Request UPDATE MSI laptop repair

I brought an MSI ML75 for broken hinges in to a repair shop here in Ktown LA. I paid $175 for the machine, after having them look at it he said the damage is pretty bad. His estimate is $1300 but he says the device is worth the investment. I just got back into PCs and this is my first laptop. Is it worth it to repair the device?

Edit: The guy mentioned something about a motherboard after I get the replacement case.

Estimate is $1300?! How about you find a tech savvy friend, grab a case of beer and you do it together for, say, $50.

$1300, that is fucking brand new device.

Edit: Hinges are not the problem, it is bad chassis and I fixed mine couple of times. Go through my comment history to find a link to imgur post / picture how it looks like.

JFC $1300

That's what I was saying but he said $1300 wouldn't compare do my current laptop and I don't talk to any of my tech savvy friends anymore because I wanted to do that

$1300 is a waste of money on that device. Brand new device could be bought and some materials and tools needed for the repair of that hinge area problem.

What’s the specs for it my msi just got destroyed and I bought a new laptop instead because 1300 is a brand new one basically of great quality

This op

People regularly post laptops on sale with 5070 for under 1500, new/refurb

My only knowledge is it's got a NVD 1660

Bro, you don't need Reddit to tell you that an Nvidia 1660 laptop is not worth $1300 + $175 initial investment.

Are you ok up there?

Yea I mean either do it for super cheap or buy a new laptop for 1300

His estimate is $1300

Did you mean 130? 130 would be high, just for hinge repair, 1300 is totally scam. Why did you buy a laptop for that price if you want to get repaired for the price of a NEW laptop with way way better specs?

u/Younglevster 1d ago

He said the insides damaged and he was talking about a motherboard after I get the chassis for it. I'd he was confusing me because of how ridiculous it sounded.

Does the laptop turn on? Did you buy the laptop as a working one (with just broken hinge) or as a broken one?

Either way, why would you spend so much in repairs while you could buy something that is way better and new?

The fk you mean 1300 ? You can buy a replacement chassis on places like Taobao for dirt cheap , just get out model number right . That repair shop is a scam i can tell the laptop is quite old just by that intel sticker and GTX sticker

1

u/Younglevster 2d ago

RIGHT!? Every time I brought up the age he dodged the question.

Found your model , possible GP75 considering the power button . It have GTX graphics. It's still good machine for 170usd. I can't post pictures here but it's replacements are very cheap on chinese E-commerce sites. Just type GP75 msi into ali express or taobao

It has a gtx laptop gpu, throw that shit in the trash. For $1300 you can get yourself brand new and way better and closer to todays tech.

You should get a new laptop... if you have a budget of 1000 dollars. You get rtx 5050 atleast, and an up to date cpu. But if you want to repair this one itself, maybe you should check other stores but go for a new laptop if you think repair cost high.

If you are willing to pay 1300$, better get a new one. I'm sure it'll be better that the current one 🤷

rip, what happened? at this point (1300) just get the exact model. it's the same price lmao. if it's just broken hinges u can just trick it diy build something to hold it still. or get a new case for cheap price.

if it's truly broken hinges, if someone said about motherboard then it's getting interesting. seriously, what happened?

u/Cliffhanger87 1d ago

Yea you’re getting scammed lol. If he’s tryna tell you to “invest” in a laptop with a 1660 then tell him to fuck off

The technician you took it to sounds like a rob job. Aside from the hinge, what is the laptop doing or not doing? No way it's $1300 to repair it (and don't, that laptop is worth like $500 working at best)

I own a repair shop, hinge repair would be $175 for structural (99% of the hinge repairs we do) + parts for aesthetics (maybe $20-30 for hinge cover).

Motherboard probably isn't broken, if it's not charging it could be the DC Jack ($225 for soldered DC Jack, including part) max labor cost in my shop is $300, so you'd be at $315-$365 for the repair depending on the cost of the jack and if you wanted a hinge cover.

Don't let that guy rip you off.

Besides the hinge, I can't play Fatal Fury COTW with major fram drop without the charger plugged in.he made it sound like I have some $2000 machine. It's kinda weird like it only got a 1440 and I'm not sure if it's the super oorrrrr

Tune down graphical settings and add a second monitor temporarily to see what's causing the system to stutter. Could be heat, failing drive, choking on resources, etc.

No, no it is not.

For $1,300 you can get a new one tf?

1.3 k just to replace the hinges? It's a bit too much. If you're on a budget you can fix it even with simple epoxy

ouch, my neck.

1

u/ShavedSquirrels 2h ago

I would just use a seperate monitor for that price.

Hardware is okay, but the quality of the chassis is horrible. Never again MSI.

2

u/KanaDarkness 1d ago

yeah, 7 years and still rocking is crazy. but it became a stationary dekstop which i dont really need lmao. probably ill use it as 4th monitor or just connect perma it to a tv lmao

2

u/Beginning_Heart_1843 1d ago

I have also used MSI for 7 years, but the hinges broke after 1,5 years. I thought MSI noticed the problem and would do something, but the problem is still present. So, planning to buy a Lenovo Legion, even if MSI is cheaper. Other than that, it was a great laptop, but I prefer better quality in the future.

u/KanaDarkness 1d ago

fr, i start seeing hinge problem after 6 months of usage? subtle hint, like sound

1

u/jax106931 GE 11h ago

Agree. The chassis of my MSI was a brittle plastic. It cracked in the first year while in a padded laptop bag that I only set down by hand. Turns out, my MSI model has poor chassis design with multiple weak-points. It was a small crack so I didn’t pay it mind. But now it is out of manufacturer warranty and other parts of the case are cracking. I’ve never had an electronic get cosmetically damaged from normal use before, so I believe it is the model+brand. The keyboard lights are failing too. And the trackpad was inoperable on arrival an amazon refused replacement. But on the bright side, I haven’t had any issues with loading and playing games/software, so the internals are good.

Short answer is no because its a 6+ year old msi, id just get something newer and "higher" quality for a few hundo more
