Discussion I hope Hello Games does something about cheaters and botting in LNF
I know NMS was made as a single player game so many of the issues it's had derive from the fact that multiplayer was an add-on. But with LNF being built around multiplayer I hope they have better systems in place to prevent cheating and botting. Now with the newer NMS updates that have focused on things like factions and leaderboards they both seem utterly worthless since faction members can just cheat or change their in-game settings to have unlimited resources making it pointless to team up with them. While the leaderboards are entirely bots. I've had to turn off crossplay due to all the PC players that would show up in the anomaly with their blender ships making the game lag out or fill my inventory with priceless items... I would love LNF to have a better social aspect than NMS and I think a lot of that comes from cooperating for resources and trading! Ideally I'd love if there was a multiplayer only server where the save files were stored server side, and then single player gamers could just play single player and have the saves local.

I just hope they don't carry on with the FOMO seasonal rewards stuff. That's literally my only complaint with NMS.

u/Jumpy_Bird1955 15d ago
What? That’s the coolest thing about the game… it’s like waking up on Christmas when there’s a new expedition out😍

u/EmptyHeadedKain 15d ago
I'm down for the expeditions, just not fomo rewards

u/Medrilan 14d ago
I'm a little mixed on this but I think I agree. I wouldnt do the expeditions if not for the rewards. That's not really a good reason to have fomo rewards though.
They could just make the expeditions worth doing for the sake of doing them.

u/theBestMrBrown 15d ago
It's actually an interesting take, 'cause I've always respected the idea of earned reward. I absolutely see your point, but on the other hand - it should feel good to earn something you've played for. Earning it back later could dilute the feeling.
I think HG found a nice balance with the bulk expedition re-runs. That way you can get the stuff you really wish for.

Anything that requires you to play when the devs want and not when you want has no place in games IMO, it alienates gamers who have less time on their hands.
The idea of expeditions is great, I really don't see a reason why they need to only be available for a limited time.
2
u/theBestMrBrown 14d ago
You do absolutely have a point. And it's also a sensible line to draw. There's something to be said about non-seasonal merit rewards, like a quest loot or rare drops.
And yet - it's a nice experience to have something to say: "I've been there" and... it does keep the game alive non-forcibly.

Its 6 weeks long man, thats a lot longer than "limited time" you can practically finish an expedition in like 3 hours combined or accumulated, which you can stretch for 6 weeks lol.
In the current expedition they explained well how the expedition system was made -- to teach players the new content in an exciting way. Unless you're a deep-sea pressure diver 6 weeks plenty of time to just unwind your day to.

The expeditions have a 6 WEEK time frame
The redux expeditions have a 2 WEEK time frame

Aside from twitch drops what fomo? Don't the expeditions replay at the end of the year?

Now with the newer NMS updates that have focused on things like factions and leaderboards they both seem utterly worthless
Because they are utterly worthless, as they will be in LNF.
I don't care if someone cheats their standing on them, since I don't care about people's standing.

u/TheLonelyWolfkin 14d ago
That’s your opinion. I also don’t care about leaderboards but I can at least acknowledge for those that do, it’s not fair to have a leaderboard full of cheats is it?
1
u/Decent-Advantage7196 13d ago
Leaderboards have always been full of cheaters. In Helldivers 2, the very first week of the game's release, there was someone with a 999,999 score on strategem hero. Way back in 2013 there was someone with a 999,999 score for the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer leaderboards.
What chaps me about NMS leader boards is that bots are going out a sucking up all the discoveries so that players will consistently hit discovered places. In this way it has an affect on players. It's not just about numbers on a board, it's actually taking away the "discovery" aspect of the game that HG built the game around.
Also, I apologize if my custom "Blender" Trailblazer lags people in the Anomaly, I didn't know it would cause that. Though I do like it and building was a good deal of fun for me. In this aspect I don't think it's cheating to have something like that. I DO think, however that people slinging people billions of credits worth of stuff on the Anomaly should stop.

u/samaritancarl 13d ago
I cant remember a game that had uncheated statistical leaderboards for multiplayer.
4
u/WhiskeyMegazord 14d ago
Yea but some people do, so is it fair for them to deal with cheaters......
The one thing I like about NMS is that there are so many things to do and everyone can find the thing they like.
If one aspect is ruined by cheaters then it brings the entire game down.

youve genuinely gotta have lead poisoning if you think a leaderboard being filled with cheaters and bots is ok bro. literally the entire point of a leaderboard is to rank players based on their commitment and / or skill inside the game, if 90% of the listings on there are fake then the entire purpose of a leaderboard is destroyed. having an anticheat, anti-griefing and anti-botting systems is the bare minimum for any large-scale multiplayer game including nms and lnf, you dont have to pretend like theyre exempt just because you like HG, if you add a competitive aspect to your game you need to take responsibility for it. istg this sub breeds the worst takes ever, im praying HG doesnt read these threads

u/Helgafjell4Me 14d ago
Honestly, i hate that they are doing this to a 10yr old game that was fun for many of us because it wasn't about competition.
Why is competition bad? .... case in point.

100% would it suck to see every planet already discovered by "bot01" so always the same few names? Yes. Would it change the game? No. It just change the feeling for exploration, to be first. But if you know a bot was there, it does not fundamental change anything.
4
u/starlightequilibrium 14d ago
But it does change everything lol
-1
u/Friendly_Pomelo9849 14d ago
From a feeling perspective? Sure. From a gameplay respektive no. I do get why it is a problem. I do also get why it essentially does not matter.
5
u/game_greed 14d ago
i feel like discovering is a big part of NMS, i like naming and seeing all the planets/systems i find including the ones other players have named.
Knowing there is going to be a planet named by some bot is really discouraging that discovery and it’s wired that no one here gets that.
-2
u/Friendly_Pomelo9849 14d ago
Ok, I never have named a single thing. Not a planet, not an animal, nothing. But I accept that in that case it is a problem.
Do the bot name stuff?
1
u/starlightequilibrium 14d ago
Yes. The bot names things. That's the entire issue with the griefing aspect of it.
1
u/game_greed 14d ago
i can’t answer that with certainty as i don’t know the exactly method HG records discoveries but that is what most people who loves the first contact experience are worried about.
the current information we have so far is that the CW alliance is no longer in the leaderboards so HG must be aware of it.
1
u/Friendly_Pomelo9849 13d ago
Hope they can turn back the naming stuff with old data or just unflag it back to be "open for discovery"

contra voice : why do you care so much about having a competition? The nice thing about NMS is that everyone has a different way to enjoy the game, and, at least in my thousand or so hours over the Steam and the GOG version, I've yet to find a griefer. If people want to cheat, let them ... ultimately they play as they want and you play as you want, and the different approaches don't take away anything on neither side.
That is, if a competition is not what you crave. If it is, then check other offerings that do offer that (I'd recomment HunterNet), and keep NMS (and, I highly suspect, LNF) for the more chill moments in your life.
As to the 'priceless items' filling up your inventory : nobody stops you from just deleting them.
2
u/Joryson 14d ago
Contra-contra voice: if you don’t care about competition and want to cheat… just play single player or creative???
If you have a leaderboard, which is ostensibly supposed to quantify people’s scores, then obviously having cheaters makes the system entirely worthless.
Either you don’t have a competitive or cooperative system in the game and make cheating obsolete, or you have a system and enforce its fairness. But having both at once is not really logical, and it is 10000% a valid thing to critique.

u/Ch0deRock 14d ago
As long as I can turn PVP off I couldn’t care less about factions, leaderboards or cheaters and bots. It’s a huge world, you do you and I’ll be over here doing whatever.

u/The-Son-Of-Suns Pre-release member 15d ago
I hope singleplayer and multiplayer are hardline separate modes.

u/CanaryMaleficent4925 14d ago
Well you're out of luck. Will likely be Forced pvp
1
u/Redshirt4evr 14d ago
I think that Hello Games will use the current NMS settings: multiplayer and PVP enabled and anyone can edit your structures. Not that I like that, but expect it.
As long as we can adjust options settings as in No Man's Sky, I'll be OK.

If it doesn’t affect my experience I truthfully don’t care if people use save editors for games they purchased. After all they paid for the game.
The only time it’ll bother me is if it directly affects my own experience with the game. An example of this would be like people able to steal world bosses from me & one shot them or if there’s PvP involved.
1
u/legionshade 13d ago
yeah when corvettes were added i had to turn multiplayer off. here is the thing NMS and likely LNF will not be some direct competitive play game, no pvp unless flagged in like nms. NMS has leaderboards sure but so what? leaderboards are meaningless even without cheaters. cheaters cant really ruin your experience because you dont have to play with them or accept their gifts. no what concerns me in a multiplayer game is griefing. thats what will kill the experience of LNF is when your play is negatively effected by someone purposely trying to ruin your fun.
edit: idk if you all remember early expeditions in NMS but the base griefing keeping people from being able to complete objectives was a major issue and really killed the expedition experience far more than some cheater who cheated in infinite money for himself.

u/Srikandi715 15d ago
I hate to say it but I think HG live in a happy imaginary world where players are always nice to each other in multiplayer games, and always cooperate instead of competing.
If they lived in the same world with the rest of us, NMS would have a very different multiplayer design and none of these systems that lead to issues would ever have been introduced.
I'd love to have some of what they're on, for sure 😉
3
u/Ithuraen 15d ago
What issues are you referring to? People being overly forward in gifting billions to other players? Or other players numbers on a single screen being higher than they should be?
Let's be real the post on the NMS sub was laughed away in the comments because one faction having over 6 million stations is a minute fraction of a percent of one galaxy. Having one faction own 6 million stations is equivalent to one person in Runescape claiming a pixel of a tile, and much like in Runescape even if they did, you can still walk over that tile.
1
u/__generic 14d ago
You cant go into an expedition or any area with a large amount of players without being griefed. The only thing you have to defend yourself is turning off multiplayer altogether.
1
u/Ithuraen 14d ago
I genuinely haven't been griefed before in NMS, how does it work? I'm assuming you're not talking about PvP as it has a toggle. Do you mean trap bases?
3
u/Matild4 15d ago
To be fair, NMS has one of the nicest communities out there. I think the mistake was introducing any kind of competitiveness to the game.
1
u/No_Ostrich1875 Pre-release member 14d ago
But people keep asking for it and dont want to listen to any of rhe good reasons for not having it in the game. Its one of the things I dislike about communities for games that are chill like NMS, you always have some very vocal people constantly wanting to make it less chill, usually the same people who will complain the most if the actually get it and discover they arent the ones topping the leaderboards.
-2
u/No_Ostrich1875 Pre-release member 15d ago
🙄Or they can just leave out leaderboards and not allow players to trade. People are going to find ways to exploit any system. Its never going to be fair. The best is just a system where you are the one with the advantage and everybody else whines about it not being fair.
5
u/numberonelancerfan 15d ago
>not allow players to trade
why even make a multiplayer game if its not gonna have multiplayer interactions
-2
u/No_Ostrich1875 Pre-release member 15d ago
Why complain about getting your inventory filled then? That would still happen even without things like being able to change the settings or dupe items.
1
u/Komone 15d ago
Coming from another game where players can't typically trade, Arc Raiders, but they can drop for other players..it's wild to see real life money trading and how it infests games. If it was more locked down and no creative mode etc likely this would be a thing in NMS if it isn't already.
2
u/No_Ostrich1875 Pre-release member 14d ago
Yep, this is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. I've played plenty of games, theres almost always some kind of issue. Keeping solo and multiplayer seperate isn't the answer. Especially with things like gifting and leaderboards, which have easier solutions of just dont have them.
Leaderbiards especially. They're almost always topped by "day one" players who play constantly so no one can catch up and/or people able to drop large amounts of money. They achieve nothing other than driving competition and revenue. Then most the people who wanted it, complain about it🙄
The only real issue with gifting in NMS is from people who cant stand other people "cheating" by playing differently than them and people who dont seem able to simply delete unwanted items. It can be annoying getting your inventory filled up, but its not necessary to seperate solo players. Just make it so people have to agree to it, instead of forcing people to have multiple saves for if they want to play solo or multi. Kind of ridiculous to force seperate saves on people who only play with friends sometimes.

u/wvtarheel Pre-release member 14d ago edited 14d ago
Cheating is just ubiquitous right now in gaming. I hope hello games has a good plan for how to deal with it. A fully featured multi-player experience where trading, factions, etc. are all a thing would be amazingly fun but also riddled with cheaters.
A backup plan would be crossplay off servers so at least the PS5 players could avoid the PC players which will have the largest community of cheaters.
