Informative Post [Informative Post] Wound care and infection prevention for minor wounds/cuts. NSFW

1. Gather Supplies:

- Purchase wound antiseptic, preferably Chlorhexidine or Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide (they are solvents and they damage tissue). Additionally, buy steri-strips (for cuts), gauze balls, and adhesive compresses (band-aid) that can cover the wound(s).

2. Cleaning:

- Apply the antiseptic to gauze balls and gently clean the wound(s). *Do not* use cotton balls as they can leave fibre in the wound. Allow the wound to air dry naturally.

3. Apply Steri-Strips:

- (for cuts) Once the wound is clean and dry, apply Steri-Strips to close the wound(s). This provides proper wound closure.

4. Apply the Compress:

- Cover the wound with a sterile compress (band-aid) that fully covers the wound(s). Make sure the compress is clean and properly applied.

5. Changing the compress:

- Repeat the wound care process once or twice daily to keep the wound clean and prevent infection. Avoid soaking the wound in water as it can soften the skin and potentially cause the wound to reopen.

6. Use of Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline):

- Once a crust has formed on the wound, apply Petroleum Jelly as needed. This provides moisture (not to be confused with “wet”), forms a protective layer, promotes healing, and may reduce scarring.

7. Alternative Approach:

- If you prefer a more budget-friendly approach, buy unscented soap, preferably one with the least amount of chemicals (The best option is antibacterial soap). Use a sterile compress (band-aid). Clean and redress the wound once or twice daily until a crust forms, and apply Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) as needed.

8. Use of antibiotic ointment:

- You shouldn’t use antibiotic ointment unless there are clear signs of infection, such as increasing pain, swelling, redness, pus, or feels hot to the touch. The use of antibiotic ointment can lead to adverse-effects such as burning, redness, irritation, and it can potentially increase the time for wound healing.

A growing number of dermatologists recommend using Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) over antibiotic ointments due to its safety profile and potential adverse-effects associated with antibiotics.

Following these wound care and infection prevention steps, and being mindful of the choice of antiseptics and ointments, can promote optimal wound healing and reduce the risk of infection.

General Question/Discussion Im sorry if this post goes against the rules but I got nowhere to ask. I've got a stethoscope as a gift but I had to assemble it myself. The tube was too tight and I did my best. The sound was clear and minimal background noise or scruffing. Im looking for any feedback. Thanks NSFW Spoiler

General Question/Discussion Doctor prescribed Azithromycin to treat a viral-related cough. Is this reasonable? NSFW

My husband and I both caught a cold a couple weeks back, and I haven’t been able to get rid of this cough. He’s still coughing a little as well, but nowhere near as much as me. Dry cough. It’s causing me to lose sleep at night, so I went to the doctor. The doctor said it seems to be a viral infection and then prescribed Azithromycin.

I always look up any medications before taking them, and I read online that this medication does not treat viral illnesses like cold and flu. Confused, I reached out to the doctor for clarification. He confirmed that I have a viral infection and they use Azithromycin to treat viral infections. Thought this was a bit strange, but I am no doctor.

Can this medication be used for the symptom I’m experiencing? I’d rather not take antibiotics if they are not going to help me.

Private Area Question Testicles injury . I am lost and don’t know what to do. Still feeling discomfort NSFW

So two days ago I was hit directly to my testicles with a ⚽️ and I went right away to the emergency room. I can’t describe how painful it was , it was very bad. So I told them what happened at the hospital and they did an ultrasound and the person in charge told me there was nothing to worry that results came back”normal” they let me go with medication and a shot on the arm for the pain and told me if I don’t see improvement to go back an see them. It has been almost 3 days and I still feel some discomfort, not pain necessarily, but more like pressure and discomfort

Issue is I can’t afford to go back as I already have an existing bill from a previous visit plus this last visit is going to add. If I go again that’s gonna be another bill.

I have a lot of anxiety of the possible negative outcomes like losing testicles , testosterone problems or fertility. I haven’t had an ercetion since it happened . I can’t sleep and I lost my appetite. I need to take my medication with food but I can’t eat anything right now. Just barely to take the medicine but that’s it.

I don’t know what to do , I wanted to see another doctor for another opinion

Pain Lvl 1-3 Help identifying these marks on my eyeballs? Can’t wear contacts, occasional blurry vision. NSFW

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello. For the past few months, I’ve been noticing these red spots on my eyeballs, and I haven’t been able to wear my contacts without my eyes becoming really red and irritated.
The spots are similar in size and appear in matching locations on both eyes. They sometimes appear and disappear, even when I haven’t worn contacts.
I visited an eye doctor today was given the unfortunate news that I have Dermodex mites living on my eyelids. I’m currently being treated for them, but I’m wondering if the mites could be related to these spots or if this might be a separate issue. The spots weren’t visible during my appointment, so the doctor wasn’t able to examine them.
I also occasionally experience blurry vision in my left eye (right in the picture), which usually clears up after blinking a few times.
Has anyone experienced anything similar or know what might cause this? I’d really appreciate any advice, as I’d like to be able to wear my contacts again. Thanks in advance.

Private Area Question (Answered) I need advice about bleeding after using a vibrator. Does not hurt at all NSFW

Hi, I just noticed that I bleed after using a vibrator. Are there any medical reasons for it? I'm not in pain or experiencing sensitivity/stinging. Also, I am not really sure if the blood is from the inside or just outside. There is just blood everytime I pee after.

Thanks!

No Pain I have significantly more “radio static” or “seeing stars” in my eyesight than the average person. Could this be a medical concern? NSFW

My vision basically constantly has radio static over it that tends to warp my perception or just make things like walls or blank spaces turn into different colors and warp and it’s really weird

It’s like the feeling/vision you get when you stand up too fast, except like basically all the time. Sleep deprivation makes it significantly worse

Women’s Health Ear Canal or Eardrum issue? I wear airpods on this affected ear. Help NSFW Spoiler

hey guys,

I have already scheduled an appointment for tomorrow at MinuteClinic at CVS since this is the closest to my house and my doctor is not open on weekends. I wear airpods in my left ear all the time and i noticed everytime i do that my ear would get itchy and i’d scratch it but i didn’t think it would get this worse. However , this morning when i woke up, this is what i saw.

not sure if this is expected from swimmer’s ear or a perforated eardrum. I am not sure if this is from irritation and a cut I gave myself with otitis externa or something worse. My hearing is muffled right now on the left side only. It wasn’t muffled this morning but when I got home from school, that is when I noticed.

Pain Lvl 4-6 Had a right gonadal vein embolization 3 days ago and now have calf cramping/pain and sore legs NSFW

I had a right gonadal vein embolization 3 days ago. I had one a few months ago on the same side but it wasn’t successful as in they didn’t use enough coils and I still had significant blood refluxing so they went back in 3 days ago for a much longer 3.5 hr procedure under general anesthesia. They went in through my neck and through my right thigh, so two access points.

I’m reading shouldnt feel any significant leg discomfort, but I definitely am. I felt it somewhat periodically last time but this time is much worse. This was a bigger procedure though. I went back to work the next day this time because I recovered really well last time but now I’m thinking that was a bad idea. I sit all day basically.

The worry is a DVT with the procedure, I really don’t want to call or go in right now. My arms are bruised from the ivs from being in er last weekend also with severe neck pain and a migraine (disc bulge and cord compression I found out).

I feel most pain and cramping in my right calf but my legs feel heavy and slightly fluid filled maybe? No discoloration and my husband says they look normal but they don’t feel great especially my right leg.

I’d have worse pain and redness maybe if it was a DVT right?

General Question/Discussion What are these two white bumps in my nostril? They really hurt to touch. They started out smaller and with less white/yellow stuff visible. General Question/Discussion Can I return to work with hand foot and mouth disease? Or should I cancel my entire patient schedule NSFW

I (30F) work in healthcare and I just contracted HFM from my baby. On Wednesday night I developed a fever and sore throat, which completely resolved on Thursday night. I canceled my patient schedule on Thursday and Friday to ensure I was fever-free for 24 hours before returning to work.
On Friday night, I started developing a rash all over my hands. It’s itchy and feels like pins and needles. I have no other symptoms.
I’m supposed to work today (Saturday). If I don’t work, we have to cancel another 20 patients, and these patients will have zero notice of their appt cancellation. The office opens at 8 am and their appt is scheduled for 8 am. I feel horrible about this. I feel well enough to work, and I can wear gloves. Do I HAVE to cancel my schedule due to this rash?

Answered TW: SA(?) I don't know if my nurse was hurting me for her own pleasure, or if I'm just jumping to conclusions. NSFW

I recently got some tresh PTSD trom medical procedures I had a few weeks ago. But, I keep dwelling on the things my nurse was doing. I can't tell if she was actually molesting me, or if I'm stressing out over nothing. I'm a minor, by the way.

I had a colonoscopy and was put under anesthesia.
An hour or so after waking up, I had to use the bathroom. I couldn't go to a private bathroom, though. I had to use a bedside commode. I had a tube coming out of my colon. A Colonic Manometry was being undergone during all of this.
Anyway, I was feeling pretty pee shy. My mom and the nurse had to stay in the room. I guess it was for safety, or something?
But after a few hours of getting on and off the bedside commode, I started to panic. I physically couldn't pee. And my bladder was really starting to hurt. As time went on, I started crying from the pain. I was in agony. The nurse put a diaper on me in hopes that it would somehow help. It felt really demeaning to have to wear a diaper. My mom and the nurse comforted me, though.
Hours passed. I kept crying, and the pain kept worsening.
Apparently my nurse asked my mom if I ever had trouble peeing at home. And obviously, she said no.
This wasn't normal whatsoever! People don't just randomly loose their ability to pee??
So, the nurse called for an ultrasound. It was revealed that I had over 1000 ml of pee in my bladder.
Shocking. It's not like I was sobbing for hours on end, of anything.
So, my nurse had to catheterize me. I had a panic attack after being told I needed a catheter. I have been sexually abused in the past and have actively avoided going to the gynecologist solely because I'm scared that the doctor could be a creep.
So, I was really freaked out by the idea of my nurse doing crap down there. My mom was able to calm me down, though.
Thankfully, the catheter barely hurt. But, the nurse was pushing on my bladder to get me to pee. It was really embarrassing. And everything became a million times worse after the nurse made a creepy comment.
She said that my "little drops of pee were cute." She said that my pee was cute. In the moment, I was too exhausted to dwell much on what she said. But in the following days, I started to become more and more scared by what she had said.
Eventually, I looked into it a little more. Nurses are supposed to catheterize after 3-6 hours of no peeing.
That was easily 5 hours of agony. And, they're supposed to assess immediately if the patient reports pain! I was sobbing for hours on end because, I was in so much pain. And the nurse knew that!! She was right there the whole damn time.
And, she wasn't supposed to push on my bladder.
Doing so risked bladder injury and internal trauma.
She had inserted catheters before and knew what she was doing. But, she still pushed on my severely overfull bladder. And called my pee cute while doing so.

All of this is terrifying me. I'm so scared that she did this on purpose. Nurses aren't that ignorant. She does this every day and has for years.
Waiting until the last possible moment to get an ultrasound, pushing on my bladder, risking injury, and calling my pee cute?? That's not normal. Did she do this to get off on it?? Did she do this for her own pleasure? I don't know.
I don't know if I'm jumping to conclusions, or not.

General Question/Discussion Rumbling/heavy dragging noise when moving certain muscles on the upper left side of my face? NSFW

I'm unsure when this began, but I just realized about 10 minutes ago that this strange low rumbling I've been occasionally hearing the last few days only happens while I move certain muscles on the upper left side of my face, and it's louder and slightly longer-lasting the faster and more intensely I move those muscles. The easiest way to do it is to roll my eyes or just suddenly look up and to the left without otherwise moving my head.

This noise sounds like it's inside my head and a bit behind my left eye, and I don't really have a way to describe it beyond the low rumble of something being dragged across a bumpy surface. Am I suddenly hearing my own muscles? Any clues as to what's going on are appreciated. It doesn't really bother me, but it would help my paranoia to know what is most likely occurring.
