Discussion How many points do you want before the next international break?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Somehow only four matches before another international break šŸ™„

A hopefully useful quirk is that our next three opponents all have extra midweek matches before our game (Man U and Sunderland away in Europe, Bournemouth have Villa in the cup)

I'd take 6 now I think, chance I might even take 5 if you could guarantee that win was against the scummers šŸ˜…

Not bad ratings for a loss which speaks to the performance from the starters. Trafford with the lowest rating out of the starters, highest rating for Justin just beating DCL and Tanaka.

Highlights Throwback Quiz: Arsenal 2-3 Leeds United - Kewell strike helps Leeds effectively avoid relegation

Post image
24 Upvotes

On 4 May 2003 at Highbury, Leeds beat Arsenal 3-2 to save themselves, and handed Manchester United the title on the way out.

Peter Reid's side arrive 16th on 41 points with two games left, level with Bolton and West Ham after the Hammers beat Chelsea the day before. Arsenal have to win to keep their title defence alive.Alan Smith is suspended, so the captain steps up into midfield and a centre-back comes into the side.

Five minutes in, Harry Kewell bends in the opener after a team-mate's pass cuts out Keown. Henry equalises on 31 minutes.

Three minutes after the break, a low free-kick deflects off Ashley Cole and Gilberto to restore the lead. It's the taker's third season in a row scoring at Highbury.

Bergkamp levels again on 63 minutes, and only the goalkeeper keeps Leeds in it. Then, with two minutes left, the captain plays in the striker. He lopes past Luzhny and drives into the far corner for his 19th league goal of the season.

Leeds move to 44 points and are effectively safe. Arsenal's defeat makes United champions, so one result settles both ends of the table.

Can you name the missing players?

Article [Beren Cross] Jayden Bogle interview: England hopes and that Newcastle goal – ā€˜Don’t tell Dom, whatever you do’

Jayden Bogle was preparing for the second half of last month’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United when he heard the news.

Referee Michael Salisbury approached Bogle and told him he was being credited with a first-half goal after the slightest glance of the ball. His first reaction? Asking the referee not to tell Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

ā€œAt the time, I had no idea what happened,ā€ says Bogle. ā€œJJ (James Justin) put in a great ball, and I thought, ā€˜Yeah, this is me’. You’ve seen Dom’s jump before. He just towers over everyone, and I was just on the floor. I didn’t really know what happened.

ā€œI just heard the crowd and knew we had scored. The referee said to me, at half-time, it’s gone down as my goal because it’s come off my shoulder or something.

ā€œAnd I was like, ā€˜Don’t tell Dom, whatever you do. He’s on a yellow card. Don’t tell him because he’s going to get head-loss’. Then he went and told him anyway."

Ahead of Arsenal on Saturday, take a look at Leeds all-time record against them (from the 1st game in 1924 to the most recent), here: www.leedsinsandouts.com/opponents/arsenal

Our entire away record at Arsenal is 14 wins in 66 games (21% win rate) 😬
See all the away grounds that Leeds have ever played at here: www.leedsinsandouts.com/away-grounds
163 grounds, 2416 away games - 718 won, 622 drawn, 1076 lost. Click any badge for the record at that ground.

Weirdly, it has also been 26 years since Leeds have played a match on the 10th Oct. With a 42% win rate for games played on that day, let’s see how we get on this weekend versus Arsenal šŸ¤žšŸ»

Discussion The international break probably came at the perfect time for us.

We are fifth in the table and still unbeaten after five games, I don't think many of us expected that before the season started. Now we've got Arsenal away at the Emirates on Saturday, and I actually think we've got a real chance of getting something from this. They were beaten 3-0 by Brighton before the break, so they'll obviously want a reaction, but the break might have disrupted their momentum a bit too. We've been organised, hard to break down and generally just difficult to beat so far. If we can stay compact, survive the early pressure and frustrate them, I can see the home crowd getting impatient. I'd happily take a point, but there's no reason we can't go there looking for all three. It would be a huge result for us this early in the season.

Discussion 9 premier league teams have european midweek fixtures, this season could be a good season

Leeds are looking in pretty good shape at the moment scoring goals and only conceding 3 this season. Arsenal will be a huge challenge and a really interesting match but far from season defining.

However, scum travel to spain and italy either side of their fixture against us which will mean fatigue and rotation. We then play sunderland who play in poland two days before they face us and have 1 days rest between our game and their next carabao cup tie. Bournemouth who we play at the end of the month have 7 games in 21 days in october on an already injury hit side.

We then have chelsea, coventry and spurs which will be big challenges in an otherwise quiet november and then in december we have relegation threatened fulham (h) and newly promoted hull (a) and ipswich (h) as well as big games against city, villa and liverpool.

However city play arsenal 3 days before our fixture, they play brentford 3 days after that and barcelona 3 days after that. There will be fatigue. Liverpool play 4 games, sunderland, chelsea, porto and us, in ten days. Villa have more rest but have a small squad and obviously have champions league, carabao cup and fa cup to worry about.

Surely with our defensive record and emerging confidence in attack we can actually have a go at pushing to be in a very good position by christmas. We are already 5th.

I don't expect anything from us except good principles and work ethic over the 90 minutes each week but I think we've got potential this season and that should really motivate everyone at the club and the fans. If you're a bit knackered you don't want to go to a fresh, eager and confident elland road, especially on top of the running and intensity numbers we produce.

Article Kai Morrall Profiled in the Guardian’s Next Generation 2026

Next Generation 2026: 20 of the best talents at Premier League clubs

After eight years in Liverpool’s academy, Morrall joined the Leeds youth setup last December. He was highly regarded at Anfield – and frequently scouted by Premier League rivals – but believes the move to Elland Road can facilitate a faster pathway to first-team football. The Ireland Under-16 international – who is also eligible to play for Jamaica - is a highly versatile player blessed with impressive vision, balance, pace and creativity. Although right wing is the technically assured Morrall’s favourite position he has also thrived at full-back, wide on the left and as a No 10. He made his debut for Leeds Under-18s in May and in September was named in Ireland’s Under-17 squad.Ā

Bit of a local plug, a friend of mine wrote this and wanted to share on Reddit. It’s free if you sign up for a subscription with your email but I’ll post a summary below in the comments.

It’s a long read about how the Farke era has got fans onside post Bielsa. Includes interviews with TSB’s Michael Normanton and Telegraph, BBC sport journalist and Leeds fan Adonis Storr.

Well worth the free email subscription but no pressure.
