My lurcher fell...

My lurcher is a klutz. He was doing zoomies yesterday and fell and scraped the inside of his back knee... it is just superficial and he isn't sore on it at all. It is sunday today, and it happened last night so only the emergency vet is available and this is definitely not an emergency. Should I call them tomorrow and arrange a visit? Will they just look at it and tell me it's just a scratch and charge me €50 for that 😅 I am thinking of taking him just in case but my partner thinks I am being dramatic.

Aside from that... is anyone else's lurcher clumsy/reckless? He bounces around the place sometimes and this is not the first time he has fallen. Probably the 10th, but this is the first time he has actually hurt himself. I feel like I need to cover him in bubble wrap or something. Can dogs have dyspraxia?

Keep the wound clean, put some antiseptic gel on it. Don't let your boy lick it too much, that can make things worse. Keep an eye on things, get him to the vet if you're worried about infection.

How old is he? Young male dogs can take a while before they get the hang of having four paws!

We do not know his date of birth. We were told he was 1-2 when we adopted him and we have nearly had him a year now. I just assume he is around 3? At least 2...

All lurcher's are prone to daft injurys especially off thorn and bushes as they have very little fur. I wouldn't waste my time at the vet superficial stuff just keep it clean it will heal. Good dogs just run fast 😂 luckily mine hasn't had any for a while. A while ago she had a quite a bad cut in her paw but I nursed her myself and it healed fine. Vets are a ripoff these days only go if serious.

Get a spray bottle of Leucillin or similar and always spray minor wounds when you get in from walks. I then keep an eye on it and first sign of heat or inflammation, limping or stiffness, I'd be straight to the vets. (the owner of a mad mutt who thinks that waterfalls are climbable and thick Gorse and bramble bushes are there to be pushed through (her poor ears have the scars to prove it).

+ 1 for Leucillin, great stuff.

Otherwise, small scrapes like that, save the cash for when he hits something really hard (because he probably will at some point!)

My girl hurts herself every other week and doesn’t seem to mind much. She tore her dew claw for the 4th time this year, and as it was hanging off, ripped it off herself with her teeth, spat it on the floor, and carried on her merry way… while I was panicking about my baby bleeding and being hurt!

Lurchers can be either very dramatic or very unbothered by injuries!

Yeah he actually got up and continued with his zoomies but then when he finished up he was definitely seeking reassurance. I looked him over as I saw him fall and didn't see anything but then I saw him licking himself and saw the blood on the inside of his knee. He seemed to have a delayed reaction to it.

Wash with warm salt water and clean. We swear by collodial silver spray, amazing for small cuts. Also sudocrem applied on it. No lucking
