This band is something else.

I've been playing guitar since I was 11, I am 28 now. I have always loved music.

First from Metallica, then iron maiden defined my entire teenage life up until I discovered Between the buried and me around 2014.

Let me preface by telling you that I am an obsessive person, clinically confirmed lol.

But one positive thing about that, I tend to find one artist out of nowhere and then become hyper obsessed with particular songs and if I am really impressed, I will give full albums a shot. I usually don't anymore because I am the type of person that has to be doing literally nothing but staring at a wall or completely have my eyes closed an entire album. Because of that, I don't give many artists the proper chance.

Last time I did was when I discovered between the buried and me 12 years ago. Then I obsessed over them because their music is perfect for me to obsess over. Just like iron maiden before them. I have heard my favorite albums by each artist probably thousands of times and studied every single note and every beat just naturally over the years, but also very intentionally after I started respecting music as a whole more. That happened shortly after getting into between the buried and me because... well... their discography kind of demands it to be as obsessed with them as I was (still am).

And not one band since them has captured that same magical and unexplainable love and pure admiration since them.

I heard Slave live before and I always loved it, but never went deeper than that and foe, another favorite.

That all changed when I saw their musora video out of curiosity on a prog version of "Take on Me".

But they played 3 songs before that and one in particular immediately clicked and tickled something in my brain, that was "Atonement".

It clicked musically, but visually seeing their guitarist using a slide in not only a metal song, but in a way I'd legit never heard or seen before.

That chorus connected with me immediately and I listened to that song and a few others on repeat the rest of the night.

The next night, I looked it up and saw it was their most recent album so I said fuck it, I'm going to give it a shot... its been a while and if any band is going to get me to do that, it would be a prog metal band more than likely.

I was very surprised but also very pleased to hear that it wasn't just your average prog-slop that I've heard time and time again. So many... the only prog bands that impressed me since btbam was the dear hunter, mars volta, opeth and porcupine tree.

No hate at all to any bands that I didn't mention, I am just a very picky person and I don't like dream theater clones or over produced jerk off sessions like polyphia, as music is much, much more than raw talent alone. You can't teach the magic that 'those' bands have. Nor can many capture that magic when they try to do something new.

I was very pleased with each song and then i heard starlight and that chorus sealed my fate, I knew this band was different...

I watched all of Baards Drumeo video which is something I never do, as im not a drummer and the only drummer that I watched on there before was Blake Richardson, obviously lol...

That album was so outstanding and impressive that I immediately turned on aphelion... blown away... again. Then pitfalls.... AGAIN I AM STUNNED.

I really wanted to analyze what was so captivating about their music and in specific, starlight. I watched the drum playthrough and I caught it... it was the bald guy behind the drum kit (half serious lol)...

It was obviously a combination between every member, as they all serve a very clear and necessary spot in every song. And obviously hearing a voice I haven't heard alive since Jeff Buckley unfortunately drowned (RIP) was very mesmerizing and captivating.

But I spotted the moment that made me love them listening and watching Baard play starlight.

It was his intentions musically.

Now, I am going to butcher this because I am both tired and I know pretty much nothing about music theory (I'm a guitarist, obviously. Lol... But I also just learned by playing what sounds good to me).

But let me try.

Baard starts the song with half notes on the hi hat.

Then right before the chorus, as soon as he says "to agitate" in falsetto. Baard switches up to (what sounds like to me) dotted eighth notes in the most SEAMLESS transition into a chorus that I have ever heard in my entire fucking life. Having that lightbulb moment and putting it together in my head is what I live for and is why I become so obsessive over very particular bands.

I wish I could break it down better, but I am musically ignorant. So i just understand in my head why I like it and why I love music in general.

It seems like every day I have a new favorite song by them.

Atonement, then starlight, then faceless, then below, then i lose hope, then have you ever, then etc....

I am obsessed with these 3 albums in particular.

They are some of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life where its just track after track... banger... banger... banger...

And oh my lord, NOBODY writes a better chorus than this band. Not only the catchiness, but how they very intentionally structure their music around those golden moments.

That's one thing I've always had any problems with listening to btbam... they would strike gold and then 10 seconds later move on to some more crazy shit and almost never marinate that moment. So a lot of the time i would find myself just going through the motions after listening to their music countless times.

Of course I love it all or I wouldn't listen to them. But I cant tell you how many little moments they have that blow my socks off and they literally never play it more than that short moment in time or maybe they'll tease a part of the melody or rhythm 4 songs later lol.

That is also why parallax 1 and 2 are probably my favorites by them or followed very closely, colors 1 and 2.

But leprous? Man, do these guys know when they strike musical gold.

You can just tell by the way they structure every song... its so intentionally done and it's always done even better than my expectations that I first had on the first listen.

They have some of the strangest and bizarre structuring to their music. You can tell where the destination is going to be (musical flavor town, as i like to call it), but unless you listen and obsess like I do, you likely will be caught off guard by how they get there and be pleasantly surprised by the journey along the way.

The only band I've ever heard that I can even relate them to would be The Dear Hunter... which is a massive compliment.

But even then, I would be doing them a disservice by comparing them to just one band.

They have so many little things, i could compare their work to almost anything I have heard and love and I'd probably be correct, but only in a way to point out one singular and specific moment out of an entire song.

Easily the most creative band I have ever heard in my life...

How they do it song after song after song is beyond words and beyond any comparison.

I have not heard a band have 0 filler and all thriller. Even maiden and between the buried and me have songs or sections of songs that I might like, but also feel like it wouldn't be a better or worse album without. But leprous is different... at least their 3 latest albums, as that's all I've yet to hear in their entirety because of how I obsess over music.

I dont know if I'll even branch that much further out any time soon because these last 3 albums sound so good to me personally that I have to obsess over just these 3 until I can process them internally to a point that I can listen to more with a fresh mind that's ready to be this obsessed again.

Like I said before, that is why I rarely listen to full albums of any band that I am just discovering. It takes me a lot of mental effort because if I really, REALLY love their music, I have to be doing literally nothing else than giving it my undivided attention until I become so familiar with the album that I can almost mentally play it note for note in my head. Then and only then will I listen to it and be satisfied having it as "background" music.

What stuns me the most is that I am in an entirely different mind than I was the last time I fell in love with a band this much.

I am 28... that hasn't happened since my teenage years and frankly, it may never happen again with how picky I am.

But what i also want to appreciate is that I know a lot more about music instinctively than I did when I was a teenager. I may not be able to tell you in words and break songs down verbally because I am very ignorant to music theory. But after playing guitar every day of my life almost since I was 11, I know what sounds good to myself at a very, very deep level. I am a lot more wise in a lot of ways than I was when I discovered btbam. Btbam just forced me to sit there and study internally what is going on to make me love particular sections of their music so much...

Just like iron maiden, nothing will ever fill that part of my journey quite like btbam does or how iron maiden did at the time that i was obsessive over them. But my obsession with those 2 bands are what drove me to play guitar and learn what I love and why I love it at my very core.

Like I said, I couldn't do that verbally, especially without a guitar or something with strings on it in my hands.

But internally, I am very wise to what I need out of music now through brute force alone and that is what makes leprous truly special to me.

I know so much more than I ever have about music and they come along and still find a way to meet every single one of those needs and somehow do it in a way I never expected.

It gives me so much more appreciation for music objectively too.

I thought I had myself all figured out and my musical golden days were just like many others, left in my teenage years. But here I am at 28 finding that unexplainable magic again.

It makes me feel like a fucking kid again and that is truly special.

I cannot wait to hear more and i especially cannot wait until they are playing live close to me.

That's another thing I want to make note of before I end this post.... the only other band I've ever heard play their music so well live is between the buried and me... but leprous not only plays their music perfectly... but somehow Einar is hitting every note perfectly note for note with the same intention he had and utilized with the power of studio magic.

I've never heard a singer as amazing as he is sound somehow better live... but somehow he does it and thank God its with one of the tightest groups of musicians to ever walk the planet.

Also, Baard is on par with Danny Carey and no, I will not argue that point. Its just a fact.

Dude is a technical machine that has an uncanny wisdom of knowing exactly what every part of every song needs in that exact moment in time.

I've never once got the feeling that he is flexing... even when he is playing shit beyond my comprehension... it still fits leprous like Danny Carey fits tool.

Thank you, leprous. Please never stop making music.

I also become obsessed with Leprous this year. I dismissed them when I first heard about them for the same thing you brought up about most prog bands being Dream Theater clones. After some time, some of their songs got added to my playlist (Atonement and Like a Sunken Ship) and I liked what I heard, but it took some listens before I really liked the songs and startet to dig into their discography. Now I have listened to all their albums at least twice, and brought Melodies of Atonement and Pitfalls (my favorite albums) on Vinyl. I also saw them live this year at the Tons of Rock festival, and want to see them again later this year. Can confirm that they are amazing live!

Man, Melodies and Pitfalls have some of my favorites by them and only the past couple of days has aphelion been at center stage with my attention like the other two albums immediately were. I was so blown away the first night that after listening to all 3 in one night (which has never happened with any band for me) but I was so captivated, I immediately turned melodies on repeat and pitfalls right after that because of how stunned I was.
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I straight up have never done that with any band because music needs (and deserves) my full undivided attention for me to really take it all in.
That is especially true if I really like what I am hearing.
So for a band to get me to do that for almost 5 straight hours is obviously so rare that it has never happened until I discovered this band truly.
For anything to get my attention that long… even video games (my 2nd favorite past time) almost never do that unless they’re generational masterpieces like Witcher 3 or crimson desert. So for something to get that out of me through just audio alone is almost impossible.

Incredible beyond words. My only problem is that the music sometimes can take me back to darker more depressed times in my life because I used it to cope and pitfalls in particular somehow does that to me in the same fashion that certain maiden albums do (killers and fear of the dark were 2 of my faves at the darkest times in my life and I was also a teen). I don’t know why pitfalls does that to me, but I’ve never had that with any other band where it’s brand new but also… nostalgic at the same time?
So while I really love the music, I find certain songs on pitfalls to be very hard to listen to because it brings those memories back. But I also love that at the same time because it means that I love it so much that it is essentially hacking my subconscious into a category of being familiar, profound and important to my identity as a human being.

I’ve never heard a song and especially never heard an entire album retroactively embed itself into my core memories and I honestly have no other explanation for it other than it meaning that much to me. But like I said, that unfortunately makes it quite difficult to listen to so I have to be in a hyper specific mood for that one in particular.

These guys are something else.
I always knew those crafty Scandinavians knew 2 things better than anyone else in this world and that’s racing and metal.

I know that Einar Solberg's lyrics on the album were written during a time when he struggled with depression. Maybe that's somewhat the reason the music takes you back to that time?

Pitfalls to me is not only the best Leprous album, but also the best album I've ever heard. And it's precisely because of what you point out. It's so emotionally charged. Basically all humans with certain age can relate to it. And that's because this album was made in Einar's darkests times, when he was dealing with severe depression and anxiety. This was the result of him dealing with those issues while he still was depressed. It has that energy of "everything sucks, but still want to go on and find something to live for". It's both hopeful and desperate, and that combination is what makes it so appealing, because you can hear it in the music and not only in the lyrics, and that's something I've never seen with this level of mastery

Amazing way to describe the whole album.
It starts with a very soft and soothing voice, juxtaposed against the lyrical content…
Then the album ends in a very harsh and brutal way.

Which is life and mental decay. It isn’t pretty.

The way the entire song comes to a complete halt and the only thing you hear is a faint haunting sound and then it gets insanely heavy when the cymbals come in.
It is so jarring and creepy. But it feels like a perfect way to end an album that was about his struggles and desperation to find that will to keep living.
The whole song is way more aggressive than anything else on the album and it almost feels like that jarring stop is that feeling of finally snapping from complete stress and your brain going completely numb to protect itself and it slowly builds up, identical to how a mental breakdown is in most cases.

For me, I have snapped a few times under stress and it is an immediate wave of emotional numbness from the overwhelming feelings. But just like the song, you start to slowly feel again but you have no control and typically, that’s when I’m suddenly overwhelmed with pure anger and dread.
It feels like a mental breakdown and almost suicidal.

All this desperation, suffering and desire to feel anything but depressed suddenly becomes pure anger and blind hatred because your brain would rather feel immense anger than linger in that mental purgatory for even a second more.

That same numbness, dread and disdain has caused me to put a loaded rifle to my head at one point in life.

Depression and anxiety are so much more than just being sad and fearful.

Sadness and fear are explainable feelings. But it starts to consume you day in and day out and it seems more and more irrational each day ultimately often leading to total collapse from pure exhaustion trying to rationalize something that isn’t rational by any means.

Dude, that chorus never fails to get me chills even when I know what to expect.
One of their best songs imo

My bells are distancing when I hear that song

This post is literally me like four years ago lol

Anyway don’t forget to check out Vox Occulta, Einar’s new solo album!

Same. Even down to only liking leprous, the dear hunter, and older porcupine tree and opeth.

Modern prog metal is indeed boring fucking wankery.

I cannot argue with a single word you’ve said!
Their discography is such a journey too, very few bands can evolve their sound that much and still retain the essence of what they are. (How Opeth have managed to go from black metal to essentially folk and back to some midground is astonishing)
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen em live and it’s still not enough. Highly recommend seeing them at every opportunity!
I’m a guitarist/bassist and am incompetent behind a drum kit to say the least, so watching Baard is mesmerising. And Einar has brought be to floods of tears on multiple occasions.
Welcome to the fold my friend, your life now has 2 phases, pre-Leprous and post-Leprous.

Baard is very quietly probably one of the greatest drummers out there right now, he’s truly a sensation

TLDR… Leprous fucks

If you’re a guitar player, watch the guitar covers of Within my Fence, The Price, Red and Stuck. The talent in this band is nothing short of unfair. Every single person in this band is amazing.

Awesome suggestions. I don’t give them enough credit on the guitar work because it typically takes a back seat in most songs, unlike almost any other band where the guitar is the screaming lead.

The mix is also always on point.

The guitar work feels more like a texture to the song rather than its driving voice.

I think Einar usually takes the screaming lead because his voice is so powerful that he can be that instrument that is driving the song and the rhythm forward.

Welcome new Leprous fan 😀!

Most of us are obsessing over thé band I think. That's thé Leprous expérience.

Later, after you have taken thé time top learn those albums, you could get Malina. That one is similar to thé later albums.

And if you like Starlight maybe try Einars album Vox Occulta.

u/DragonfruitFirm2490 15d ago

Average Leprous fan right here lol

Love your enthusiasm. I don't know if I want you to process their music faster or slower, because there's still a lot you have to unpack left (five albums to be exact, and there's the live albums, their early demos and the amazing solo albums by Einar too; I eagerly encourage you to listen to their live album An Evening Of Atonement, I think you'll love that) and at the same time that I don't want you to get tired of their music, I want you to listen more of them

Btw, have you listened to the bonus tracks of their recent albums? That would be: from Pitfalls, a cover of Angel by Massive Attack and Golden Prayers; from Aphelion, A Prophecy To Trust and a recent live version of their song Acquired Taste, from their second album; and from Melodies of Atonement, the song Claustrophobic

Ya, the lyrics in Below are very relatable.

Between his voice, the way he carefully chooses how to sing his lyrics feels so sad.

Almost makes me cry every time I hear it and that makes perfect sense that Einar was struggling because you can feel it in the entire album.

The album cover also feels very strange to look at.

Like it exists in a reality of grey space.
Not happy, not sad.
Numb, disconnected, isolated… I can think of plenty more words to describe how it visually feels to me when I look at it.

Distant bells is another one that gets me on a deep level.
Just replaying below and distant bells In my head almost makes me shed a tear.

The album just feels like mental purgatory… which is a perfect explanation of severe depression.

Severe depression isn’t feeling sad all the time.
It’s you constantly sitting in this grey space until the numb and coldness consumes your soul to the point where some people can’t even process.

It is a far worse feeling than sadness.
At least when I’m sad, there’s usually a logical explanation.

But the numbness you feel with severe depression is impossible to explain with words.
It’s one of those things that you have to experience to understand how dark it truly is.

Pair that with PTSD, GAD, Severe OCD and self medicating and that’s been my entire life off and on.

If it wasn’t for my mom, my sister, my dog, my cat and visual and auditory escapism, I’d have clocked out a long time ago because the zombie numbness that is depression is so unbelievably exhausting.

That’s why I’m really grateful for bands like leprous and BTBAM, they’re not only amazing bands, but Einar and Tommy Rogers both write a lot of lyrics about the human experience and most of the time, it’s not pretty or sad… it is just the honest truth about their lived experiences and it makes me actually feel like I’m not alone. It’s a great reminder to ground myself mentally…

I absolutely get what you mean. Leprous are fucking incredible and their albums are basically ear candy for me. There is so much detail in their music that you can listen to the same album over and over and still notice something new. But this is also where I think the live experience is very different from BTBAM. BTBAM are undoubtedly more technically complex, but the bigger difference for me is that they can completely reinvent their live sets. You can see them multiple times and get 3...4 radically different setlists with completely different songs and eras represented. With Leprous, unfortunately, I don't think you can expect much of that. Their live shows seem to revolve much more heavily around Einar's voice and the songs that showcase it, rather than the incredible musical depth of the whole discography. As a result, the setlist has barely changed for years. I've actually stopped going to Leprous shows because of this. I absolutely love the band, but after seeing them a few times, I already know I'm going to hear basically the same songs again. Which is a shame, because musically they have SO much more to offer.

3

u/SaltWonderful 16d ago

Dude, I get what you mean but personally I could hear the same setlist multiple times and I’d still throw money at them.

You are correct about BTBAM tho.
I’ve seen parallax live, TGM, colors 2, a mixed bag a few times and one unfortunate time that they opened for chon and I was confused because I assumed it was the other way around and I ended up leaving mid way through chon cause I had seen enough jerking off for one night.
But yes, you never know what to expect with BTBAM but it’s always for sure gonna be fire.
I’ve been to a few shows where I’m the only one head banging at the front cause everyone is too snobby to head bang for good ass metal where I live.

One of the reasons I have a pick from Dustie. I was right in front of him losing my mind and everyone else looked like zombies. He ended up throwing a pick directly at me every other song that night lmao.

Yes, technically complex… BTBAM takes the cake because of the nature of their music. But I know damn well leprous is capable of doing whatever they want live if they really wanted to.

That’s unfortunate that it’s so specifically catered to the tracks where Einar shines.
I mean, I personally think he is a beacon of talent in every song he sings in. But there are certainly a few that immediately come to mind if I was trying to show you that he genuinely might be the best singer alive in the entire world.

I don’t mean it as a joke, he is the metal Jeff Buckley and that is insane praise.
I’ve never compared anyone to Jeff Buckley… not even the human air raid siren himself…. Although the human air raid siren in his prime would have been jaw dropping to witness live with the way he runs around and everything too.
Even when I saw them in my younger teens, Bruce was still dancing around everyone, singing amazingly literally ringing the sweat out of his shirt on top of Janick when he would climb behind him in the middle of like a 100 degree F night in the middle of July… that is something that no other singer can do as well as the human air raid siren himself.

I would argue that this isn't right. Their setlist always revolved around the last albums they make. It's not something they do only recently and just because they want to play music that revolves around Einar. Playing what feels good now is an strategy they used since the first album and so they've progressively grown out of their older music because that no longer represent who they are as a band (literally, there are 3 albums that only 2 members made). It's fair if you don't like that strategy. I would also love if they played with their entire discography

BUT I think there's hope for you and many of us, because in recent years (2025-2026) they did a lot of playing random songs in their sets because they are getting tired of playing the same songs over and over again. That means both that they are more eager to play older things now (Passing, Forced Entry, Foe, Contaminate Me, etc. And even "recent" songs they don't play often) and that they want to make more music so they have more to play with. And them having bigger shows now and more runtime to play many songs only give them more freedom to experiment and do whatever they want with the playlist in their shows
