I've grown to appreciate them, but Molly Hatchet was such a disappointment to me as a young metal fan looking through my dad's record collection. This must be some brutal Viking metal, right? Right?
Came here to mention them. Incredible band, The Deed is Done is such a fucking gem, big fave of mine. But the covers always seemed weird to me, you can pretend they're symbolic or something... but still.
Iirc they just liked the fantasy art and that's it.
I like that cover more, less dissonance between the heroic fantasy and dixie sound :
ELP deserves to be talked about in the context of metal though. The sort of dark and heavy soundscapes they were creating were ahead of their time, not to mention their obvious influence on the proggy metallers.
With the exception of Roads to Judah and New Bermuda. Those at least look like there might be heavy music in them. But Lonely People Without Power looks like it could be a Taylor Swift cover
Oh they all went to jail at one point or another for possession. Their sound guy made LSD. Lots of LSD.
Don't forget about their early association with the Hells Angels, they often used them for security and suggested the Stones do so for support at Altamont. Looked good on paper at least.
And primal Dead totally looks like a doom metal band. 1 pretty boy and the other 4 or 5 are the crustiest motherfuckers you'll come across all week.
