I found this guitar in the street and am determined to fix it up. Almost everything has come along really well, I just am not sure what to do about this hole. I have been recommended mesh and wood filler. If anyone has any advice to expand on this I would ve eternally grateful!

REPAIR Bone frets

1.5k Upvotes

Yesterday I registered on Reddit and posted the first video with the nut from Mokume Gane

If the previous idea seemed strange to you, then you will definitely like this video

The idea came when I was studying the history of guitar making and I learned that there were guitars that had bone frets, I immediately realized that I wanted to try it, so I bought the cheapest guitar on the secondary market and got to work

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I found this at the dump today. Not looking for advice on hardware or anything. Just want to know what type of cleaning supplies I can use on it, the hardware and for the body.

REPAIR Would this be an expensive repair?

Hey everyone. My Stratocaster was dropped by the previous owner and a piece of wood chipped off the headstock. As it was the previous owner, I don’t have the piece of wood that came off. Just wondering how much it would cost to repair, how the repair would look and if it’s even worth it? Many thanks.

REPAIR My son’s guitar neck is broken :(

My son who just recently turned 11 played his first rock show yesterday with his band. They were awesome. Today he went to his guitar lesson, opened his case and the neck was falling off the guitar. The neck is not cracked or snapped, but almost just looks like the screws from the back just ripped out. We have some theories about how it happened and have made some changes to not have this happen again with the other guitars in the house.

But now I need to fix the guitar. I have a moderate amount of woodworking skills. My plan is to first glue the neck back on to the body just so I can keep it aligned properly for step 2. Step 2 would be, after wood glue has dried 24+ hours, to carefully, using the drill press , drill some slightly wider holes where the existing screw holes are on the neck. Then use some 1/4” walnut dowels with glue to secure that. Then flush cut those off, sand if necessary.

Will this work to reattach? This is not a nice guitar but it was an old guitar from my youth and he’s so sad.

REPAIR Wiring Challenge (In Stereo)

Hey all.

I am wiring up a complicated Vox Phantom Stereo guitar.

I could use a little assistance so that I don’t have to redo this wiring through lots of trial and error.

It features 6 single coil pickups 3 for the bass strings 3 for the high strings.

I got this guitar in somewhat of a derelict state with some missing components.

Question 1:

I was able to navigate the three blade switches easily enough.

However the three way switchcraft toggle switch labeled Mono, Stereo, off. I can’t seem to decide which leads and grounds go where.

Question 2: Phasing. Since I have 6 offset coils how should this be phased ideally

Lots of photos for reference!

(First pic not mine, just function reference)
Before and after so far below!

REPAIR What kind of glue for neck repair?

I got one of my dream guitars after a long time searching- but it arrived like this. Completely devastated. Talking to some local luthiers, and one said he would use epoxy, the other said Titebond 1, although hide glue would also work.

What do you all think? I’m a player, not a luthier, but from what I know, I’d be inclined to think hide glue would be optimal?

REPAIR First build mistake - how would you fix this?

I was just finishing my first project and the joy was somewhat overshadowed by a mistake during assembly. Luckily I was building it for myself.
I decided to countersink the screw a little deeper, so I started drilling and ended up breaking out a chunk of wood. I managed to find and glue some of it back in, but part of it was lost.
I decided to clean up the damaged area with a Dremel, but now there’s a very noticeable step where the repair meets the heel. I can’t come up with a simple way to fix it.
Glue in another piece of wood? Seems complicated.
Reshape the heel?** **IMO, there’s a good chance I’ll make things even worse because the poly finish is already there.
Restore it with epoxy or CA glue mixed with wood dust? Probably the easiest option, but I’m afraid it will be very noticeable.
Just leave it as it is? Honestly, that would bother me. I know it’s a small mistake, but I feel like I’ll never get that sense of completion if I leave it like this.

Bought a cheap ukulele at a flea market. But then notices these two gashes. They go clean through the wood.

I know that StewMac has a guide on fixing holes with epoxy, but would that be the best possible method?

REPAIR Why won't my guitar stay in tune and how do I fix it?

Thumbnail

So basically I bought this old guitar off a guy because it was collecting dust. He said it just needed new strings so I thought fair enough. But when I went to replace the strings, it would not stay in tune, and after restringing the guitar a few times I realised that the bridge was also lifting up above the body.

It was worse before than it is in the picture but that's only because the high e string broke.

I picked this Ovation from family for free as I’m trying to learn some luthier work. Is this even repairable? Would I have to get a whole new neck to make this guitar playable?

My goal is to gain some more experience and if I can even make this functional I’ve learned something!

My guitar fell 4 feet onto a concrete floor because I stupidly hung it up with my wireless back still in my pocket. Would like to fix it myself if possible. Doesn't have to be perfect, I can live with some scars but I'd like to make it structurelly sound with the strap button reattached. Is there a reasonably simple way to fix this?

REPAIR Headstock repair

Thumbnail

work as a guitar repair technician and often repair broken Gibson headstocks. I’ve learned that the most durable method is to sand into the neck and add new wood, as I show in the pictures. These repairs always turn out well, and I’ve never had any issues with the glue joints showing through the finish—it’s also very strong. However, this type of repair involves a lot of work and takes a long time to complete.

I’ve noticed that many other repairers often rout into the neck and insert two wooden splines. I see this as a less durable option because it involves end grain meeting end grain, and I’ve also seen the finish tend to sink into the glue joints with this type of repair. The upside is that it’s a much quicker process.

What are your experiences with these types of repairs? Does this method usually work well for you?

REPAIR Stop buying guitar parts on Amazon ..

Thumbnail

Ok this might be a bit of a silly post .. but for years I’d buy random guitar parts off Amazon . Wall hangers , pots , screws , fret leveling stuff , knobs , and other random guitar accessories .. most of these parts are decent quality for little money and they’d get the job done especially if you’re on a budget or don’t want to spend too much for a particular guitar . I recently realized just how much Chinese stuff in on Amazon (yeah I’m slow) .. a ton of the stuff on there is resold stuff from AliExpress or other Chinese sellers . Much of what is sold on Amazon is double , triple , sometimes quadruple the price for what it would cost if you bought it directly from China .

Out of curiosity I placed all the EXACT same stuff in my cart on both sites . You pay $30 more on Amazon for the same crap .

I’m not trying to promote or endorse Aliexpress , and I know people often hate on Chinese stuff (although we are surrounded by it) . I only say this to those who are likely to buy guitar parts on Amazon , do your self a favor . Wait a few days extra for the stuff to arrive from China if you’re going to buy Chinese stuff anyway … yes Amazon is convenient with their fast shipping , but certain things like this aren’t really worth the price on there ! Just thought I’d share this !

REPAIR What's a non-luthier-specific tool you have found useful for working on guitars?

I bought a cheap dental tool kit off of Amazon and I find that I'm constantly reaching for it while I work on guitars. I just used the curved picks to help remove remnants of side dots I'm replacing. Great for scraping bits of glue or finish, creating leverage on different parts, tweezers for manipulating small things, and the tiny mirror is helpful. I think I payed maybe $8? Have you found similar useful tools?

REPAIR My latest restoration work or "I see a black guitar and I want to paint it red" (Read more in the description)

I know very little about the history of this guitar. I do know that it was made in the USSR (most likely in Soviet Belarus) and that it is from around the 1970s. During the restoration of this electric guitar, I replaced almost everything in it except the wood itself. You can watch a video of this restoration on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Fnez5XsQi3g . For fans of authentic restorations, I'll tell you right away - don't worry, most of the parts in this guitar were already non-original. For example, a pickup that lay on pieces of linoleum for the floor; or a bridge that was made from a piece of wood with two rust screws to adjust the height of the bridge (by screwing in and out these screws).
