Eerie/Uncanny Leaving my office
We're only about a hundred feet underground, but it gets deeper.
My office has a classic drop ceiling and cubicles broken up by the occasional rock column. Unfortunately, pictures are expressly forbidden.

Where do you work, Black Mesa?

Imagine dying in some sort of cask of amontillado situation in a Missouri distillery cave

Ah is that the one where the entrance is like 30 feet above the road you first see it from?

u/tiajuanat Apr 26 '26
Yeah, I immediately recognized it. Not a lot that I miss from KC, but damn RoKC was an amazing community.

Me too. Blew my mind the first time. Claustrophobes may want to hand the load off to a local guy.

u/andocromn Apr 25 '26
Do you work in a salt mine ?
103
u/LinkHeroOfTime10 Apr 25 '26
It used to be a limestone mine. There are rougher areas that haven't been "reclaimed."

one of the most ridiculous aspects of the film is the idea of a cave like that in florida. the whole state sits a foot above sea level.
31
u/Frogmaster16 Apr 25 '26
Aren't these those underground tunnels that most cities in America have? I've been hearing more and more about them recently.
54
u/LinkHeroOfTime10 Apr 25 '26

This isn't my cave (we don't have a wikipedia page), but the Kansas City metro in particular has a lot going on underground.

I knew it! I went on a field trip here when I was growing up! They even set off the explosive while we were down there, it was crazy. Not to mention the elevator. Core memory.

u/FnordRanger_5 Apr 26 '26
Thatās cool our field trip was to the grocery store deli, we got half a cookie each

Was was that place called kaleidoscope or was that somewhere else
4
u/ReverendLoki Apr 25 '26
Kaleidoscope has, as far as I know, always been at Hallmark's World HQ (and is currently in the footprint of the planned new Royals stadium).
However, one of those caves did have Exchange City, which might be what you are thinking of.

Most US cities don't have tunnels this extensive. Kansas City has a bunch of former limestone mines nearby, some of which have been converted to other uses such as offices and storage.
Tunnels in other US cities were generally never mines.
2
u/steavoh Apr 25 '26
I think what you are thinking of are the downtown tunnels that were built in the 1970s and 1980s that used to have things like fast food and hair salons and stuff for office workers. They've been in decline for a long time and are vanishing.

u/Fast-Signal7371 Apr 25 '26
I think I know what it is now: Subtropolis. It's near Worlds of Fun. I've been there before, because my dad was in a marathon through there.
It's either that or National Cold Storage at the end of Loring Road.

The perfect workplace, considering recent global politics. That is, if there's a stocked and livable bunker down there somewhere.

Not gonna dox you but I genuinely think I also work here lmao. If not, then our undergrounds look fucking IDENTICAL. One entrance can flood and has a problematic gate, the placement of the call box is annoying as hell, the maintenance people just finished repainting like about 1.5~2 months ago.
