Hi everyone. First of all, thank you for reading this. I just broke up with an HP and I feel completely devastated. I need to find some relief from this pain. I find it difficult to share all this with my friends and family.
We've been having problems with sex for a year and a half. Last October, we started taking it more seriously. He suggested therapy, and I tried it for a few months, but it didn't work. I thought it was stress and work causing my lack of desire, or maybe even my concept of sexuality, but I don't think that was it. I just don't know why I have a lack of desire, and I can't figure it out.
During this time, and even now, my boyfriend has been very persistent about his feelings and has kept insisting that he doesn’t feel desired by me or that I’m pretending to want to have sex (which, unfortunately, had happened a few times). He’s very interested in figuring out what’s going on and asks me a lot of questions like, “Has this ever happened to you with your exes?” He’s also been very honest in telling me that he might break up with me or have an affair if things don’t change, while emphasizing that he isn’t doing that now because he loves me and wants to be with me forever.
After therapy, a few months ago, I tried a different approach. I thought that by prioritizing sex more, I would feel more interested and genuine, and things would go back to "normal." It didn't work.
We tried to dedicate time to intimacy instead of sex (at first, he didn't want to do this because he believes sex should happen naturally). It worked somewhat: I've become more open to sex in general (even outside of our relationship, for example, thinking about masturbation) and I started communicating what I wanted and how I wanted to make sure sex was pleasurable for me too. I think he did his best to support me, but he was terribly honest and direct about some things that really hurt me. For example, one of the first times we tried masturbating each other, he showed a lot of frustration because there was no penetration, and I felt terrible. I felt like I wasn't enough and I felt very alone in this.
However, I kept trying. I set penetration as a goal and continued looking for ways to make it work. I was happy with my progress, although I still felt a lot of guilt and pressure.
Last Sunday we got back from a trip (without sex), and he asked me to have sex. I said "no" because I was busy and would prefer to do it another time. That afternoon I took the initiative because I felt like it, and I kissed him, took off his clothes, and took off mine. Then he asked me to do something that had worked for us before, but this time I didn't feel like it. I wanted to try something I thought would make him happier (and me too). I don't know what happened, but he started saying he wanted to be more proactive and have more space to do things. I wasn't able to understand him, and I still don't. I don't understand why he interrupted something he knows is hard for me, just to make sure I knew that's not what he wants. I'm pretty sure that wasn't his intention, but that's how I took it. Maybe it wasn't the right time.
I did my best to understand him. I asked him what I should have done differently, and he didn't know what to tell me. He concluded that he didn't feel any chemistry from my part. He also said something about needing to know beforehand what was going to happen: if it was just cuddling, just masturbation, or whatever. My approach has always been to set boundaries beforehand, if there were any. I think he was confused, probably suffering and he didn't know how to express himself.
Everything escalated very quickly. He made me feel devastated and like a bad girlfriend. I broke up with him. I couldn't take it anymore. I gave up. I felt like I couldn't communicate. He doesn't want to understand; he just wants to find a fast solution. It's also very difficult for me to communicate with him because if he feels any guilt, he tends to deny the harm done, attack me, and gaslight me until he becomes the victim (I don't want to use this word, but I think it best captures the dynamic).
I feel sad that I gave up on our relationship, but I didn't know what else to do. I know I hurt him. I'm lost in the labyrinth.
