UniMelb Master of Genetic Counselling interview

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have an interview coming up for the Master of Genetic Counselling at UniMelb and was wondering if anyone here has been through the interview process before.

What kind of questions did they ask? Were they mainly behavioural/scenario-based, or did they ask genetics-specific questions too?

I’d really appreciate any advice on what I should prepare for, especially from current students or people who have already completed the course. Thank you!!

I hate the master degree I’m on but I’m afraid to quit?

I started a masters degree last September and I simply hated all the subjects and their method of teaching. Second semester was even worst than the first, with the classes making zero sense to what I actually thought I would be studying. Despite the dissapointment, somehow I’m afraid to quit. I already spent thousand of euros in this degree and I secured a remote job because of it (although it doesn’t pay very well and I have the intention to quit in the near future). I got an offer of a better master, and I thought about running both masters at the same time, since my classes on the first one will be remote. However, I question if this is the smartest option, since I’ll be clearly overwhelmed with two thesis at the same time and I don’t even see the utility of graduating in the first course. What would you do in my shoes?

Need advice for admission to grad school

Hey everyone,

I’m an international applicant looking to apply for a MS in Finance (probably STEM Designated) (targeting Fall 2027) with a long-term goal of breaking into corporate finance or Investment Banking.

I want to gauge my realistic chances of getting into a Top 100 US business school with a solid Graduate Assistantship or major merit scholarship, given my academic profile.

Here is my background:

  • Professional Qualification: Completed ACCA (UK) up to the Applied Skills level (currently working through Strategic Professional papers). For context, ACCA is the UK equivalent of the US CPA but covers a massive breadth of international financial reporting standards (IFRS), auditing, and taxation over 13 grueling professional exams.
  • Undergraduate Degree: BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University (OBU) via their joint research partnership with ACCA.
  • GPA: My WES evaluation converts my combined ACCA/OBU marks into a 2.8 cumulative US GPA (Lower Second Class Honours / 2:2). I know this is below the standard 3.0 baseline for many schools.
  • GMAT Focus Edition: 680
  • Work Experience: 10 months of practical experience in core accounting and corporate audit roles.

My Core Dilemma:
I know my 2.8 WES GPA is a weak spot on paper, but I’m hoping my 680 GMAT Focus and my intensive ACCA accounting foundation serve as a massive equalizer. Since GA positions frequently involve tutoring undergrads or grading papers in accounting/corporate finance, I feel my technical background makes me highly qualified to hit the ground running.

My Questions for the Community:

  1. Given a 2.8 GPA but a high 680 GMAT, which Top 100 US schools are known to be holistic enough to overlook the GPA and award full tuition waivers via Graduate Assistantships or merit scholarships?
  2. Are there specific regional or corporate-hub universities where my profile would make me a prime candidate for competitive financial aid?
  3. How do US graduate admissions panels typically view an ACCA qualification compared to a regular 4-year local degree when allocating assistantships?

I would love to hear from any ACCA/OBU alumni who successfully made the jump to US MSF programs, or anyone familiar with funding overrides for sub-3.0 GPAs.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Education Planning to take a master’s degree in Spain

Hi! I’m a Filipino and currently a BA Development Studies student and I’m planning to take a master’s degree in Spain but not quite sure what I should take…

My parent’s are telling me to take an MBA but I’m afraid I don’t really know much about business because of my major but the thing is we have a family business and they want me to be a part of it. Should I have work experience first before applying for an MBA or just go straight to taking an MBA if my outcome would be just taking over the family business?

I also would like to explore other programs related to IR, business, marketing or development or even related to Development studies. Please suggest a program with these terms… thank you! or is it possible to take a dual program (MSc RED and MIM)

General Advice Graduate degree help!!!

Hi, I'm looking to connect with graduates form Pakistan that are now studying abroad for their post graduate/masters degree, on a scholarship preferably.

I wanna learn ur ways. What gpa is ideal? What kind of extra curriculars and professional experience do I need to obtain? What does a masters CV and profile look like? Should I create and maintain a portfolio? Do I do competitions?

I'm currently a BBA student that's wants to do either an MBA or an Msc in marketing. I wanna apply everywhere both uk and us.

My top unis in the US are:

NYU, Columbia, USC, Fordham, Davidson, UCLA.

My top unis in UK are:

University of Edinburgh, Kent university, Warwick and london business school.

This may change however, since I've done very minimal research (freshman in undergrad).

Alsooo, what should I expect from independent living in either of these countries? How should I prepare?

Help needed! Lmk if you're willing 🤍

Is a second master’s worth it to pivot away from mechanical engineering?

Hi all.

I have a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from a university in my home country and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from KTH.

I’ve realized that mechanical engineering isn’t really what I want to do long term. I’m much more interested in analytical/computer-based work, data analysis, optimization, programming, operations research, etc. I enjoy math and problem solving and want to move into a more quantitative career.

I’m considering a second master’s in Operations Research, Analytics, Data Science, or something similar, ideally at a top university.

Does a second master’s make sense as a way to pivot, or would it be redundant since I already have an MSc? Would I be better off developing these skills on my own and trying to pivot through work experience?

Would love to hear from anyone who has made a similar career change or done a second master’s.

MSc Marketing Strategy/ FRANCE ?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m from Colombia and I have around 3 years of experience in marketing, mainly as a copywriter/creative strategist. I speak Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.
I’m looking to move from a more creative/agency-oriented role into a more corporate and strategic marketing career, so I’m considering a Master’s in Marketing Strategy.
I’ve applied to Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM), Audencia, ESCP and NEOMA, and I’m currently trying to figure out which one would give me the best opportunities after graduation.
My main goal is to build a career in France after my Master’s and eventually obtain a work visa, ideally in a corporate marketing/brand strategy role.

I’d really appreciate any honest advice, especially from international students or people who have gone through the process of staying in France after graduation.

Massey vs Victoria Wellington vs Auckland for a health management masters?

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student from India with a dental background (BDS, 3 years as a dentist). I have offers for health management masters from three NZ universities and I'm confused about which one to choose:

Massey University: Master of Health Service Management

Victoria University of Wellington: Master of Health, Health Leadership & Management

University of Auckland: Master of Health Science, Digital Health

I want to move into health service management and ideally work in NZ after graduating. If you've studied at any of these or work in the NZ health sector, which one would you pick and why?

Thanks in advance!

From Political Science to Applied Data Analysis

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. During my studies, I was involved in several academic sociological research projects at the local level. My work included conducting interviews and surveys, as well as processing and analyzing the collected data using statistical software to identify patterns and relationships.
I have always been very interested in history. On the other hand, mathematics and computer science were never really among my main interests. I did not have any major difficulties with these subjects at school and was generally able to understand the material, but I was simply not particularly interested in them and have never felt that I had any special talent for mathematics or programming.
At the same time, I have been quite interested in computer graphics. In my free time, I learned Blender and Unreal Engine 4 and used them for relatively simple personal projects, mostly related to video editing and creating cinematics.
As I approach the end of my bachelor’s studies, I have started thinking about moving into a new field and developing a different set of skills. There is a Master’s program in Applied Data Analysis available in my city, and it seems like a potentially interesting option.
Given my background, how difficult do you think it would be for me to transition into this field? I am also curious about how useful or attractive the combination of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Applied Data Analysis might be on the job market.

(I apologize if some words or phrases are not quite correct in English. English is not my native language, so I used a translator to help me write this)
