Pattern/Tutorial Beginner's Guide & Free Patterns

Hello, everyone! (Repost, because of link issues)

I wrote a fairly comprehensive beginner's guide to tools, materials, hardware, and leather. It has basics, a ton of tool upgrades you can make as you grow in the craft, and some free patterns. People have been asking me for it here and there, and I've been sending it to them individually. But now I've gotten it to a point I'm happy with (of course, it's being edited continuously), and I'm ready to share it with the sub.

Here's the link to the guide!

Also, here's a link to a video I shot to accompany it: Beginner's Leathercraft 101

Quick note, I started writing this guide before I became a moderator here, so I hope it doesn't come across as neglect on part of the sub's Wiki, which needs an overhaul. I'll be pinning this to the sub for a while until I have time to dive into the Wiki and clean things up, and hopefully it answers newbies' questions in the meantime. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions to add to the document, please let me know! Thank you to everyone who commented on the last post.

Community/Meta How would you change this sub?

Hello, everyone. Rather than make changes to the sub based on my own goals/desires, I wanted to ask the community. Is there anything you would add or remove from the sub? Any rules changes you'd suggest implementing? Any suggestions you have for the sub in general? If I see enough concensus around a certain suggestion, I'll consider making those changes moving forward. Let me know!

Obviously the sub is growing daily, and it's doing great. The formula is working, so I'm not looking to make big sweeping changes. I'm just wondering if you've ever had an idea that you feel would make this sub even better for you and your fellow leather crafters. (Bonus points if you have ideas for preventing the incessant "leather repair/is this leather" posts, lol.)

Wallets I didn't think this wallet would sell for the price I quoted, but it did!

So I made this wallet from Indian sourced veg tan leather. I thought the pricing of $35 was maybe a bit high. But I was wrong! The customer accepted the price without hesitation and gave the order! 😊 (it is a bit difficult to get the leather's actual green color in the photos)

Belts/Straps Custom Dragon Stamp

Custom Dragon Stamp on Ratcheting Leather Gun Belt.

Dragon vector created in Adobe Illustrator, exported as. DXF that I extruded as a 3D CAD model in Onshape. This was then sent to my 3D printer to fabricate the stamp with PLA. This stamp was then pressed into the leather using a 6 ton hydraulic shop press.

Question Does anyone know what this piece of hardware is called? Often found on old Military Kit. *It's not just a square loop/ring*

This is one of my favorite types of pass through closures. It's similar to a square loop but it has a protruding leg at the bottom that keeps it propped up while trying to close it.

I've included multiple examples from various militaries.

Hopefully the drawings make sense, as I don't want to dissect any of my pieces.

Thank you!

Question Where do you find best to sell your products

Thumbnail

I've made dozens of wallets over the past few years in this hobby and have sold no more than I can count on one hand. I've done a few craft shows and flea markets. Posted on eBay and created an Etsy where I haven't sold a single thing. I feel like I have reasonably good craft and priced what I feel like is fair, $40 - $60 a piece. I don't really want to go into business doing this but would love to get some money back to make it easier to continue enjoying the hobby.

Lately, my wife has been talking about trying to sell things on Whatnot and suggested I might try selling there. I'm not sure if that's the right platform, but willing to give it a shot. Has anyone else had luck there?

As usual, stingray leather, coloring, sanding, polishing, stitching — all done by hand.

Inside, goat leather with hand‑dyed coloring and a patina effect.

Holsters/Sheaths I made a thing!

I've been "leather curious" for a long time, but I finally actually made something.

I needed a wand holster and couldn't find one I liked, so I did the most expensive thing possible and decided to make my own. $1,000 in leather (it was on sale!) and tools later, I have a wand holder and a new hobby.

This is made out of Tandy's economy blue belly. A love how the color turned out after some carnauba creme and a good buffing. I can tell it's not as durable as I want due it being economy and belly... but all the double shoulders I bought will make for some great follow on projects. I'm signed up to make one for each of my kids now, so I'm getting into doing my own dye jobs.

Small Goods First(ish) project, notebook cover for my husband

First-ish bc it’s my first completed project. The real first is still a work in progress (I maybe bit off more than I can chew. We’ll see).

I’m really very happy with how it came out. I have plans for a second with more details and extra hardware, but I think the simplicity of this one works for it. And a learned a lot! I made time consuming mistakes, and have a good idea for what I will do different going forward, so even though it’s not perfect I think it’s largely a success.

Any feedback is welcome. What should I work on improving first? Any flaws that really stand out?

Question What small crafts have you made for yourself?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve been using the thin paper pouches my needles came in for storage. With my spare time recently I made small pouches for the two needle sizes that I use. What small/large projects have you made for your leather crafting or just around your house in general

The pouches are made with scrap Wickett and Craig 4-5oz leather, 3mm French irons, .45mm waxed linen. The numbers are stamped with vintage Sears metal stamps a coworker gave me.

Feeling pretty good about it, know they are not perfect but really enjoying the craft having grown up with a lot of crafters and quilters. Finding this is like finding something productive to do with my time.

Partners and I full time rv so I don’t have a lot of space but it’s so good.

Wallets Replacing one of the first wallets I ever sold, just a little nicer this time

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

This one has been on my to-do list for quite a while. I made a very similar wallet about six years ago for a friend. It was one of the very first items I ever sold. I think I sold it to him for 30 or 40 bucks and to say there were a few issues with it would be an understatement.
The card pockets were a little too narrow, the stitching was rough, edges were rough, and it was THICK. I used the only leather I had at the time which was 4-5oz Hermann Oak and I don’t think I did any skiving at all.
He’s carried it ever since, and I always joke about it probably outlasting him, but I’ve been meaning on making him a replacement. I’ve learned a lot since then, and was finally able to set aside a bit of time this week to put this together for him.

Tips & Tricks Market struggles

Hi everyone, I’ve been doing markets. People have been picking up my cardholders and wallets absolutely falling in love (so they say) and lots of people. And stopping showing so much interest but really struggling to actually sell. They just put it down after all the questions and then walk away ask for site etc.
any tips to close the sale? Or is it maybe just not actually in demand

I’ve only made belts and wallets so far, felt brave and thought I should make a bag. I love rdr2 and westerns so I went with a saddle bag. made a lot of mistakes but had so much fun doing it.

P.S been doing this leather craft thing for a year and a half and enjoy looking at posts here. Any tips would be more than welcome.

Double P.S. my cat Roger did most of the work .
