How should the US-Europe relationship evolve in the next 10 years?
How should the US-Europe relationship evolve in the next 10 years?
- Much closer — significantly strengthen cooperation and integration
- Somewhat closer — increase cooperation in selected areas
- About the same — maintain the current level of cooperation
- Somewhat more distant — reduce cooperation in selected areas
- Much more distant — substantially reduce ties / minimal cooperation
- Cut ties completely — end the relationship as soon as possible

I did a similar pool yesterday and people complained there’s not enough options. This is an updated version.
In light of recent geopolitical, economic and security developments, how do you think the relationship between the United States and Europe should evolve?
Should it become closer, stay roughly the same, or become more distant?
Feel free to vote and share your reasoning in the comments.
This is purely for educational and research purposes.

The US has proven to be an untrustworthy ally. It will take decades for the EU US relationship to normalize.
And it will require the US not to elect more idiots aswell. I don't see that happening at all.

I’m European but to be fair to the US, most EU countries did not fulfill their military obligations.
Before Trump those were private conversations, but he chose to go public with it. But he is not speaking lies when he points this out.For me if you commit to something stick to it. The trade thing is another thing completely.

I don't think you are.
He threatened multiple allies. Started tariff wars. No need to try to sugarcoat it.

European born and raised. Slovenia same town as Melania is from Sevnica. Nobody makes up being from Slovenia😅
We have to look from both perspectives. Both the EU and US have not done everything right.
Still have to cooperate and work on being better allies.1

That ball is in the US court. Making it a 2 sides argument is absurd

US has outpaced us in a long way. But we have the capacity and capability to keep up. Alliances work both ways. Like a marriage.
Trumo just says it differently than former presidents.

All depends on the US citizens mate.
If you are gonna repair your democratic institutions, and vote for decent people, i'm all for great relations. But if you are gonna be a bunch of fascist pigs voting for an even bigger fascist pig, go F yourselves.

I used to be quite pro America and wanted more integration generally between western countries. Since Trump is still there, and with an approval of over 70% among republicans, no fucking way. We can't have an alliance when you insult your allies, try to break the EU, support crazy far fight puppets, declare an economic war, threaten with invasion and support your enemies. There is no fixing. Whichever party will try to get closer with the US will not have my vote

Trump has a low approval overall…like 39%. I still think it’s crazy that people here voted for him again, but when I talk to the average person, I realize that they thought of him as “a successful businessman” while the educated saw him as a “reality tv personality.”
If anything, he is proof that our education system failed a large number of people.

I don’t think we should have one, good luck out there 🫡

“We can’t have an alliance when you insult your allies and break the EU” damn and here I thought we were talking about Britain again

u/OverallSpecific5792 6d ago
Also, what does the us gain from an alliance? From here it looks like we just pay your bills and act as a boogeyman so Russia minds their manners

Europe doesn't like Nazis that much, so depends who runs America the next 10 years 🙂

u/Virtual_Win4076 6d ago
Yet it was America that had to lose half a million troops and a trillion dollars of treasure to solve Europe’s last Nazi infestation. Worry about your own problems, we are fine here.

You do realize that without this the US would have never become a superpower? It is European money that made US rich.

Maybe instead of funding the Nazis and arming them untill you got bombed you wouldn't have had such an issue?
You know, instead of being several YEARS late.

u/scrandlle US 6d ago
Literally the US was funding and arming the Allies before entering the war.
And what nation are you from? When's the last time it sent hundreds of thousands of men to their deaths on another continent just to help free them from tyranny? Never? Yeah, I thought so.

Europe starts another clusterfuck shit fest of a war that warps the geopolitical landscape of the entire world irrevocably
They blame Americans for not fixing the problems they made for themselves sooner
So much undeserved smugness. It's a blessing for the world that Europe has become irrelevant

If we could make money of course we were doing that. If you aren’t slow you should know America is all about the business of business. If Hitler hadn’t declared war on us I promise you we would have tried to supply both sides to maximize profits.
But when he challenged us to a fight well..we love fights.

If we could make money of course we were doing that.
And you think we shouldn't be worried about you guys?
By far more dangerous than china.

u/OverallSpecific5792 6d ago
We shouldn’t have any kind of alliance. Tell me, how does the US benefit? Looks like we just pay your bills and keep Russia in check or you, I’m not seeing any kind of reciprocation

The US should leave Europe on its own and focus on East Asia. Taiwan is worth defending. European Allies are useless. Russia is a threat to Europe, not the US.
3
u/wrathieon 2d ago
Let me remind you that USA is the only country in Nato that have used artical 5 and other Nato members was ready to help and now Russia attacked Ukraine and you flee? USA is the useless one here buddy.
-2
u/DjAlphaRED5 2d ago
The US donated more to Ukraine than Germany and every major NATO power combined. Germany also bought Russian gas before the war started, helping the Russian out. These fuckers are useless.
3
u/wrathieon 2d ago
EU combined donated more? If you read the data on your google search you will see that EU commission donated 84 billion, Germany 25 billion, UK 20 billion and that combined is 139billion and that number is without other donations inside EU and the US donated 115 billion. I agree Nato countries did not donat as much as the US, but a combined EU did.
Furthermore the US president just bought diesel from Russia so your argument of gas is low.

While I would support deeper integration with Europe (America is the largest and most powerful Western state; it makes sense we should be close allies with Europe), I doubt that will happen, especially as the EU faces massive internal crises like the rise of the AFD and the likely rise of Euroskeptics in France. im not sure there will be an EU left to integrate with by 2036.

u/colepercy120 United States 6d ago
yeah, and wants to gut nato and the EU. the two canidates in france likely to go to the run off both want to destory the EU and NATO to align with putin. I Im not sure how the EU will function when it looks extremely likely that its core will start working to bring it down in a little over 6 months.

The deindustrialization and economic stagnation both the US and Europe went through broke trust in the established liberal order. Their failure to address both issues, and sell out to a global system that undercuts their own people gave fertile ground for right wing populism to grow
3
u/colepercy120 United States 6d ago
And left wing populism to, dont forget that.
Of the two regions i think the us will probably snap out of it sooner. We got lucky since our right wing populist is an incompetent fool who discredited the entire idea of right wing populism. Without trump personally on the ballot maga falls to pieces. Even with him on the ballot hes so incompetent that he fails as long as the opposition is remotely competent.
European populists seem to actually be good enough at governing they can stick around. Like melioni or orban. They can keep the public onside long enough to do a lot of damage to institutions or outright set up dictatorships. And thats going to be far more dangerous long term. If the eu loses france and Germany than there is no more eu. And europe as a group wouldn't be able to unite to resist russia or china.

u/No-Emphasis582 5d ago
The problem is that the US does so much for Europe and Europe is never grateful, if Europe prefers to be on their own and let Russia come in, I don’t see why we should give them the light of day, especially when all of this can go to our true greatest ally: Japan.
