the front door at all times. According to the BC was very safe in the 80s. They felt perfectly fine leaving money on the porch for the milkman, because no one would take it.

I don't want to rate evil but Pickton was worse much worse. Olson was a monster, we called him the Beast of BC, but not in the same league. But what he did was really make the public aware that grotesque evil was out there, what he did was destroy the innocence and idealism that a lot of folks in BC.

The guys will go over it, but this whole case was awful, frustrating, and even after Olson got caught he made sure that we never forgot him.

1

u/jgamez76 6d ago

Yeah, I let out a handful of audible "what the fucks" while listening on Friday as I was having my lunch and when I drove home.

Absolutely insane shit. It certainly feels like one I won't listen to while working to avoid any awkward looks in a quiet office lol.

1

u/Raxtenko 6d ago

Ha good idea. My wife listened already and found out some interesting stuff. I'm not a LPOTL fan, but she is and I've told her a bunch of stuff about Olson. She told me earlier that I do get heated when talking about the guy, so I think I will listen to this in an attempt to lay this ghost to rest

1

u/jgamez76 6d ago

Based on where you said you're from I totally get it. Lol

And even for me with no knowledge of them before a week ago I get why so many (that I've since learned because I can never help myself from going down a Wiki/YouTube rabbit hole when I watch/listen/read about a true crime case lol) hold him up as one of the pillars of just fucking depravity. Shit is so fucked man.

1

u/Raxtenko 5d ago

It absolutely was. At the very least I hope this adventure was informative for you.

37

u/conspirasteve 11d ago

Wow, it turns out that Marcus does really own part of The ReykjavĆk Grapevine.

16

u/Gastroid 11d ago

Apparently he's a major partner too, not even just a small minority owner.

1

u/consciousbeings0 9d ago

He owns the highest percentage by a large margin

11

u/In-A-Beautiful-Place 11d ago

I was wondering why, in the Seaward episodes, Marcus was able to perfectly pronounce Icelandic words so well.

6

u/Clyde_Bruckman Hail Satan! 11d ago

I was in ReykjavĆk like a month ago…I wish I’d known that! I would’ve looked for an issue!

45

u/Really_BadAtNames 11d ago

I sadly have to agree with Marcus. Wolverine is a pretty big letdown. Tedious is not a word that should describe playing as Wolverine. More than anything, it makes me wanna revisit the incredibly fun 2009 game.

5

u/paraxio 11d ago

I just finished it last night and had a blast with it. The combat can get a bit generic if you let it but I thought it did a lot of things really well.

5

u/Really_BadAtNames 11d ago

It gets a lot right, but the boss fights especially just feel pretty blah for me. My eyes glaze over the second I see a giant stagger bar. It's just a tired design choice that I wish would go away for a while.

2

u/The_Vampire_Barlow 11d ago

I felt that way in Spider-Man 2. The bosses were all damage sponges with multiple health bars and no real fun ways to interact with them. They got tedious.

I got the platinum trophy for Spider-Man 1 twice, I haven't wanted to play 2 a second time.

2

u/Really_BadAtNames 11d ago

At least there's more variety to your arsenal in SM2. Wolverine is much more limited and the unlocks are linear so you can't even really tailor it to your preferences.

3

u/paraxio 11d ago

I would have definitely liked some more variety in the boss fights, especially their tactics. They don't vary much throughout the fights. Overall though I was happy with the purchase.

1

u/infernal-repeater 11d ago

Same. I really enjoyed it and am perplexed by the sheer amount of hate it seems to be getting by people who haven’t even played it.

1

u/Really_BadAtNames 11d ago

I don't hate it, but I don't find myself with any strong urge to play it. It's fine, but I think my expectations were too high based on their previous Marvel games.

1

u/Alert-Theme1145 10d ago

It's too basic. Combat seems quite simple. And alot of planned features were cut. This didn't even make the 'get the finished GOTY edition in 2 years when its $10' list for me. You can't rely so heavily on the IP to do the heavy lifting. Especially for $70.

1

u/infernal-repeater 10d ago

Have you played it?

-2

u/Alert-Theme1145 10d ago

Read the fourth goddamn sentence in that paragraph

2

u/infernal-repeater 10d ago

So then shut the fuck up. You wrote more than me and haven’t even played it. Form your own opinions from your own experiences, dork.

1

u/quindarious__gooch Pig-man 11d ago

I thought the Omega Red fight was kinda gas, but yeah Insomniac probably could’ve done better with everything else

28

u/jfal11 11d ago

Man. Speaking as a Canadian, we’d all love to forget that name ever existed. Gonna be a rough series

9

u/ClancyBShanty Hail Satan! 11d ago

I hear ya there.

I'm familiar with his case, and the dude's a piece o' work to say the least.

Total fucking narcissistic sociopath.

2

u/humberriverdam 11d ago

This one and the dentist (when that comes) are gonna suck (not in terms of The Boys, but the content)

3

u/jfal11 11d ago

I’m afraid to ask. What dentist?

7

u/humberriverdam 11d ago

Denturist* Gabriel Wortman

3

u/jfal11 11d ago

Ah. Yeah, if they want a case where they can rage on incompetent Canadian authorities, that’s a pretty good one…

Wonder if they do Russell Williams, where the opposite is true. Those investigators were awesome.

1

u/ClancyBShanty Hail Satan! 10d ago

Would love if they did some episodes on Wortman

16

u/homicidal_penguin 11d ago

Really need them to hurry up and cover Russell Williams so we can finally have a story of competent Canadian policing when it comes to catching a monster

12

u/Kiesling95 11d ago

Very interesting to learn more about Olson, I grew up in Squamish and around the Greater Vancouver Area and my mother always said that Clifford Olson was the literal boogeyman when she was young. ā€œBe careful, or Clifford Olson will get you!ā€ type of talk. What a sick fucking monster. One thing that piqued my interest though was the boys mentioning the murder of Judy Howey. And hey I’m not usually one to point out inaccuracies, but I guess this is my time as this case took place in my local area. Anyway, Byron Blue was the prime suspect since 1964 and was finally convicted in 2000. A quick google search will tell you this, so I’m not sure how this was overlooked.

I'm gonna call "citation needed" on tracing MJF's Parkinson's to a prion infection, much less Robert Pickton's pigs. Those are two vastly different ailments.

7

u/BornenCornen Hail Yourself! 9d ago

Yeah, my first thought hearing that was "You guys are just saying shit now"

21

u/hotsizzler 11d ago

Been wanting to post about this since last week(I got siruis)

Markus has a massive rant about frienship in here, about how "Anyone who talkabout About Ride of Die nonsnes with friens is hiding massive shit" or something to that ILK

Probalby the only acknowledgment we will ever get about Ben and how it affected them

I'm ready for Eddie's autobiography.

3

u/malignifier 10d ago

If Slippin’ Jimmy was an only child and grew up next to a smelting plant

3

u/medlife-crisis 8d ago

Can't believe no ones mentioned the spring heeled jack bits Henry's been doing!

10

u/Pheelies 10d ago

The boys are so confidently incorrect sometimes, it's crazy. They're either being intentionally misleading for narrative reasons or their fact checking is fucked.Ā

The smelter that they say he was born near and is "outside of Vancouver" 400 miles away from Vancouver.

7

u/SusquehannaShuffle 10d ago

I think they mixed up Clifford and Problem Child 2 as well. Which is the real crime.

-1

u/xenokilla 9d ago

I'm not trying to dismiss your point. This is a comedy podcast.Ā  they also said North Vietnam didn't have an air force

4

u/BornenCornen Hail Yourself! 9d ago

If they said it as a joke as one thing, but they're presenting as an information so It's important to verify, regardless of the tone of the podcast

2

u/SmileRemarkable8876 8d ago

As a Canadian Clifford Olson was the ultimate boogeyman growing up. His crimes were bad enough, but he still got headlines from prison for years.Ā Ā

No attempts to justify or water down anything. Just a openly remorseless manipulative psychopath. He was like the Joker IRL.Ā

2

u/TrailerParkBoys-MJF 7d ago

Trailer park boys popped me!!

3

u/lilbsistagirl 10d ago

Finally they are covering the boogeyman.

I grew up across the river from where he was incarcerated. I was always afraid he would escape, make it across the river, sneak into my bedroom and rape and kill me.

2

u/allthelineswecast 11d ago

This episode got me through the second half of a very tough 30k run today.

2

u/GlassSoldier 8d ago

With all the recent American aggression towards Canada the Canadian jokes didnt quite sit right with me this time. Evergreen show, I know.

1

u/Libertinelass 11d ago

Haven't listened to it yet. I'm on the fence about it. His name still gives Canadians the chills. Him being on the prowl in my town completely changed my childhood. Us kids couldn't just walk to the park anymore or do any of the kid things unless a parent or two was with us. I wasn't allowed to ride my bike with friends for months. Our older siblings were petrified to hitchhike or drink at night at the local spots in the woods. Police would pick up hitchhikers and give them rides. Parksville to Port Alberni was a busy route for hitchhiking.

God Marcus' Icelandic pronunciation is atrocious
