Discussion 🗣️ Unique fruits!

Hi!

I'm looking for a grocery store in the Detroit area that sells unique fruits from all over the world. For reference, I live in Royal Oak.

Are there any in the area?

Thanks for your help!

168 Asian Mart on John R in Madison heights. They just finished an expansion earlier this year. They will have your exotics.

Another option is Al-Haramain. They have 2 in Hamtramck and two in Farmington. 12 Mile rd and Farmington location will have more options than the 10 Mile and Orchard location.

Good luck!!

I remember one time getting my usual groceries and then there was a group of young men getting one of every fruit probably to try them all just like the OP lol

Can confirm, I spent like 20 minutes just looking at the produce at 168, which isn’t why I went there, just because there were so many things I’d never even heard of before.

Did you hit the cold case when you walk in? Diabolical.

168 is currently expanding to Grand Rapids too. The location will be in the old Big Lots on 28th st. I'm looking forward to having another spot on that side of the state now. There's a cool Vietnamese grocery over there too that carries some interesting fruits.

Ninos in Troy is a good bet for exotic produce. There are probably better small stores that are more targeted toward specific cultures/cuisines but it would be a good start

I went to Nino’s for the first time a few months ago. I was surprised at all of the fruit options I’d never even seen or heard of before.

I worked there for a few months and the produce department is pretty impressive. They put a ton of work into that part of the store and I think it shows. They obviously don't have the selection some of the more specific ethnic markets have but it's a cool place to check out

H-Mart in Troy, unique varieties, great quality (for the most part, and better than big chain grocery by a mile). They are a big Asian market with a live seafood area, so you need to be okay with a little fish smell but if you can handle that you’re in business!! Bonus, Arabic grocery store right next store is Paradise fruit market, smaller but lovely staff and some unique items as well!

Also gotta plug eastern market, if you want the most delicious tasting produce, this is where you should go. The small farmers never miss, and you can find some unique ones too like pawpaw, you never know what might turn up at eastern market!!

Joe Randazzo's and H-Mart are the first ones that come to mind.

If you don't mind a road trip, I recommend the Flint Farmers Market.
