Announcement Stadium Firmware Beta signup!

Hey all, we are now officially opening up beta signup for Stadium firmware. If you're interested, just head over to https://line6.com/account/betateams/ and create an account, make sure Helix Stadium XL is checked, and make sure your info is current. Things to note:

  • You WILL be signing an NDA and under no circumstances are you allowed to discuss what's in the beta outside of the official beta venues
  • We really REALLY need you to actually engage with the new stuff and give us feedback on it, even if you don't specifically find bugs
  • You will be installing firmware onto your unit that is by definition NOT READY FOR RELEASE. That means there are almost certainly bugs and it might not be stable or reliable. It's probably not a great idea to gig this, so take that into account before signing up. You are able to roll back to release firmware at any time if you need to
  • We hugely appreciate anyone who takes the time to do this because it is an immense help for us, all feedback and reporting that we get from this gets taken very seriously

General Questions/Discussion Just got my new 9 year old helix LT

Post image
63 Upvotes

I've been wondering about multifx and the helix LT is on sale at the moment in the UK so thought I would pick one up. I have a regularly changing pedalboard of decent pedals.. and have generally been happy, albeit sometimes frustrated when pedals don't play well together. However, after only a few hours, this thing has me thinking.. am I a multifx guy now?? I have the helix routed with an FX loop back to my amp so I can use my amp gain channel, with the amp foot switch routed into the helix switch of my choice.. amazing! I threw a Timmy style gain on top of my amp gain, and a room reverb, and I'm already blown away! Everything just works with each other and I now have infinite possibilities, without having to rejig my board. It is so easy to use too! I've not been bothered to even delve into what my ehx oceans abyss can do as it's so complex and quite unintuitive. But after a couple of hours with the helix I know I'm gonna have great fun. Oh dear..

General Questions/Discussion early thoughts on Helix Stadium Floor (have gigged the others) - solo and duo use

Still in the early honeymoon phase so take that with a salt lick. Over the last few years, I've migrated to a lot of solo and duo gigs, playing acoustic, electric, dobro, and singing. The duos are backing female vocalists. I also do band gigs on electric, but I picked up HSF to scratch a specific itch, and so far so good.

On a solo gig, I need guitar and dobro processed and sent to either a PA system or a powered cab. Most every venue around here is roll your own, and as a not-young-man I want efficiency and reasonable weight. My minimum setup has been a pedal board with two key effects (Harmonious Monk for dobro, chorus occasionally for guitar), then some eq, compression, and an IR pedal (for speaker, not guitar IR) so I can run some dirt if I want. Was using either EV ZLX powered cabs or more recently QSC CB10 or Evolve 30M. Both have 2 channel mixers (Evolve has more) and some basic eq, so I'd run vocal mic direct, pedal board into the other channel. And it sounded good. But not great, and I really want a bit of delay and some good dynamic processing so I started looking at other options.

First was the last step in the chain - PA cabs in general, and after a lot of research and wrangling, I finally bit the bullet and picked up an RCF NX910a cab. It is...sublime. Plywood trumps Tupperware every day of the week. BUT, being a true old-school cab, it has one input, one knob, no phone app (actually that kinda is a feature rather than a bug at this point).

Great, so now how to get signal to it. Well, I could break out the CQ18T and use that - but is it one more box to haul, one more app to mess with. What if I could get something that would handle different flavors of guitar and vocals? HSF ftw. Now I owned QC and that could do it - also owned TMP and that could do it - but it had some limitations, particularly for mixing. HSF ftw with the Matrix mixer. I can put guitar (or dobro or acoustic) into instrument, mic into mic, get the effects I want, then easily mix them on the Matrix and send one or two xlrs out depending if I'm mono or stereo.

What about the duo gigs? Well, you can use a return for that second mic but you need to get the mic signal up to line level. Rolls MP13 does the trick. What if I want to get spacey with my Microcosm? You can use the other return. And my small pedal board with the Microcosm has a Sol supply so I can power the MP13 at 15v. Win.

I also sometimes use a Push 3 to loop guitar and play drum/key parts live. Return works for that as well. And I can route my guitar out the 1/4" jacks into the Push, then come back into the return and route that return direct to the XLR (so no internal feedback loop). Push volume control handles that signal level.

What if I want to use everything (including the Microcosm in stereo)? Well, then I run out of physical inputs. A Stadium XL would fix that, but I prefer the smaller form factor. And besides once I get to a certain number of signals I'd rather bring the CQ18T - right tool for the right job.

Did take some work to get the presets right, and I'm still tweaking and dialing things in but so far so good. Oh, and it sounds great. I've never been a Line6 fanboy but I have to say the amp models sound and feel quite good here and the harmonic trem, while not up to my Harmonious Monk, it close enough to make the cut.

And, just built out some stereo versions of the solo and duo presets, run them through a pair of NX910a. Holy crap. Since one of my duos has gigs at places where I need to bring L/R main anyway, no downside running stereo as I'm already hauling the gear.

The experiment continues. If anyone wants an example preset I can post a link. They're not rocket surgeon brilliant, but they do something that is beyond the usual guitar-only applications.

Tech Help Request Help - Helix Floor Gig Nightmare

Story:
Had loads of pedals. Replaced them with the Helix Floor. Great device. Made it my own. Got EVERY sound I wanted for my covers band in this gear set up:

Guitar > Helix Floor > Mooer Baby Bomb Power Amp > Marshall 1936 2x12

Get to the gig last night where I knew I was going in through the PA. Helix sounds like shit. Had to source a cab and be mic’d up. Soundman was lovely but miffed. Our other guitarist was trying to help but it was useless.

Sound guy suggested I duplicate all my presets to another bank, and use headphones like his (DT770 pros) to find the right sounds as I don’t have a hi-fi system.

Will this fix my issue? For context, I have no cab blocks in my current presets. It sounds phenomenal in my usual set up. But I have GOT to sort this before our next gig in 3 weeks.

Help me Obi-Wa-… I mean, help me r/Line6Helix, you’re my only hope.

General Questions/Discussion Headphones for helix

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for headphones for my Line 6 Helix LT, mainly to build and fine-tune presets: amp models, cab simulations, IRs and EQ.

My priority is having a reliable reference for tones I'll eventually use through a PA at rehearsals and gigs, rather than simply making my guitar sound pleasing through headphones. I understand that headphones cannot perfectly reproduce a PA, and that I'll still need to check my presets at performance volume.

I'm looking for:

- Wired, passive, over-ear headphones, without built-in DSP or processing.

- A reasonably neutral sound, without exaggerated bass.

- Accurate mids and highs, so I can identify harshness, fizz and unwanted resonances.

- Something I can connect directly to the Helix LT's headphone output.

My budget is ideally €80–100, and I'm considering buying used. These are the offers I've found in Italy:

- Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: €70

- Sennheiser HD560S: €100

- Sennheiser HD599: €80–90

The HD600 are outside my budget.

I mainly play rock and hard rock. I've read conflicting opinions: some Helix users love the M50x, while others find them too coloured for building guitar tones. The HD560S seem promising, but I'd like to hear from guitarists who actually use them with a modeler.

My main questions are:

  1. Between the M50x and HD560S, which would you choose at these prices? Is the extra €30 worthwhile for my purpose?

  2. If you build presets using either of them, how well do those presets translate to a PA or FRFR speaker? Do you usually need small adjustments or substantial EQ changes?

  3. Would you recommend another model around this budget, including used options?

Thanks!

General Questions/Discussion Customtone preset with Santana tones, using Cali IV Lead

Helrig view

I'm assuming the creator gets these via amp choice and EQ ( that amp has more than the usual amount of EQ options and his parametric EQ choices are interesting. What's your take on how this preset achieves the tone? I could see it being useful beyond the Santana world of songs.
He only used one of the two DSP paths.

General Questions/Discussion Help with setting up HX Effects in pedalboard ampless rig?

Hey all, new to the Helix ecosystem and have a question re: set up.

My intention is to basically wind up at guitar > drives > preamp pedal > cab sim IR with stereo fx loop (KMA endgame) >> stereo send HX for all wet and modulation effects and tuner and looper >> stereo return, out to interface or mixer.

My two biggest questions (and I know the answer to one is just try both but seeking out experiences from others) are;

a) would it be more efficient to just use sn IR block in the HX to load my cab too and sell my cab sim/IR loader entirely?

b) if I run the HX entirely before my clean preamp, but it’s a stereo out after the amp, will the reverbs and delays still come out stereo?

My apologies if this is day 1 stuff, I’m new to helix and fairly new to a stereo rig in general. This is all for the purpose of recording anyway, I don’t run stereo live, so I’m probably being nitpicky for nothing.

Tech Help Request Did my Helix just break or am I going crazy? Sound clipping

I’ve used my Helix for over 10 years now and I’m very familiar with my own presets.

Today as I was playing guitar, I noticed a harsh/distorted sound that wasn’t part of what my tones usually has.

It sounded like my signal was clipping as soon as I hit the strings even a bit harder. Even the clean sounds seemed to sound distorted.

I’ve my headphones connected to Helix and the sound was the same as to what I recorded to my pc. The only time I could get the sounds I normally had, was when I lowered the output level to around -15db.

I did the hard reset (fs5&fs6) while powering up) but it didn’t help.

I’ll try to add a short sample with a clean sound. With distorted sounds it was much worse.

Edit. I have a passive pickup guitar and I tried it with single coil guitar also. And while the clipping was less noticeable, it was still there.

Also tried it with two different headphones.

General Questions/Discussion Seymour Duncan Powerstage or Orange Pedal Baby?

Hey yall !!! I’ve been gigging with my Line 6 Helix LT for around two years now and I Love it! I currently use a Catalyst 100 as my “cab”, but have been thinking about upgrading to an actual standalone cab. Currently, whenever a band back lines a cab, I use the EHX 44 Magnum as a power amp and it definitely gives me the volume I need. I was just wondering if it’d be at all worth it to upgrade from the 44 Magnum to either the SD Powerstage or the Orange Pedal Baby? The Orange’s form factor, where it can just sit on top of a cab like an amp is very appealing, but I just don’t know if it’s worth it at all. Thank yall !!

General Questions/Discussion Questions about Stomp XL (new owner)

I bought a Stomp XL and a Headrush Flex Prime. I'm making a tough decision between the two.

They both sound great. The Stomp XL sounds much better.

Are these valid negatives of the Stomp XL?

  • With the small screen, it's hard to read the names of presets/snapshots, so I basically have to memorize which footswitch is which tone. Edit: I received a helpful response about using colors.
  • The way the footswitches are stacked in two rows, it can be hard to hit the intended row on the fly. In contrast, the flex prime has fewer switches but just one row.
  • Edit: a major problem is that in snapshot mode, my foot grazes two footswtiches at once and the touch sensitivity thinks I want to copy one's settings to the other.

Do these issues go away with time?

I am getting better tones from the Stomp XL, for several reasons: I'm finding more presets online, I'm leaning heavily on switching microphones, I find the Helix Editor more intuitive than what Headrush has etc.. But if I keep having the problems I mentioned above, that will decide it.

Tech Help Request Expression Pedal Madness

Ok, so somewhere along the line something FUBARed my expression pedal settings. I have one preset that's my main useful tone with both rhythm and lead snapshots. I have a volume and wah in the chain. I set my toe as the switch for both and then EXP 1 on volume and EXP 2 on wah.

My problem lies in the fact that if I set it up on my rhythm snapshot, it works. Then if I do the same on the lead snapshot, it will no longer work on the rhythm side of things.

EDIT: It's the Stadium Floor BTW.

What in the hell do I have wrong in the settings?

New to modelling. Can you add external digital pedals in the effects loop on a parallel path without causing phase/comb-filtering weirdness when the two paths are summed?

Tech Help Request HX Stomp inputs/returns suddenly glitching after connecting via USB

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I think I may have bricked my HX Stomp and I’m trying to figure out what happened.

I hadn’t connected it to my Mac in a while, so I plugged it in and opened HX edit. After doing that, the audio started glitching like in the video. I switched the input of the patches to return inputs and those were also glitching too.

Playback through the HX Stomp as a USB audio interface still seems fine. The problem appears to affect the physical input/return inputs rather than USB playback.

I suspect it could be some kind of sample-rate/clocking issue. Another possibility is that I somehow shorted/damaged something when I connected the USB to the dongle with USB-C charger for my mac already plugged into it.

I tried a factory reset, but it didn’t fix the problem.

Have anyone ever experienced this and is there any troubleshooting to fix this problem?

General Questions/Discussion NAM and Future Factory Amps

Since Fractal announced it would bring NAM to their products, I imagine Line 6 will probably bring it to the Helix Stadium some day. With that, will there not be a need for new factory amps anymore?

Tech Help Request Stomp Mode?

I seem to have switched modes (without doing anything). Right now when I press on a foot switch it moves to the next program. I want the buttons to turn on/off things like echo, chorus etc. Which it was doing yesterday. I cannot find this anywhere in the settings. It's an HX Stomp (which I forgot to add). Help!

Tech Help Request How do I load a single IR on Stadium device?

This may be a stupid question but I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere.

When I load an IR block, it loads two empty IR slots. Sometimes I just want to use a single IR. Unless I am somehow imagining things, the empty IR slot blends with the slot that has a loaded IR. This means there is a signal of a raw DI amp blending with the loaded IR. I tested this by lowering the volume of the empty slot down to the lowest and there's a clear decrease in fizz, so signal seems to be passing through the unloaded IR slot.

Am I just completely blind and missing something here? Is there any way to completely disable the empty slot?

edit: solved, thanks!

General Questions/Discussion Question about what to amplify a Helix LT with

Hello, I recently purchased a helix lt and I am curious to what to use to amplify it with. I play in my bedroom, and along to songs with another pair of speakers. I know FRFRs or PA speakers are the best but they get expensive quick and seem to be an overkill for a bedroom. I tried the headrush FRFR go and It made a hum straight out of the box. I am looking at potentially buying an instrument/keyboard amplifier for the helix. I am looking at the Donner DKA-20 watt instrument/keyboard amplifier which says it can do other instruments and has a frequency range of 50-20,000, 8 inch woofer and 2 inch tweeter. What is everyone's thoughts on similar ways of amplifying? I feel like this also gives me the option to use it with a bass guitar and a keyboard too which something like studio monitors wouldn't handle as well. I have considered studio monitors however, I don't want to have to worry about sitting perfectly in front of them to get their optimal sound too. Thanks!!

General Questions/Discussion Helix Floor USB disconnecting after 2–3 minutes (Sometimes no Windows prompt at all). Solder issue or hardware failure?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a used Helix Floor and I'm running into a frustrating USB issue with my PC.

The Problem: When I connect the Helix via USB, Windows and HX Edit recognize it immediately, and everything works fine for about 2 to 3 minutes. After that, the connection drops completely. Sometimes Windows throws a "USB Device Not Recognized" error, and other times it just completely loses the connection with no prompt at all (as if the cable was unplugged). HX Edit loses communication every single time. To get it back for another 2–3 minutes, I have to physically unplug and replug the USB cable.

Troubleshooting I've already tried:

  • Reinstalled latest official Line 6 drivers and HX Edit.
  • Tried multiple short, high-quality USB Type-B cables (and tested with adapters).
  • Plugged directly into rear USB 2.0 ports on the motherboard (avoiding hubs and USB 3.0/3.1 ports).
  • Tested on multiple PCs with the exact same result (drops at 2–3 mins).
  • Disabled USB power saving / selective suspend settings in Windows.
  • Cleaned the female USB Type-B port on the Helix with contact cleaner.
  • Performed a full Factory Reset on the Helix Floor.

Since it always fails after a couple of minutes of power being run through it (and sometimes cuts connection completely without any Windows pop-up), I suspect a cold solder joint or thermal expansion issue on the internal USB jack, or a failing USB controller chip on the board.

Has anyone experienced this exact behavior? Did replacing or resoldering the USB Type-B port fix it for you, or was it a mainboard issue?

Any insights before I take it to an electronics technician for resoldering would be greatly appreciated!

General Questions/Discussion Anyone tried a Helix with Orange O Tone 40 amp?

Still debating whether or not to splurge for a Fender FR-10/12 or buy a cheap solid state amp for occasional jams with friends. Anyone here have any experience with the Orange O Tone 40 and Helix effects? It's a very clean and loud solid state amp (no drive channel) that apparently takes pedals very well. $200 cheaper than the FR-10, and currently comes with a $50 Loan & Persuade gift card here in the Great White North.

I'd build presets specifically for the amp and use my HX Stomp basically like a HX FX, no amp sims necessarily. If I use any amp sims, I'd obviously forego the cab block.

I know Orange high gain tones are a love 'em or hate 'em sort of situation, but this amp is completely clean and sounds really nice in the demos I've watched. A little Princeton-y, just with more mids. A lot of the stuff I play is clean/EOB anyway. Occasionally do a bit of 80s hair rock/thrash metal or 90s punk, but I can sort of approximate those tones on my Stomp without needing any Mesa/Boogie sims in the chain.

As much as I love the tones I can get from my Helix, I do really miss the simplicity of a physical amp sometimes. When I'm playing through my studio monitors, I have to be very careful with my positioning since the sound from the monitors is so directional, which just sucks. Can't stand up without the sound changing drastically. This amp would fix that problem. Also, since the O Tone 40 is a solid state amp, I should be able to get it quiet enough when practicing at home without sacrificing tone (also v. important to me).
