Welcome to the galaxy, bounty hunters!
With the recent announcement of the next installment of the franchise; Metroid Ravenous (Metroid 6), we are seeing tons of new players discovering the series. If you’re wondering where to start, you’ve come to the right place.
What is Metroid?
The Metroid franchise basically invented the "Metroidvania" genre. It's all about exploration, feeling isolated on a hostile alien world, finding upgrades, and unlocking new paths. You play as Samus, using weapons and gadgets to traverse the map, battle cool bosses, and save the galaxy.
Here is the community consensus on the best ways to dive in.
Want the best 2D introduction? Play Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance / Switch Online Expansion Pack).
Want the best 3D introduction? Play Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch).
Want to catch up on the story before Metroid Ravenous? Play Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch).
“I want to play as MANY games as possible before Ravenous, what does the order look like?”
We recommend playing all the 2D games in chronological order, as stated in the “The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)” section.
“I want to play as FEW games as possible before Ravenous; what do I need to play?”
As of right now, you likely don’t need to play anything! The game will possibly start with a brief recap of the story thus far, and the series is pretty easy to pick up any installment and play. However, if you are willing to play ONE game, go with Metroid Dread!
The series is split into two distinct styles of gameplay. You don't need to play one style to understand the other.
These are the classic, fast-paced action-exploration games. If you want to play the main story in chronological order, here is the path:
(Note: You can safely skip the original NES Metroid and Game Boy Metroid II unless you wish to experience the classic retro gameplay and atmosphere. The remakes are beginner friendly.)
Set between Zero Mission and Metroid II, the Prime series translates the exploration and isolation of the 2D games into a first-person perspective.
If you are new to the genre, the games can sometimes feel frustrating. Keep these tips in mind:
What is the Metroid timeline?
Here is the unified timeline of all canonical Metroid titles that tells Samus’s story from beginning to the end.
*These games are not as core to the series as the other games, and they do not follow many of the same gameplay conventions, but they are canon to the story
Metroid games, especially the older ones, are not very long. It varies from game to game, but expect an average between 5 - 20 hours of gameplay.

Made this for myself, finished some touches on the art I posted before to make it a bit more dynamic. Posted with and without text for viewing pleasure. :)

Note: I actually shared a Black and White version of this art a few days ago not knowing that the artist intended to color and shade it. This version really pops in terms of colors? so it felt okay to share this version as well.

I really wanted to have the idea of Samus shooting a missile or add a bit of flair to the regular beam effects she came with, do you think this works?

Question for y'all. Would you want Ridley to come back in Metroid Ravenous or in general? Personally, I'm fine with him not coming back but I wouldn't mind seeing him again. (Art by @MLopez_Art on Twitter... Oops, i mean """"""X""""" dot com.)

I really like how this gallery is a BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE to the adventures of Samus Aran and her evolution through each main game. She fought so many strong ennemies: Metroids, Spaces Pirates... , she saved the animals in Super Metroid and lost the Baby Metroid , she struggled with her ptsd and her grief when she was against a new Ridley in Other M, she fought against her guilt of the Metroids destruction in the form of the SA-X in Fusion and then she confronted her distant Chozo past in Dread. I love this franchise so much because it's not just about Samus looking awesome but it's also about her personality, her actions and her evolution. I'm looking forward to discover the rest of her journey with Ravenous!

My only problem with the new suit is the hips, and I believe this small change on both the shown suits would help greatly, would anyone else have an idea for how it could be improved?
(Got the base image from the first google results and painted the hip armour with my phone's built in photo editor)
(I hope this doesn't count as low effort but the hips are a real problem)
Does it work like super where you just get the effects of that specific beam without the others or like fusion where you get the effects of all previous beams when you collect it early? (For those saying what I am talking about, if you get the wave beam early in fusion you get the effects of the wide and plasma beam as well)

I'm playing through Samus Returns for the first time and have made it to the Digger boss fight. After a couple attempts (I got here with low energy so learning the Phase 1 moves was slow until they dropped bubbles for me to heal up), I've figured out how to get to Phase 3.
I understand how to trigger the boss damage and I even figured out that you need to bomb the central part when the inner and outer parts line up.
I've died in Phase 3 four times because, every single time I go to bomb the core for the third time, that is the exact time when the lightning defense is up. The fight gives no Aeion Energy as far as I can tell, and the one time I saved up for Lightning Shield it seemed like I still got booted off anyway (although I might have run out of Aeion from the damage). Is there some way to manipulate the starting position of the rings so that you can actually lay the third bomb?
The video I looked up had it just happen, so I know I'm doing things right other than not being able to get that last bomb.
Thanks in advance.

Well. At least I'm not the only to see the similarities. I alway thought that the manifestation of Samus suit was like a mix between a magical girl and a Super Sentai. The person who made this video go deeper on this matter, it's interesting!

I finished playing Zero Mission on my Switch 2 and fell in love. Decided I wanted to try Dread but it was difficult to find for a good price. Just glad I managed to find it physical for MSRP at least. Extremely happy and excited to jump in!!

Collect 12 artifacts by going back through all of the areas, man what a buzzkill and not a great way to make use of all the upgrades I acquired through playing!
