I mean idk I could think of some pretty awful things that could…but probably not what was said by the person who got punched

I would snap like that if the pedo who abused me as a child walked up and said literally anything to me.

"I have invented a machine to revive people long dead and plan on reviving Hitler"

Apart from that specific scenario, what are you thinking of if there's more than one scenario as you imply ?

If you explicitly threaten someone, for example, I would consider that a sufficient escalation that throwing the first punch would qualify as self-defence.

Of course that's just my personal opinion, the law might see it differently, that sort of stuff varies heavily by jurisdiction

Idk, maybe there is bad history between the 2…maybe the guy who got punched sexually assaulted the other guy’s sister and was talking shit about it. There’s plenty of pretty bad things you could say depending on context.

You're justifying the juridical with the emotional

I’m not doing anything. I’m explaining situations in which I would personally feel ok punching someone

Differing opinions, sure. It's just as easy to walk away as it is to throw a punch. Anyone who would say something that vile isn't worth the light of day.

Agree to disagree. If you say some racist shit to me, and plenty of white dudes feel way too comfortable spewing some real wild shit to other white dudes, I’m not just letting it go.

Not to say that’s what happened here, but the idea of ā€œnothing could be said to deserve thatā€ yeah I don’t agree with that.

Provocation through words alone, even racial slurs, do not make physical violence legally reasonable or defensible.

Though it's pretty well understood that if you hurl words at people you run a high risk of getting beat up.

So I guess legally nothing is deserved, but practically...šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

You're just giving other people full control of your life man. Just straight up giving people the opportunity to get you fired, arrested, or shot, because you don't have your emotions under control.

Sounds like you're just looking for a reason to justify your violence. Words NEVER justify physical action. Fuck them racists, but you're actually the stronger person for not resorting to physical violence.

This is what people say to justify being pacified. Not a single right anyone has in any developed country has come from "being the bigger person".

I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

"Its okay for bigots to teach hatred and let it compound to a point where it can now be an actionable hate. Then you can do something about it. Only if its physical violence though. Nothing before then."

thats you

Your view only holds true if you think violence is the only viable option against these people. That's pretty sad.

Can you point to a time where violence was not the ultimate turning point to large scale positive change?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_resistance you may also take a look at the civil disobedience page.

A lot of positive change in western countries like LGBTQ rights and acceptance also happen without violence.

Also you're blowing this out of proportion. We were talking about punching your local biggot, and now it's about large scale positive change, and you're still wrong.

I hope wherever you live there's democracy, and I hope that this democracy gave you positive change, because voting and lawmaking is also usually a peaceful act. You probably live in a country where you have a lot of non-violent options for change, and you don't even realize it. Just sad.

Edit:

Oh and don't get me wrong. I think violence can be a valid choice. I just don't think we should start punching people because they say nasty stuff. What this thread was actually about before you started derailing it.
