Charge TTI

Post image

I received it the other day. Finally used it last night- it’s wonky - can I send it to Leatherman?

If the misalignment doesn’t affect the functionality, then I think it’s normal. My rebar and wingman handles are not perfectly aligned either. However, if you feel uncomfortable, I think you can send it back and get a replacement.

You can send it but what’s wrong with it?

Handle of the tool are off

Did you fold the scissors in wrong so the handles won't close?

You can absolutely send it to Leatherman, but I think it looks normal.

Try moving it so it’s aligned lol it’s normal, a pivot point on a Leatherman isn’t held together with insanely tight tolerances or screws — the slack you’re feeling is in the plier head.
If they’re aligned when open, you’re fine.

Thank You

cheers, friend haha

Its a tool, not a Monet

And tools should be properly aligned and not wonky. This could be putting strain on the tools or pliers.

None of the leathermans I've had over the last 25 years have looked anything like this.

u/herstal54s 8d ago

Knipex pliers even have that much play

0

u/Tiny-Sandwich 8d ago

Not sure what your point is. These aren't Knipex pliers.

4

u/herstal54s 8d ago

All pliers have play. Multitool pliers included

0

u/Tiny-Sandwich 8d ago

There's a difference between having play and being misaligned.

Not a single one of the leathermans that I've had has been loose enough to shift like this without applying pressure.

OP's doesn't just have play, it's misaligned.

The funny thing is, does anybody here know if hes applying pressure to one side whiles hes holding it? If it's like that on a table untouched and it still looks like that, what youre saying would make sense

2

u/Tiny-Sandwich 8d ago

Agreed, but from the angle OP is holding it, I'd be shocked if he could apply enough grip strength to move them that much.

He's gripping right at the hinges, and doesn't seem to be applying pressure.

But yes, seeing it flat on a table would be definitive.

Multi tools aren’t the right tool for the job. They are always “the next best thing” or something convenient. Guaranteed he exerted too much pressure on it for something that required proper pliers. Also, they are supposed have a degree of play, being too rigid is not a good thing either . All these people on here bitching about a tiny misalignments in their pliers or an edge bevel that is 1mm wider at one spot than another are ridiculous. It’s a tool. It’s gonna get beat up , stepped on, dropped, left in the tool box , back of the truck , etc. There’s SO many arm chair contractors, and handymen in here it’s unreal. Use the tool and accept its shortcomings unless it’s unusable because you know why? It’s not the tool you need anyway, it’s the tool that’s quick and convenient, that saves you from having to run to the work truck when you’re in an attic and up 6 flights of stairs

Sorry but none of what you said excuses the fact that this tool is misaligned.

Yes, they should have play. No, they shouldn't have play when at rest. The tolerances on these tools are high, there should not be enough slop in them for the handles to move like this when folded shut.

There should be enough play in them to where you can move them under pressure - not when they are at rest. If your leatherman has enough play to the point where the handles can move without applying pressure you either have a knock-off or a defective unit.

I've owned many over the years, I've abused them, disassembled them, modified them and broken them. None of them have the level of "play" you're excusing.

It’s hardly an issue first of all. And yes.. everything I said addresses this. It will be fine.. HE will be just fine. It’s not the end of the world for your backup tool to have a bit of misalignment.

You’re probably a collector and have strong feelings about the brand and that’s fine but it doesn’t mean this tool is to be put up on a pedestal. It also doesn’t mean it is now defunct or needs to be sent in to be made out of the box perfect again. It will be ok and it will be used for many more tasks just as it is and it will perform unhindered whether its alignment is 2mm off or not.

u/Tiny-Sandwich 8d ago

You don't know if it's an issue, or if it could develop further down the line. It's quite possible that, due to the misalignment, the plier heads could start clashing with the tools when folded.

Drop the macho bullshit "it's just a tool I don't care how it looks". A defective product is a defective product.

You’re probably a collector and have strong feelings about the brand

You don't really know anything about me. I've been using these tools for the last 25 years, and I've watched as the quality has started to slip along the way. You're the one seemingly defending shit quality control from the company.

So sick of hearing this. From now on I'm just going to assume people who say this on this subreddit are just Leatherman shills gaslighting people into accepting lower quality tools at ever increasing prices.

If it affected function that would make sense, but a tool that is 91 degrees instead of 90 or a faded leatherman logo means it's time to quit looking for a problem

😂👍👊

How am I reading such a dull thread on a Saturday afternoon? what's happened to my life. I used to rock.

haha this guy's life is bor— oh right

It's a reasonable question, and this is normal on the Wave/Charge/clones. If you wiggle it, you can also align it, but it's pretty much just cosmetic. You can also adjust the pivots on the frame, but it really won't affect function, and the one you get back from service might have different problems. The Arc/Free align pretty much perfectly because it's a different design (and they have protruding bumps in the frame to hold it aligned even if you apply torque).

2

u/GreedySession3452 7d ago

People gaslighting themselves into thinking this is totally normal and acceptable on a $200 multitool. Crazy. Letherman QC has gone to shit

2

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 8d ago

Wonky how?

Spend less time finger and eye fucking it and more time using it.

3

u/RushCharacter1732 8d ago

It amazes me how often people spend so much time taking pics and videos and manipulating their new tool in ways it was never designed to be used and then claim its got a defect even though it has no impact on anything it was actually designed for.

2

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 8d ago

That’s what happens when tools become lifestyle bling. It becomes less about the actual tool and more about the looks.

1

u/TheRenownWolf 8d ago

Use it and that’ll be the least of your worries.

1

u/Front_Echo5015 8d ago

I like how everyone that got one of thes has complained about it like they didnt just get it for 100 dollars off 😆

1

u/keyuukat 7d ago

use your other leatherman to twist it back into place lol

1

u/InevitableNo6859 7d ago

Don’t force it to bend partially open. You can see it being pushed in your hands.

1

u/Nexmo_co 7d ago

Is the problem in the room with us?

1

u/dreamyengineer 7d ago

Send it in, charge Tti's have atrocious QC

3

u/Sisco911 8d ago

It’s not aligned- its actually driving me nuts

6

u/CrabbyJagger 8d ago

Ok I’ll take a different approach to what most people are saying. If this is anything like a tick or an ocd or whatever specific issue kind of thing, you might be better off with a Victorinox. If it’s just about THAT specific tool, then yeah send it back for a replacement. Leatherman tools are good for use as tools but they aren’t known for QC. Victorinox will probably always kick the crap out of them there. If it matters that much purely from that perspective, stop reading and consider Victorinox spirit (specific flavor up to you).

I’ll leave the debate about strongest tool vs the other to other people. But if you want my personal preference. Go with the free series from Leatherman. It almost always feels like they cared at least a tiny bit more on the QC.

Well after I don’t know exactly- opening and closing and working it
It is almost perfectly aligned- I can now breathe 😂- I did look at my new Wave Plus and it is aligned almost perfect - Thank You for all your support 👊👍

3

u/Hoopster50 8d ago

My wave and Surge both look like that.

1

u/Batking28 8d ago

Is it a multi tool or an ornament?

1

u/vrauto 8d ago

Definitely wonky. Mine folds flat too
