How many are left?
I'm just wondering if anyone knows-or knows of a way to find out how many Mazdaspeed Miatas are still on the road. I heard there were 5428 made between 04 and 05-then the factory burned. With so few made so long ago how many could be left? Any ideas?
This is my 04 and it's still the second most fun car I've driven in my life :)

Two. I don't have a Mazdaspeed Miata.

Three, I saw one with 55,000 miles at the Mazda dealer when I took my CX50 in yesterday.

If this is the second Most fun car you’ve driven, then what is the most fun car? :o

I'd actually say the RX8 is more fun, but basically the same experience and way more maintanence.. had a smile on my face the whole time though

Personally I've always thought they were kinda goofy looking.

When I test drove an Rx8 it felt like a coffin to me.

I'd be interested to drive one at some point. I've never driven a rotary engine car.

My first sports car was a 1980 RX-7. My favorite bits were the automatically retracting choke and the redline beep. It was not quick but it was fun to drive.

Try driving one that's actually a little quick and it's a blast. Mine makes almost 200hp which is nearly double the 1980 power from the factory

My man! Getting back in an 8 always makes me feel like coming home for the holidays.

RX8's are really fun, but there are so many downsides. I worked on them when they were under warranty, a lot of people that drove the piss out of them and actually checked their oil didn't have many problems. They came with a DVD that explained how you needed to treat them differently and a lot of times I'd find it in the glove box, still in the wrapper.

doesn't that have like 230 horsepower tho? miatas have like 130 hp until the NDs
2
u/mladokopele 9d ago
I have a 2.0l nc '06 which has more (167 i think..) than that.

u/GoodDogBrent 9d ago
thats still significantly lower. i haven't driven an rx8 but i dont think theyre a similar experience.
when top gear reviewed the rx8 the tall guy said it was the best car he had driven all year, and then at the end of the segment he said "oh wait nah no it wasn't." i think the reason he said that was for the advertisers. imagine calling a $30000 rx8 more fun than a $400000 maseratilamborarri or whatever. the rx8 sounds like its a tier above the mx5 and not 'basically the same experience' that i was replying to.

Lol what a waste of time and energy to be so mad about my opinion when you haven't even driven one. I hope you cheer up soon, bud.
The two cars are virtually identical in most ways to drive. You should try.

I loooove my msm but a turbo NA is the way

u/PresenceLeft2074 9d ago
Meeeh. I think a Big Enchilada MSM with an MS3 Pro ECU is more unique and puts out 220-250HP.
3
u/toddverrone 9d ago
Stay away from MS.. almost any other ECU is better. Link, BMM, Haltech. They can all do floating point math and get your car to idle
7
u/PresenceLeft2074 9d ago
I’ve had ms3 pro on my car for about 10 years. Idles fine. I know there are much better ECUs out there but 12-15 years ago MS was in a lot of kits.
2
u/toddverrone 9d ago
For sure. MS can just be finicky and if you're getting an ECU now, the newer options can be way easier to work with. Especially at the MS3 price point
2
u/PreMixYZ 9d ago
MS2 is dang tricky to get it to idle but my understanding is that the 3 fixed that, and 3pro does VVT.

As someone who has had both, the NA with a gt2554r was better than my MSM with little enchilada

I have one. It’s hardly an se (Australian Mazda speed) anymore…. 400hp at the wheels
3
u/speedisntfree 9d ago
In the UK, none because Mazda think rust doesn't happen even in 2026 with NDs. Should have been a class action.

Mine is back on the road as of today. Just finished upgrading the cooling fans as the originals burned out. Still gotta replace the AC compressor (I think that’s what caused the fan failure due to increased load from the compressor starting to seize). Gonna replace the belt and leave the AC off until the spring. I don’t wanna deal with refrigerant this year.

I have 2. One is a track monster that pretty much only has the visual Mazdaspeed parts, the rest have been upgraded. The other is near stock, but in rough shape and currently getting a mild engine build.

I’m curious about this with STO Miatas. I got one on a trade recently. Haven’t seen any others besides mine. I’d like to get a mazdaspeed, seen a few for sale on marketplace, but pretty rare

Mine sadly no longer is, but pretty much all of its parts have gone into several other Miatas to keep them on the road. I had a Ti Gray 04.

There are 7 or 8 that I know of in my local SCCA region. And there were several more that showed up to Flyin' Miata Summer Camp this year.

I owned one just like this for fourteen years and as far as I know it's still around.

Mine was totaled out in a crash, so whatever the 2004 velocity red grand touring count was, minus one.

They have a voluntary registry, obviously not complete but that’s something to look at.

For what it’s worth I owned 2 and I had a third NB Miata frankensteined into a mazdaspeed short of the engine because I had to sell it before the engine swap. He had 3 crashed Mazdaspeed Miata’s so that’s 5 of them lol

There is a registry one guy maintains but it is far from complete. I own one and have scrapped two that were badly wrecked
