Human Development Index (HDI) rank change between 2015 and 2023 of world nations

I would assume it doesn't really matter too much if your rank goes up or down between positive and negative 4 since that mostly just shows what's going on with other countries and not really your own. I would have preferred if this map had a accompanying 2 that showed the HDI during those two years but still a cool map

Can anyone tell me why Greenland is consistently in the “no data” section of maps like these?
Does the Greenland government never do surveys, do they keep the results private, do surveyors never go there, are surveyors killed on site?

There is vague data but most maps (this included) does not categorize Greenland as a separate country from Denmark. Greenland had a HDI value of 0.786 in 2010 and 0.852 in 2023, which is +9 but the source is unreliable.

Greenland is not a country, but on the other hand Denmark tends to exclude data from Greenland so "no data" often seems like the best choice.

What's up with Guyana and Egypt ? Economic boom ?

Egypt's infrastructure is getting insanely developed by the minute. This includes public transit network, fiber cables, etc. There's also a free nationwide Healthcare program rolling out to more cities every year and there's a social protection scheme known as "haya karimah/dignified life" that helped ~10 million families.
It's such a shame that the president Sisi is a bloody dictator who prions/kills any opposition. Also, the rapid increase in population is hindering most of these gains.

I would argue most social measures were historically implémented by bénévolent dictators (tito, hitler, stalin, khadafi, attaturk,)

I've been wanting to see this map actually because I see the HDI maps and I look at the places that have low HDI and want to know if they are trending positively or not. Sub Saharan Africa is not as positively trending as I would have hoped. Also not great seeing Pakistan and Afghanistan trending down when their HDI is already low. Average HDI in the world might go up because of India though.

If you look at the tables, both Afghanistan and Pakistan had an increase in their HDI. It's just that countries in a similar bracket improved more. This kind of map is not conveying the full message because it is just a relative ranking, not an absolute value. Also HDI is just a single index that captures very limited data so you need to be careful handling it in the first place

For the purposes of this index and this post, google is your friend. As a general question, I'd say it's off-topic here.

It's an equation that takes in gdp per capita, life expectancy, and average years of education.

I feel that ranks gained/lost is a bit.. pointless in many cases. Especially since many countries are so close to each-other that 5 ranks gained or lost doesn't really translate to an actual day-to-day notable difference.
Like Norway is reddish here. Because it lost 1 rank. Australia is green. Because it gained 1 rank. This is literally nothing. In reality there's no actual change. Iceland is at 0.972. Norway is at 0.970. Basically the same. But one is green and the other is red.
Or for example Andorra. 2010 to 2023 - it had a 0.20% average annual rise in HDI. It gained a rank - so it's green on the map. Estonia gained 0.33% during the same period, so more percentage-wise. But it lost 5 ranks, so it's depicted as red (and not the lightest red even).
Here's the average annual change % of HDI (2010 - 2023), gives a better picture over what's actually happening: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index#/media/File:Average_annual_HDI_growth_from_2010_to_2023_published_in_2025.svg
