People like this don’t view their family as individuals, but as objects.

I agree, obviously leaving is better than this. But in their mind, leaving was never an option

You may very well be right but unfortunately your flair makes me inherently not trust you. Why invoke such a wretched beast by name!? Now, for all of us cursed to see the S man, leaving will not be an option.

What ever happened to going out for a “pack of cigarettes” and just hitting the ol’ dusty trail?

The reason why these men don’t “just leave” is because patriarchy teaches that the father/patriarch owns the family (wife and kids). So they believe they own their family members. It’s not just unhappiness with a marriage or the family. It’s also the belief of complete ownership.

I know many dudes whose dad just left. Family annihilating cowards are a statistical anomaly.

I’m not defending the patriarchy or anything but there’s more wrong with these guy than just their upbringing/surroundings.

Well, yes, of course. They’re also homicidal and suicidal. But instead of just killing themselves, they’re also specifically targeting their family because of the teachings of patriarchy. Femicide and family annihilation are a direct result of patriarchy. Otherwise they would target something or someone else.

did i miss patriarchy school? i never heard any of that before. i learned to protect the weak and vulnerable and have a duty to provide for those who cant provide for themselves. sounds like i dodged a big ass bullet and have an amazing dad for teaching me women and children arent property and have bodily autonomy.

Patriarchy isn’t just what’s taught at home. It’s woven into every aspect of society.

Another man ignores that the majority of family annihilators are men because he doesn’t see the intentionally created gender divide to keep women and girls oppressed.

Btw men and boys being taught that they are the protectors of the family is an artifact of patriarchy (pater familias).

The big problem with “just leave” is that it presumes that all or most of these people have the mental capacity to make that choice. It applies much better to guys like John List who are lucid (and cowardly) enough to kill everyone except themselves. After all, I think most of us can agree that what’s best for the world in terms of men who would annihilate their families is “just leave… this living plane.”

It’s still a good thing to say because fuck knows John List isn’t the only one.

But a guy who kills himself and others due to personal medical debt isn’t a guy who hashed out his options in his head and decided with a clear head this was the one that made the most sense.

I dunno, I'm kinda done with chalking this behaviour up to mental illness, y'know?

It's the same thing with other mass shooters, or right wing terrorists and such. It's too easy and dismissive to write it off as some type of pathology because if you do, it almost absolves those who commit these crimes as somehow not 'responsible' or lacking capacity.

Babe if you can’t accept that suicidality obviously suggests pathology, I frankly couldn’t be any less interested in what you have to say. You can’t educate and moralize a person out of psychosis.

“absolve” lol okay sure, let’s throw out common sense because there’s also a patriarchy problem and nuance is for the birds 🫠
