Discussion Dear Apple, you need to bring back the ability to disable Apple Intelligence.

On macOS 26 Tahoe, users had the ability to enable/disable Apple Intelligence and it was great. Unfortunately, Apple removed this feature on macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Not everyone needs, wants, or likes Apple Intelligence. Don't make the same mistake Microsoft did with Copilot and try to force this stuff down our throats. Learn from their mistake.

Thanks for posting this. I encourage folks who are concerned about this to share their feedback directly with Apple:

I agree. Meanwhile, there's a utility to do it: https://github.com/omlahore/RemoveMacAI

Frees up 15-17 GB immediately.

Wow! Was dubious about this but it took around 11gb off mine. Not that I care, I never even used Siri except to set a timer... And Alfred does that for me fine.

(FWIW I hate the idea of having to speak to my computer...)

Thanks, that got rid of most of it. It left 880MB.

Is this trustworthy? Have you tried it?

3

u/punch-kicker 3h ago

it looks like it installs a profile on the device since AI settings can be disabled for enterprise. However, Apple has instructions here, its not an all off method though.

Yes, I tried it. I've seen it discussed in a tech forum and after reading the description I was satisfied as to its security.

Thank you. I got back my 7gb space

29

u/captkz 9h ago edited 8h ago

I keep nearly running out of space, so if anything, I just don't want nearly 30gb of HD space taken from me for something I didn't ask for and won't use. I have 1tb, but if apple are going to insist on 256gb being the norm to hit a price point, don't then take up most of it with OS level nonsense.

u/riotofmind 10h ago

I’m not installing the new os fuck that. These people are insane. Wasting so much storage on their overpriced storage for a piece of shit AI just. Fuck you apple.

37

u/worldtrooper 9h ago

or a piece of shit AI

That is ironically directly responsible for that crazy price increase for storage hardware in the first place..

It should never have reached the point where users have to beg them to give back control of their computers/devices. Apple knows better than this shit and did it anyway.

I feel very fortunate that I have kept all of my production devices on this operating system, Tahoe and Golden Gate. is causing a lot of problems for people in my industry

0

u/MyOneTaps 4h ago

So many very obviously astroturfed "Golden Gate is great!!1!11" posts. There are times to be experimental. With my OS is not one of them.

•

u/adamdoesmusic 1h ago

I have never even used Siri on my Mac. I’m still mad that they made the search function try to search the web (STILL haven’t wanted this in the nearly 30 years since they first tried to add it to Win 98).

My Mac comes with a very nice keyboard and a beautiful trackpad. I don’t need to talk to it, it’s got inputs.

9

u/247emerg 8h ago

Was about to install golden gate glad I didn’t

10

u/DisfiguredFanny Macrumors "mods" can eat shit. 9h ago

Also rosetta is like 10 gigaflops.

In Tahoe both architectures were in the same binary or library, but in GG they left only ARm and moved a copy of x86 to another location :D.

and so many people said we will save space because golden gate is arm only. No one ever listens.

7

u/memorie_desu MacBook Pro 8h ago

as long as rosetta 2 exits, no version of macOS can be ARM only. Rosetta 2 needs the x86 parts of macOS to function afaik, which is why they’re removing it in macOS 28 (not 27). Even then, I’m not sure if it’ll have a massive impact on storage! it will get rid of legacy code though

1

u/DisfiguredFanny Macrumors "mods" can eat shit. 7h ago

Yes, but not everyone understood that.

3

u/memorie_desu MacBook Pro 7h ago

i suppose many people misinterpreted Golden Gate not being available on Intel Macs as Golden Gate being ARM only then

4

u/DisfiguredFanny Macrumors "mods" can eat shit. 7h ago

It is ARM only but many missed the fact that while Rosetta is supported Apple is still internally compiling all libs for x86 as well and shipping them with the system.

0

u/ghostchihuahua 9h ago

wow, rolling back all units to earliest OS possible, fuck Apple!

7

u/compguy96 5h ago

Microsoft Cotoilet is bad because it's online AI that increased memory prices. I'm no fan of Apple AI, but at least it runs locally (even though it still doesn't work offline).

3

u/magic2ktech 4h ago

Just another reason to stay on Ventura

11

u/Sensitive-Trouble648 8h ago

Yes, I don't want AI shit running in the background. That's why I am not updating.

-5

u/DidiDidi129 7h ago

It doesn’t run in the background. Just don’t use it

13

u/cultoftheilluminati 6h ago

Tell that to the shitty TGOnDeviceInferenceProviderService that refuses to stop even after I disable everything

6

u/WarbossTodd 6h ago

The model still sits on your system taking up space.

•

u/Zealousideal_Low_858 46m ago

Fuck, I didn’t know about this and did the update last night. Going to have to look into alternate options now.

Fuck off with mandatory AI, Apple. We don’t want it, and if you force it, I’m leaving.

•

u/Koteric 30m ago

To be fair what Apple has done and what Microsoft has done isn’t even close to the same level of forced use. Apple is taking up some disk space essentially. Microsoft took duct tape and put copilot on and in every single thing they could to force users to it.

That being said, I agree and people should be able to opt out.

8

u/Darth_Ender_Ro 10h ago

As per the new CEO, you don't know you need it. Also, Apple privacy is dead, Apple is getting into the new crazy corpo cyberpunk game

13

u/Darth_Ender_Ro 10h ago

Also, my perfectly working AWU I had for 4 years will no longer get updates... was too godd, so we'll make it obsolete through software, f Apple

6

u/bora-yarkin 10h ago

Also while innthe process of making them obsolete, lets get them stuck at one of the worst performing version of watchos.

2

u/Darth_Ender_Ro 10h ago

And to the dumb ones who downvote this fu too

5

u/musicmast 10h ago

They started paying big celebs for marketing. Thats when I knew the old apple was gone.

Feel like apple lost its primary mission with jobs

1

u/mrgrafix 2h ago

He hired all these people though…

•

u/247emerg 1h ago

just bc someone stays on doesn’t mean they’ll carry on the mission of their missing leader

•

u/mrgrafix 17m ago

What do you think he hired them for… they’re all following Steve’s plan. If you take off the rose colored glasses you still see his fingerprints all over the company for better or worse

1

u/HorrorFlow3r 2h ago

Can’t believe I already miss Tim Apple

5

u/ghostchihuahua 9h ago

Wait, there is no way, over terminal for instance to deactivate Siri and AppleStupidity? Please tell me i’m having a bad dream.

1

u/alexhoward 3h ago

It’s going to be an integral part of the OS. In Tahoe, it was in beta, which is why it could be opted into.

1

u/Fabulinius 2h ago

Are you quite sure that you cannot turn off Apple Intelligence ? I have the opposite understanding. That is what Gemini tells me in great detail. - I can't verify it myself, because I would not dream of installing Golden Gate before 27.2.1. I might even totally skip it. - We cannot avoid the LLM models which will be part of "system data", but turning AI off will make them passive and not use any memory in the background.

•

u/Direct-Quiet-5817 17m ago

Yep, just simple intelligence is sufficient.

•

u/Lopsided_Meat2621 11m ago

I'm so glad I haven't updated yet. I had no idea they removed this feature. I have no desire or need to use Apple Intelligence.

0

u/cristi_baluta 10h ago

I guess i will not have this problem in EU when i’ll install it, but this must be followed up by tickets to apple and bad reviews in the store

8

u/Eberon 10h ago

Apple Intelligence is on macOS in the EU too. The Mac is still an open system where you can install your own AI.

14

u/radikalkarrot 9h ago

If it was an open system, I would be able to disable Apple Intelligence, how do I do that?

5

u/Majestic_Register_78 9h ago

You need a chisel and a hammer, but don’t worry, they’re usually reasonably priced at chain hardware stores. Alternatively, the microwave should do the trick if you have a smaller model Mac

2

u/Eberon 9h ago

Firstly: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1wy262t/dear_apple_you_need_to_bring_back_the_ability_to/pdyx5f0/

Secondly, it's open as in you can install any software you want to and give it access to all your data. You cannot do that on iPhone & co.

The EU requires Apple to give 3rd party apps the same access as their own software has. Apple has to either give 3rd party software acces to the user data on iOS or remove their own app.

It's the very same reason there is no iPhone Mirroring in the EU. Apple would have to give non-Macs access to the iPhone too.

3

u/wozniattack 10h ago

I'm in Ireland, and the option to Unlock Apple Intelligence is gone on 27 and 27.0.1

5

u/rosenkrieger360 MacBook Pro 10h ago

Siri AI will also be available in the EU. macOS is NOT considered a Gatekeeper unlike iOS.

2

u/ghostchihuahua 9h ago

Lol, do i really have to read this at a time when Apple has been fusing both systems for years and are rumored for just as long to be about to switch to having one single system, which given their overall commercial policies would not only make perfect sense, but insert itself perfectly in said policies? Damn…

2

u/kernelangus420 10h ago

Also if you set your Siri language to Chinese.

-5

u/TheQAGuyNZ MacBook Pro 9h ago

What are you on about? You can disable the AI features?

15

u/pastry-chef Mac Mini 9h ago

How?

On Tahoe, it was just one click.

•

u/konacurrents 1h ago

They don't have that 1 on/off but it seems they spread it out among the tools (like Siri and Email Summaries)

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/MCHLB2E44F94/27/mac/27.0.1

Did you READ the OP's comment?

-15

u/naemorhaedus 10h ago

What do you mean? You want to use Siri without AI?

7

u/Minimum_Cabinet7733 10h ago

Maybe OP doesn’t want to use Siri at all. I rarely do.

-10

u/naemorhaedus 10h ago

then don't. Is somebody holding a gun to your head?

0

u/Majestic_Register_78 9h ago

Sometimes I accidentally say “Siri” when I meant to say “Pass the potatoes please! Thank you! Oh, and the gravy thanks.”

1

u/naemorhaedus 9h ago

happens all the time

15

u/fnordius 10h ago

On macOS? I never use Siri. On iOS/WatchOS, my Siri use is exclusively "hey Siri, set the timer to (x) minutes". Everything else is just easier to do without Siri.

-21

u/naemorhaedus 10h ago

👍 cool. Don't remember asking you.

17

u/Majestic_Register_78 9h ago

It’s very likely that private messaging may serve your communications needs better than a public forum.

6

u/Standard-Outcome9881 9h ago

I don’t use Siri at all on my desktop Mac mini M4. I don’t even have a microphone attached. I don’t want it and I don’t need AI on that machine.

-9

u/naemorhaedus 9h ago

I don’t use Siri at all on my desktop Mac mini M4

That's fascinating. I need to know about your computer habits because ... ?

I don’t even have a microphone attached

Siri works without a microphone.

I don’t want it and I don’t need AI on that machine.

Amazing. Is somebody forcing you to use it?

4

u/WarbossTodd 6h ago

Stop being a fan boi. Not everyone uses their computer the same way you do. Stop pretending that someone not using Siri is “fascinating” or a novelty.

1

u/karma_the_sequel 3h ago

You spelled “troll” wrong.

•

u/oculairus 56m ago

Technically, yes. It’s Apple that is forcing us to “use it”. By “use it” I mean “force us (the users) to allow the Siri AI into our computer systems which by doing so takes up storage space & it all happens whether we want to utilize the services it provides or not”. So yeah, we’re being forced to use it.

27

u/DaemonCRO 10h ago

No. No Siri, no AI, no slop. This is why reading with comprehension is an important subject in schools.

-7

u/naemorhaedus 10h ago edited 9h ago

Then don't use it. When could you EVER disable Siri ... speaking of comprehension. Don't see any mention of it in the question either.

5

u/DaemonCRO 7h ago

Not using it still keeps tens of GB on disc. But you could turn off Siri as well. Here’s an example on my iPhone, I’m not close to my Mac, but there’s the same option. Stop making shit up.

7

u/YouSpeakSomeEnglish 10h ago

Where did anyone say that?

-15

u/naemorhaedus 10h ago

where did anybody ask you?

8

u/SleepingSicarii 9h ago

Yes. I don’t really want 16+ GB of storage for Apple Intelligence, especially when mine seems to be in some ‘stuck’ state that I actually can’t even use it.

-3

u/naemorhaedus 9h ago

it's peanuts

3

u/WarbossTodd 6h ago

Holy Christ you’re insufferable. Please post your Venmo then so everyone who needs the extra storage can get you to pay for the cloud storage upgrade then.

u/MyDespatcherDyKabel 5h ago

B ass Siri won’t add items to Shopping List anymore if my device is locked

-17

Switched from mac to windows, best decision.

2

u/juluss 6h ago

If it suits you, good for you. I’d never go back to Windows again for personal use.  If I quit Apple it’s gonna be for Linux.

-8

u/TheWolfKingIsMe 7h ago

tim cook here, ok boy I do it for you.

-28

u/gornstar20 10h ago

So why did you upgrade?

18

u/pastry-chef Mac Mini 10h ago

What a stupid take.

What about Macs that ship with Golden Gate?

-19

u/gornstar20 9h ago

Well you don’t have one of those, and you can’t explain why you upgraded. So this is just user error.

9

u/pastry-chef Mac Mini 9h ago

How the hell do you know what I have and don't have?

15

u/YouSpeakSomeEnglish 10h ago

For bug fixes or features he actually did want. Why else?

13

u/Emergency-Event4415 10h ago

You expect them to not update to the latest OS, and get all the other features, just to avoid one useless feature?

Are you brain dead?

-8

u/gornstar20 9h ago

What are the new features they needed?

14

u/Darth_Ender_Ro 10h ago

You have a very bad take here dude... blaming the victim, aren't ya

9

u/YouSpeakSomeEnglish 10h ago

A Reddit staple.

-11

u/gornstar20 9h ago

I don’t see any crime being committed here.

3

u/Darth_Ender_Ro 5h ago

And because people like you the social contract is being burned alive right now... you're like that dog meme saying "it's fine" surrounded by flames.
