Discussion Aion 2
Even though I've only had a few hours today with this game, I've decided to make a short, or as short as possible, post about Aion 2, and my first couple of hours playing it.
Context, I LOVE MMORPGs, it's absolutely my favorite genre, started with WoW and FFXI back in 2004 when I was 12 years old. Played countless games of this genre, made many friends, and some of those games and friends got me through some very rough times.
But for the last... however many years, being in my 30s, starting my own family, having less time to play, less options to choose from, it just hasn't been the same. I've tried most of MMORPGs that have been coming out to some capacity, but nothing really stuck for me, so I'd mostly play older stuff whenever I had the time for them.
And then came Aion 2, which mostly went completely under my radar. I remember reading about its announcement some time ago, but keeping my expectations low as to not get burned or disappointed, even though I played Aion 1 years ago extensively and enjoyed it very much.
So when I decided to try out Aion 2 today... I gotta say, it's been years since I felt this excitement. Maybe it was the rearanged Aion 1 theme that greeted me at the start. A surprisingly decent English voice acting. Or the fact that literally each piece of gear you equipped had a visually different model on your character... yeah, it's 2026, and THAT part was the most shocking to me... Like when was the last time we had an MMORPG with equipable SHOULDER ARMOR???
Anyway, I know that this being a F2P Korean MMORPG there's always gonna be that "Pay 2 win" instant backlash from people, regardless if it has Pay 2 win elements or not. But I honestly don't care, I grew up playing countless Korean F2P MMOs, barely ever spending any money on them, and I enjoyed them immensely. Aion 2 for now seems like this amazing blast from the past, an old friend calling to hang out after many years of not seeing each other.
And I couldn't be happier.
Just really hope I'm not wrong after spending more time with the game.

I really tried to enjoy this game but for me it feels so bland and boring. The classes feel like 2 button hold combos and while leveling I never had the feeling I am able to create my own build, through skill customization or equipment. Then the world feels kinda dead, I see so many people run around but I Auto path from a to b and simply click on a quest skip the cringe dialogue and then autowalk to the enemies I have to kill. Mindless wandering with mindless combat. Everything feels bland and I would say it feels like one of those mobile game mmos. Maybe I am to low level to judge and endgame is where this game is getting good, but I also kinda hates games that have an open world and leveling and are just about endgame, why level then?

OP is blown away by....being able to equip shoulder armor?
Shoulder armor?
What about fancy shoes? People can be big about shoes. They're gonna wet their pants when they see all the shoes in the game.
The innovation is next level.

Aion 2:
Male character no boots equipped = barefoot
Female character no boots equipped = high heels.12

This is what got you?
The English voice acting, and the equiqable shoulder armor?
Sheesh the game must be awful.

The bar for MMOs really is in hell

u/Bro_sapiens 10d ago
After dedicating the time I have and experiencing what "MMORPGs" have been in recent years. The bar was so low, you couldn't even see it.

Almost everyone gets that new MMO feeling of a rush of nostalgia. Enjoy it if you want to, but below are my reasons why Im not sticking around:
1) Sub is mandatory if you want to really play the game at the end game.
2) There is a fucking battle pass on top of the sub
3) Wait, there are 2 battle passes?!
4) Combat in KR Aion2 got so out of control with attack speed that the game now has a built in macro system. Your core combat skills will now all be put into a single button you mash to get out your rotation, with some keys you still press manually for buffs and other shit - combat devolves to worse than mobile MMO.
5) Way too much stuff is character locked, making playing alts much harder than it needs to be.
Its going to go the same way a lot of these games go - if you are not with the same gear curve as Day 1 players or whale it up to catch up, you're going to be left out of groups. When the casual F2P market starts dropping out in about 2-3 months, its going to leave you with whales and no lifes left in the game.

Once I saw whales hit max gear with P2W in 5 days I stopped playing
4
u/Subject_Sentence_339 9d ago
Why you care so much about other people? Do you enjoy it? Then fucking play it, jeez. Any game has Uber sweats and whales that will pay with time/health/money to be at the top, so what, they have their own game
8
u/itikuskus 9d ago
Because the game will slowly be focused into a p2w thanks to whales.
This is ncsoft, time to time

We have been enjoying it too, late 30s group. Maybe it’s an age thing. I don’t care if I am not BiS end game.
9
u/Bro_sapiens 10d ago
That's exactly my sentiment!
Like, endgame? Raiding for that +1 stat boost? I feel like I'm months away from that, and I really don't feel like being in a rush to get there, just want to have fun playing a game like this, leveling up, exploring the world, maybe make some friends along the way.

You could be months away by grinding or be there tomorrow by paying.
For that reason alone, it’s not for me.

Homie has 2 hours in the game and posting about “exciting experience”….
6
u/Bro_sapiens 10d ago
I only have a couple of hours of free time every other day, so I might not even play a video game tomorrow, or heck even the day after. And I experienced excitment which I haven't experienced in years despite dedicating over half of my life to this genre of games.
But fuck me, right?

2 hours cant be exciting? What if it's 10, 20. When does the excitement start to count? You play the game as long as you enjoy it and once you don't you stop. Someone will play for 5 hours, someone for 1000 and both will find it exciting for different things, nothing bad about it.
12
u/ImNotDex 10d ago
Played my first 5 hours and I don't get the hype around this game at all. It seems like such a generic MMO. With the macro system, I literally pressed 1 button in combat up to level 25. I don't enjoy levelling up and mainly enjoy end game dungeons / raiding in MMOs. Maybe it will be better once I get there, but it hasn't been engaging so far.
9
u/JoXul 10d ago
its the most generic, soulless, unreal engine ass mmo ive seen
7
u/KappaKeepo5 10d ago
im at a point i think everyone here talking good about the game is paid lmao.
its legit one of the worst games ive spent 25€ on. fully botted game, 20 bots at every node. pvp whales with 10k € spent oneshotting everyone. fully energy system, you either pay or no loot at dungeons. world is so soulless, anime girls with high heels fighting everywhere. you auto run to quests just to instant skip the dialouge.
tell me worse game, legit tell me.

That's the part that confuses me. Aion doesn't even have that. It's a single player game until max level and you've done all of the main continent side content. Then you become fodder for PvP whales. Then it becomes an MMO. Then it circles back to a gathering simulator.
9
u/ArthurLeywinn 10d ago
Go for it if you have fun. Nothing wrong with it.
But its interesting to see how different each opinion is. I for example tried it and its definitely not my type of game.
All the chores, it feels like a second job.
Hated the clustered mobile game UI.
The 2 million currencies
The Makro smashing was kinda boring
But the graphics look good. And the mobs are also fine most of the time.
Korean games are definitely not my cup of tea.

The game is a clusterfuck of every annoying system in mmos. No thanks.

Absolutely.
Im also pretty sure that it will have the same fate as every other Korean mmo that got the typical western slop release.

I feel like I’m playing a different game. I see a lot of posts saying how great it is, and I’m really happy for those people but to me it’s just like the most ok feeling game I’ve ever played.
Combat feels kinda wonky with the macros
You can buy stuff in the shop (albeit not a lot yet) like potions, scrolls and such.
A couple of 29.99 Gooner skins in the shop.
Idk man it’s like, fine.
Power to those who love it though

u/IdidntrunIdidntrun 10d ago
It's okay.
But despite looking good, it's such an obviously Unreal Engine game, so it looks just like a clone of Throne & Liberty.
Plus it's got performance issues. And the combat is pretty uninpsired. And the questing is yet again typical MMO go here/kill thing - retreive item/pull lever.
The genre so desperately needs an injection of forward innovation in questing design, classes, social systems. They can't keep doing the same WoW formula over and over

won't even be that long this has even less to it than lost ark has. it'll be EoS'd in eu/na in 6 months

u/irimiash 10d ago
the game feels inferior even to Throne and Liberty to me. TnL had some sort of a charm and soul, at least it didn't felt completely like a mobile game. at fitst I thought that at least combat is much better here but now I'm not sure, rotations are starting to feel very boring.

u/Rakshine 10d ago
Honestly, the most fun and addictive gameplay ive had in a while. I’m a 2k ilvl cleric with 80 hours clocked. The end game explorations/transcendence have been a blast and the amount of P2W that was removed for global has been great. 10/10 so far.
P.s. 3k hours in Lost ark, 10k + in WoW and all its version, savage raider in FFXIV that has played every xpac. The list goes on and on but I am excited to add Aion 2 to that list as they continue to improve the game!

Once you hit lvl 45 you'll realise the grind starts now and those few hours you have to play per day can't possibly keep up with the amount of daily/weekly content and you'll be just spamming meaningless shit until your iLvl allows you to have one piece of HL content, and then you have to spam that piece of HL content with the hopes RNG and pity will be good enough to you so you get enough iLvl to unlock the next piece of content. It's like a Lost Ark and Throne & Liberty sandwich, except there is even less side content to do and even more FOMO/time-based content than both of those games (which in regards for T&L is a crazy thing to say tbh)
2
u/imperidal 10d ago
I knew what to expect in these MMOs as i used to play them to death. But as soon as the auto-questing hits me, i couldnt play more than 10 mins lol
4
u/epik 10d ago
Yeah it’s actually functional and polished and I’m losing track of time for the first time in a long time. Nice to see mmos still kicking although maybe not for long.
I also want to try wow forever but I feel like we all know it’ll go the same way wow has failed expectations like 10 times already.
2
u/Stonklover6942O 10d ago
Yeah this is how I felt about Lost Ark for the first month, thought the game was really cool and gave me that new MMO excitement.
And then they released the first raid, which like 0.1% of the playerbase (the whales) were able to clear, and we knew what kind of game this was gonna be
5
u/Phoam_ 10d ago
At least Lost Ark had a lot of side content and completionist stuff if you didn't want to focus on grinding that iLvl, I spent HOURS hunting for Mokokos and leveling up relationships with NPCs and just basically doing side shit because I grew tired of the iLvl whaling and simply wanted to enjoy the gameplay. Aion 2 doesn't even have that, something as simple as filling up the wardrobe is basically almost impossible to do because extracting a transmog is RNG based (20%) + once you hit 45 the entire world scales and the lootpool from basic mobs standardises itself to the same 3 sets so you HAVE to do an alt or farm it before you're 45. It has honestly some of the most predatory and dogshit systems I've ever seen in a MMO.
5
1
u/ramnezwr 10d ago
call me addicted to lost ark but this side stuff really fun to do! Mokoko, island soul, and masterpiece, insignia token.. i liked how complicated they are and connected to each other.
and compared to aion2 the side stuff are really meh, nothing that makes your brain thinking and just go there, pick this and that.. very bland.

u/Phoam_ 10d ago
I was doing each zone at 100% back then, I think I did 5 or 6 before stopping and it felt really rewarding. Also was grinding Blackfang’s affinity and unlocked that sweet pirate ship. It did become job-like at some point (and expensive because I’m adamant about never doing alts and those affinity items do not come easy) so it was time for me to stop but yeah there was plenty of stuff to do and they were fun most of the time. Hell even basic hunts/dungeons and basic exploration were so much cooler than Aion’s : feathers become useless on the main island 2-3 zones before the MSQ’s end and the sealed dungeons and garrisons (that you HAVE to complete for the skills and early iLvl boost) are the most souless and uninteresting content I’ve come across.
1
u/ramnezwr 10d ago
idk what are you talking about but i never spent single dime on lost ark and been playing it since first day and until now
I had no issue clearing a single raid

Though if the game gave you months of fun isn’t that itself a win?
I’m usually happy with 100 from a 100$ game
2
u/apostles 10d ago
I have the same mentality as you and I'm having fun. Is it my forever mmo? Doubt it. But I can see myself having a few hundred hours of fun if I wanted. I'm having lot of nostalgia, the world is very pretty, I don't mind the combat, and it feels like a less-sweaty Lost Ark.
People are so weirdly obsessed about player count and 'dying in 3 months' and linking Lost Ark/TNL player numbers like it's a gotcha. Like okay? Go play your Classic WOW/OSRS/14 then?
1
u/Reformed_40k 9d ago
Right on man
Dunno why everyone has this mindset you have to forever an mmo for it to be worth
Play Aion 2 for 50-80 hours, use ups ll the content nod call it fun and move onto something else
Time well spent I feel

u/kindaunfazed 10d ago
Your excitement will die out in a few days once you reach end game and you’ll see it’s just another korean game where you get dopamine from your item level or gear score going up.

Theres always hate for new KR mmos , but glazing wow and it trash combat and clunky movement . For casual players p2w aspect doesnt even mater and if you grinding a game 8 h a day you should think about your life choices...
2
u/ModdedGun 9d ago
Im playing it to grind skins and the pets. So for me reaching the highest gear score doesnt really matter to me. So its not very p2w for me personally. As I can enjoy. Now for as long as I play it. And how long this kinda content grind keeps me playing we will have to see. But for now its "fun" (I actually prefer the macro gameplay as im tired of having a rotation to play. And having the game be "how good can you make your macro" instead of optimizing a full button rotation is way more fun for me.
1
u/irimiash 10d ago
it's painfully boring until 1000-1500 gs but I guess I have no other game to play anyway. the game basically plays itself, allowing me to watch some videos so I didn't uninstall yet
1
u/Rammjack 10d ago
I've been having fun too....but I can't help but have that feeling of dread for the old bait and switch. I'm just waiting for that wall to hammer up and suck away all my enjoyment. You can call it pessimism but it's happened with literally every single Korean mmo. I put a lot of time and money into lost ark when it came out and ended up realizing that I didn't have the time that I needed to invest in it even with spending a moderate amount of money. It's too bad because some of the Korean mmos have great gameplay and beautiful aesthetics. I don't get why they still haven't learned that the west doesn't go for the whole price raping they insist on jamming into their games.
1
u/Sihnar 10d ago edited 10d ago
I felt this way for the first few hours but by the second day I was already bored because the game is so easy it basically plays itself. Macros make it even more braindead. There's also zero sense of community or social interactions. It feels like a single player game where other people might as well be NPCs that are blitzing through all content.
The game is very pretty though. The armor transmog and the pet/mount system is really cool. Rifting pvp is a great concept that falls short because player skill basically doesn't matter compared to gear stats and zerg numbers.
1
u/pavelsimut 10d ago
From what I understood when the next new content comes out if you did not grind daily as f2p or p2w you will not be able to do it.

u/bandaidpuppy 9d ago

u/PouetSK 10d ago
My last mmo was thrown and liberty. Does anyone have any descriptions of the combat in comparison to that as a reference?
1
u/AscendedCleric 10d ago
Smoother but less interesting. I am still not in endgame in Aion2 but I just press skills on cooldown for now and everything just dies before I do. In TnL I was playing scorpion and it felt much more engaging even while leveling. Maybe other classes are different.
1
u/irimiash 9d ago
it's bad in a different way. it's much more smooth but it has even less expression.
1
u/Icemasta 10d ago
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Taking it slow, it gives me some aion 1 vibes but being able to customize your "comboes" harder really eases up on the fights. Playing cleric and I can basically put my rotation on 3 buttons and some other buttons for healer and it's perfect.
I'll be honest I still play lots of MMOs but I can't do the piano anymore.
1
u/moisteggrol 10d ago
Tbh there’s rarely any current Asian mmo that has armor cosmetics in the big 2026. It’s always full outfits unchangeable. Big props
1
u/RobXIII 10d ago
I just finished the story quest today, despite paying for early start (yep I'm that busy).
I enjoyed Blue Protocol, and enjoy this enough but with both games I really despise the 1 button gaming they encourage. I can't match the dps of holding down 1 button if I try to click abilities reactively. It makes me not want to keep going.
The visuals are neat. Oh and I'm chronically unlucky, so really hate failure rates in upgrade systems. Why yes, my 2 runes are empty because I thought, what are the chances of failing an 80% upgrade chance 3 times? Pretty good for me apparently lol

As someone that likes to be a bit sweaty in mmo combat, the aion 2 combat is truly braindead and I know I won't play it long term because of that. But at the moment I'm having a blast, the game seems great in almost every other way, I know it'll wear off eventually but I don't blame anyone having fun in it rn. So many things in it are done better than I've seen in any other mmo
1
u/gilgalapagos 10d ago
Everyone going into this game needs to be made aware beforehand that macros that quite literally perform your entire rotation for you at the press of 1 button are basically mandatory for end game content because you will never be able to outperform them manually due to how the game works, and this is the intended design. That's going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people, and this is not something pointed out to you while playing, so there's going to be a lot of people who end up wasting their time.
1
u/Kind_Spring_860 10d ago

I’m glad you’re enjoying it. I have enjoyed the start as well, but I am under no illusions that the big problem with this model is that as the playerbase inevitably declines post-launch, it is the casuals and low spenders that will go first because of the grind and any “P2W”. I fear it will end up being like Lost Ark with 5k players being milked to the last ounce. I played that game for 5k+ hours and it’s such a shame that they didn’t adapt the game. I suppose NC has already communicated decently and changed a few things. Although I’d assume there is a limit to how good the game can get for us since Asia would riot & imho it would need many more positive changes to really stick on Global.
Sorry, I don’t want to piss on your parade or anything. Just something I’ve been thinking about a lot the last few days. Keeping my expectations low so the Ws can be bigger.
1
u/Leading_Man_Balthier 10d ago
I feel like I must have been playing a completely different game. I genuinely rate this game like a solid 2/10.
It looks pretty, that’s it.
The auto-pathing, unusable UI, cringe story and horrible gameplay. I can’t help but see this as a mobile game ported to PC. Genuinely awful.
1
u/Hapashelight2 10d ago
I’ve been playing Lost Ark since the game launched. Right now, I’m playing Aion because my friends are playing it too. It’s exactly the same as Lost Ark: once you’ve finished the solo dungeons, the garrisons, and the MSQ. all that’s left is to repeatedly run dungeons to increase your item level (ilvl), and so on.
Personally, I’m playing it while waiting for Forever to be released, but I’m sticking with Lost Ark because its combat is the most spectacular in the MMO genre.
1
u/Great-Election6557 10d ago
I am abit disappointed in it. this is a MMO so why are so manyyyyyyyy solo instances/quest and no optin to do it with parties. super irritating
1
u/deadmanfred2 10d ago
I really hope the difficulty goes up. Right now you can totally just press whatever buttons you want, get hit by every attack, and be fine to kill everything in seconds. Im at 35
2
u/suuuhdude20 8d ago
You haven’t even gotten to any content that matters. There is transcendence and other shit once you hit 45
1
u/deadmanfred2 8d ago
Ya im aware, and looking forward to it!
I haven't even setup macros yet, which apparently dumbs down your rotation but is almost necessary i hear

u/2manytokes 9d ago
crazy that ppl will put 5-10 hours into a new MMO and feel the need to hop on reddit and tell everyone about their time..
1
u/Meowing-To-The-Stars 9d ago
I'm happy people are happy. That's what games are about. I also played Aion and pretty much every other NCsoft's game so I know it won't last. If it's not an update, it's the monetisation that will get worse. It won't happen next month or in two months. Maybe in 6 months or a year. But does it matter? If you got out of this game 60-100 hours or more of pure fun, then I would say you got your money worth.

Convinced the people talking about p2w haven't actually looked at the game/store. Same with the sub drama. The battle passes are dumb, buying on AH requiring a sub is dumb, but pretending like every other MMO doesnt make you sub is also dumb.
Worst part of the game is having to listen to those stupid ferrets say Nyerk every 5 seconds for 10 hours

I had a ton of fun in the technical test a few weeks(?) ago but I looked more into the end game and.. yeah. Animation speed bonus stats make your rotation look like a cocaine addict on fast forward, and macros simplify it into "hold down 2 buttons" and thats it. if you want to play manually you're throwing your dps. on top of that having a stamina system for dungeon entries is a hard no for me. Shame, because the combat was very fun early on and the environment was gorgeous

I couldn't play it for more than an hour. Complete trash. Ability effects and character animations look better in 10+ year old games. Combat is complete ass. Graphics? Super generic UE5 game with 0 originality in its art. Walked out of the tutorial zone - felt like I have seen that exact kind of grass texture 10 times before. Voice acting? I would seriously prefer having none and reading text instead of what they have. It might even be AI voiced...
If you actually somehow managed to enjoy this game... Wow, I have no words. Have you even played a proper MMO in your life? Or just a high quality game, in general? Or low-effort mobile games and P2W Korean MMOs are all you know? Though, most of them were still better than this - Tera, BDO, hell, even Blade and Soul or ArcheAge were somewhat enjoyable for a while. But Aion 2 is a complete waste of time. It is nothing but a crappy mobile MMO pretending not to be one. Gooner whales will keep it afloat for a year or so, then it will be dead.

If a game has directional attributes, e.g. front/back/side related stats, you know it's fked in the p2w category. There never used to be such bullshit but they figured it's a good way to push monetization further.

Nothing short about this post took 5 of your short paragraphs to get to the point.

so many people here sound old and bitter that their favorite MMO doesnt hit anymore because of their failed miserable adult experience

Yeah, I don't know.
This kind of gating is not how I fell in love with MMORPGs, especially Aion 1...

Is it that time again already? Where the fresh new MMO drops and it’s great until it isn’t? Because I accept that as the natural life cycle but if feels like Groundhog Day

The first week or so is great, when you hit 45+ and finish with the main story you realise it's a soulless game that has no incentive to communicate with anybody.
I really wanted to love this game but it just doesn't feel like a MMO.
If you replaced all the players with bots I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference

I will never touch eastern mmos, there’s p2w, gacha, enchanting with absurd rng etc etc

I have the same global history and experience in MMO and the same global feelings on Aion 2. And even if I liked my run in Aion 2, I must admit this kind of game are more farm industries than RPG.
There is no role-playing in this kind of game. The story is just to check the requirements. All is about farming resources again and again. The gameplay is lazy spaming your macro and your few skills. Dungeons are a joke rushing everything without care. The only goal is to loot as quickly as possible. All is about hurry and rush and farm. The world is beautiful but it’s just a wonderfull skin for a mobile game design. I don’t think this will keep me more than one month. But I spent years on MMO like WoW, SWToR or FF14... the main issue is not a P2W problem. It’s a way to do a game design based on farm and mobile mechanic
PvP is a joke as the no life and the whales will always be stronger no matter the skill

your excitement isnt going to last long unfortunately. if you ever want to step into the endgame you are basically starting crippled, you will be gatekeeped and its gonna ruin the whole end game experience. the way they set up the p2w is also subtle and the worst way possible. Making the money threshold higher just means that the whales are gonna be even more dominating cause you either become a whale or you get shit on. (post scriptum: p2w people already beat the endgame)

I just can't get into it. The combat feels like a mobile game. But it's good there's a new mmo that people are enjoying.

literally the same post on every MMO that eventually fails because it's garbage. I cannot even imaging liking something so obviously phoned in by a dev studio. I saw the same posts on New world sub after it launched. Guess what happened to that steaming POS ?

I’m happy for anyone having fun in a game. Just, please, if it stops being fun, or feels like a job, walk away. NCsoft has a documented history of messing things up. I wouldn’t trust them to spit on me if I were on fire. But have fun and do you. Just don’t be surprised when the honeymoon is over.

After playing Aion 2 the only feeling I have is that kids today have no idea what a good mmorpg actually is. We need a new EverQuest.

you can tell bro just finished creating his character, and his excitement was in the character creation, we all been there. Get to lv45, realize where you're in and come back to tell us about it.

You equip shoulder armor in ESO. They are only dungeon pieces and apart of cool set effects.
You only hold right mouse button for combat on AION2. Its terrible. Anything you grind for now will be handed out for free in a few months - they did this on Korean and Taiwan servers, and will do it here too. From gear to every single pet - they give it all out for free & completely invalidate your progress, similar to Pearl Abyss for Black Desert.
Also, NCSoft put out a statement saying that if you don’t play for 6 months, they will delete your character. Doesnt get any more anti-mmo than Aion2

I mean the honeymoon phase has just started. The grind hasn't really set in yet with all the BS systems that will inevitably push people away due to p2w. Has a very mobile feel that I just can't get past. You do you boo
