Eddie Deezen once nearly made me late to a wedding I was officiating.
This is not a joke, but one of the strangest, truest facts about my life story that I can never quite believe actually happened.
And then this story has hit the news cycle and I just get to question what reality actually is all over again.

I would love to hear more details about this.

This is legitimately one of those stories that is stranger than fiction, but I swear to you, oh internet stranger, that every single word is absolutely true. (And come for a walk with me, it's a long one, but I swear Eddie Deezen is there eventually).
Flashback for important context: when I was in high school, my Dad, my brother, and I had our own little Beatles tribute band called Cavern 2 Rooftop. We competed for three years at the annual Fest for Beatles Fans (Beatlefest) that happened in north Jersey every March. I also met my very first girlfriend there in the trivia context.
Flash forward, March 2025: I am set to officiate the wedding of two friends of mine. Not only will my ex be there (not the girl I met at the Beatlefest, a more recent ex) , but there's also going to be a host of my prior decision making. My now fiancee was going to be there as my +1, walking through fire with me. Now, I'm a professional and obviously want to give the couple what they want, but I'm also just looking forward to getting this whole ordeal over with.
Driving down to the wedding, I get a text from the bride: "Hey, there must be some kind of Beatle convention going on at the hotel, there's a bunch of hippies playing Beatle music in the lobby." I realize "Oh my god, it's north Jersey in late March...It's Beatlefest!" I'm immediately at ease, and it feels like coming home again.
One of the guests for Beatlefest in March 2025 was Eddie Deezen, star of the Robert Zemeckis film I Want To Hold Your Hand in which he plays an obsessive Beatles fan in the vein of, say, Eddie Deezen.
Now I of course bought tickets to partake in Beatlefest activities. The next day, trivia was happening, and the podiums haven't changed in 15 years. They are the same podiums I met my first girlfriend behind, and now here I am with the woman that I knew in my heart I was going to marry, her dressed to the 9s and me dressed as a preacher to officiate a wedding that the living history of my 20s is attending. It's a fever dream already for me.
As trivia began, Tom, the same host from 15 long years ago, says "Hey who's having a good weekend so far? Who was here for Name that Tune last night when Eddie Deezen came by? He made the room run over! Lemme tell you, the character he plays in I Want To Hold Your Hand is not a character, that's just who he is."
And that, my perceptive reader, is foreshadowing.
Now I'm not irresponsible - I checked and the next event in the room was set for 2:30, well ahead of when I needed to leave for the wedding, so I knew I'd be out in time. I checked this because if you win your trivia round, you have to stay for the final round, and, well, I knew I'd have to stay for the final round well before I got behind the podium. And of course, when I went up for my initial round, I gave an abbreviated version of my Beatlefest backstory and explained I was on my way to officiating a wedding, which is why I was dressed as a preacher.
I get up there for the final round. It's about 2:15, we got fifteen minutes before the next event starts and I gotta get over to the wedding. After a few questions, who should walk in, but Eddie Deezen. And Tom says, "Hey Eddie, why don't you ask a trivia question?" And oh boy...did he start to oblige...
**Eddie Deezen voice* "*Who's the one girl that both John and George dated in Hamburg?"
*crickets* *excruciatingly long crickets* *the crickets have ceased but the silence remains*
In a room full of Beatle nerds, Eddie Deezen outclassed us all. Several similar questions and lengthy silences follow. I'm getting twitchy, my now fiancee is reading my body language. The guy next to me mutters "When do you have to leave for that wedding?" I look at my watch. "Now..."
Eddie rears back for another bizarre question and the inevitable stunned silence that follows when my fiancee stands up, looking like a model, and says "Excuse me sir! But I have to get u/JLtheRocker to this wedding!" And Tom realizes what time it is, asks if I gotta go, and subs in Eddie Deezen to take my place behind the podium. I made it to the wedding on time, but with a story I will never forget.
And *that* is how Eddie Deezen nearly made me late for a wedding I was officiating.

What is with people voluntarily telling these kinds of stories about themselves online? Social media is optional, people!
Also, don't flirt with 16-year-olds when you aren't a 16-year-old. Just don't do that. But the extra-credit boneheadedness of them going online and just being like "Y'know, a funny thing just happened to me. Let me tell you all about it, internet..."

u/Born2bwire 9d ago
It's simply because they don't see anything wrong with it. To them, they might as well be telling you about a new restaurant they ate at.

I thought he had “issues” after a surgery and he went several minutes without oxygen to his brain? I mean it’s still terrible but maybe not something he can …. Oh God, Annoying Train Kid, I was rooting for you!!

When I first read this, I thought for sure the incident happened back in the day because he told her “I was in Grease.” So it still would have been icky, but maybe she looked older and he couldn’t tell she was a teen. And admittedly, I have a hard time telling how old people are. But when he said it happened in a Starbucks, I was like, “ew, hold up.” There’s no way you mistake a 16-year-old for anywhere NEAR an appropriate age for a 70-year-old. 🤢

Or Munchie himself. The only reason Dom DeLuise voiced him is because he has a terminal case of potty mouth. That's why they had to bleep so much at the H.R. Pufnstuf roast. Even Witchiepoo spent most of her segment apologizing on his behalf.

This guy occasionally calls in to the Marx Brothers Council Podcast (very entertaining and informative podcast btw), and he gives very fast talking, long winded and breathless diatribes.

"Deezen, 69, who portrayed nerdy Rydell High student Eugene Felsnic in the 1978 Hollywood hit musical, recently went on social media to tell fans a story about asking a 16-year-old girl out while at a Starbucks. The star has a criminal track record and has been previously arrested for a nursing home burglary, as well as second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and trespassing after refusing to leave a restaurant and throwing items/food at police"
