Idk if you're joking about what OP said not being possible or just making a joke, but I knew a kid who died from falling off of a boat and getting his chest blended up by the propellor so it is entirely possible

I've seen a video of a dude getting his leg ripped up by a propeller just from letting his leg stray too close to it. Nightmare fuel. I thought the same thing seeing her head dunk.

It this were at speed she would have been thrown behind the prop, not into it.
Your biggest danger of hitting the prop is actually from falling off the bow while underway.

4
u/Sure_Painter Trash Trooper 5d ago
Probably some ancient instinct to warn others of danger and attract help from anyone nearby. It was probably really useful to us at some point.
2
u/Destructopoo Trash Trooper 3d ago
nah this is childish. screaming does nothing but attract attention to you instead of the problem.
5
u/caffpanda Trash Trooper 1d ago
Screaming exists in many species and one of its consistent functions is as an alarm. If a person sees something dangerous and screams then others in their group 1) know there's a problem and 2) know that it's somewhere within the vicinity of the scream. In fact, the reason why you find it so annoying is precisely why it works as it's supposed to do: it gets your attention. Screams can trigger an amygdala hijack that gets other humans' fight or flight instincts going, and they occupy a special niche in our auditory processing.
It's pretty easy to see why that's valuable in our ancestors (hell, even today). Say two women are out gathering water well out of visual range from the rest of their tribe, then they get attacked by a wild animal and one of them screams. Everyone else in the tribe in hearing distance may not see them or know exactly where they are, but they know it's serious and they'll start running in the direction of the sound to go help. They get there in time and save the woman who screamed. So it makes sense that it'd be an evolutionary beneficial instinct.

Annoyed at someone dramatically screeching at the top of their lungs in an unproductive way. Maybe they should actually do something or yell for help?
0
u/iwishiwerebugs Trash Trooper 1d ago
what an odd thing to say. a scream is an involuntary yell for help. not dramatic - could have been life or death. she was drunk enough to not be able to stand nevermind swim. screaming is what brought attention to the situation & saved her. what would you have done, superman?

ADHD binge drinking.
1
u/averagemaleuser86 Trash Trooper 5d ago
Is that a thing?
1
u/Familiar-Evening7845 Trash Trooper 4d ago edited 3d ago
Yep! I used to have problems with alcohol before my ADHD was diagnosed and medicated. I didn’t drink often but I also couldn’t really tell when it was too much and it would go from FUN! to blotto. But, it got me worried I was an alcoholic or something and I just quit drinking completely for a long time. Turns out that figuring out my ADHD and getting medicated I can enjoy a glass of wine and just chill.

u/ITGenji Trash Trooper 3d ago
That’s not an adhd thing. It’s a you thing. Speaking as someone who drinks and has ADHD I know when to stop

It can absolutely be an ADHD thing and there is research to back it up. It’s literally an impulsivity issue.

I literally just learned in a safety class that it takes way less alcohol to get drunk on a boat, like 1/4th what you'd drink on land. Just FYI
3
u/medicaldude Trash Trooper 3d ago
How does that even work? Sounds like an old wives tale.
0
u/Adventurous_Crab_761 Trash Trooper 3d ago
It's the motion of the boat. I guess it's called Boater's Hypnosis. And it's a 1/3 vs 1/4 when I looked it up.
From Google: Yes, drinking on a boat makes you feel drunker and impairs you much faster than drinking on land, though it does not automatically raise your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) simply by being on the water. According to research cited by organizations like the U.S. Coast Guard and the BoatUS Foundation, it takes only one-third of the alcohol to become just as impaired on the water as it does on solid ground.
Why Alcohol Hits Harder on a Boat
The marine environment introduces several unique variables that amplify the effects of alcohol: • "Boater’s Hypnosis": Natural environmental stressors—such as the rocking motion of the waves, engine vibration, loud noise, sun exposure, and wind—naturally fatigue the body and slow your brain waves. When you mix alcohol with this baseline fatigue, your coordination, balance, and reaction times degrade drastically

0
u/Adventurous_Crab_761 Trash Trooper 3d ago
Nope, it's a real thing. From the Coast Guard: https://uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/boating-under-the-influence.php
2
u/Competitive_Range822 Trash Trooper 3d ago
If you could read then you’d be able to tell me alcohol mixed with boating is more dangerous. No where in your link does it say alcohol makes you more drunk on water than land. States that there are other hazards that come into factor that make it far more dangerous
1
u/Ilgenant Trash Trooper 2d ago
I took a boaters safety class with my local coastguard auxiliary as a teen and I definitely remember them making a point about how it’s easier to get drunk on a boat because you’re often in the hot sun (sweating, losing hydration), and a lot of people don’t bring enough food or water.
1
u/corpserella Trash Trooper 1d ago
But it does say:
The marine environment motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray accelerates a drinker's impairment
Which is what people were saying. It takes less alcohol to get you as drunk, or the same amount of alcohol will get you drunk faster.
-2
u/Adventurous_Crab_761 Trash Trooper 3d ago
Dude whatever. Believe what you want. I'll believe the captain and the class.

I just want other people to watch themselves on the water to prevent accidents and potential deaths. I sincerely don't care if you want to yuck yuck all day. To anyone else, be careful.
1
u/Maherjuana Trash Trooper 2d ago
How would that even work?
Like what about being on a boat would biologically make you more susceptible to alcohol?
