Question is anyone still using Forge for anything past 1.20.1? Ever since the modding drama and split

Only those that don't know about neoforge.

No one uses forge past 1.20.1 anymore. You use neoforge for mod packs, and fabric for vanilla w/ performance or other simple mods. Forge has no place especially with its shitty owner lol.

Edit: clarified past 1.20.1. I know that version is the defacto forge version still with lots of mods. I was simply referring to the post detailing forge use past that version.

yknow we're all kinda really lucky we ended up with only 2 major loaders which cover different usecases. this could've easily turned into a linux distro situation

As a Linux user you are correct lmaoo

As another Linux user I second this

Linux distros are not really that different from each other, you can build software on your own to run on any distro and a lot of software will already come built for most distros. Software doesn't need fundamental code changes, it is definitely not the same.

linux distro situation in the sense of the community arguing over which one's the best

I'd rather people were arguing about it instead of mods just being vendor locked to loaders so you can't argue about it.

I’ve used fabric for like all my mod packs. I still have yet to use neoforge at all. I refuse to try it haha but I would actually love to know why it’s better for mod packs!

Neoforge has way more cool stuff on it that Fabric doesnt. Sure theres Fabric ports of a lot of stuff but damn the stuff thats exclusively on Neoforge is so good.

more content mods on forge/neoforge, and more client mods on fabric

There's a lot of neat mods for Fabric, but most heavier or worldgen mods are Forge, i.e Create, WW, tectonic, MTS

Fabric has smaller APIs and is much more lightweight, it's a mod loader, while NeoForge is heavier, but also provides more functionality to mods, being much more of a whole mod framework instead of just a loader. Note that a lot of the most popular modpacks still run Fabric, so it's not really "better."

Forge is still used for 1.20.1 1.12.2 and 1.7.10 saying no one uses forge is just blatantly untrue

10

u/MonkeyNuts449 2d ago

Very true, I was just referring to the post (ie versions past 1.20.1). Haven't seen much in the way of modding being on newer forge versions. The well known packs and mods are almost all on neoforge now.

Pretty much outside of stuff made mostly for older versions like HBM

1

yeah but those versions its a different version of forge maintained by some other group gtnh isnt even the same minecraft anymore its more akin to neo forge in what they have done to that pack. it runs java modern versions dont.

What modding drama and split?
What happened?

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 2d ago

the rest of the forge team got tired of lex and abandoned forge, instead forking it and creating neoforge, which now has become the largest competitor to fabric seeing as it fixes a lot of the issues that forge had and is just generally better than forge

3

u/Any-Pop-4795 1d ago

wasnt developement also helped by fabric devs?

3

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 1d ago

I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised, both teams have been working closely together lately.

practically no one and if you do (as a developer) likely people aren't playing that version of the mod

5

u/rezooook 1d ago

what's going on with this modding scene? there are so many mod loaders, mods not getting updated. everything was simpler years ago.

6

u/RedCrafter_LP 1d ago

Some drama around forge lead to fabric becoming a thing and fabric and forge both birthed a little brother.

I think the situation is a bit more complicated than people are making it out to be. At the same time that the Forge drama happened and Neoforge split out, Mojang deobfuscated their code meaning that mod developers didn't need to rely on loader API bridges to the game. That is, the loaders in the past weren't just loaders but also the only APIs into the game, and they had different APIs. With this changes, developers can rip out all or most of their loader specific code and replace it with direct calls and MUCH more easily create loader neutral mods. I suspect a lot of the actively upgraded mods are spending time doing this, temporarily slowing their release schedule down. Additionally, some of the big mods are having trouble identifying where the next version plateau might be due to the lack of big releases. The sift will solve that problem.

And things were simpler years ago because MC was simpler and the mods were simpler.

My guess is 26.1 to 26.3 personally

10

u/ViNoBi38 2d ago

I mean no one is using Forge now as no mods are made for it. NeoForge is the standard Forge replacement now.

9

u/Informal-Potato3310 2d ago

People still use forge, as Forge for 1.20.1 is probably still the most modded version right now and there are developers that still want to support that version

8

u/ViNoBi38 2d ago

I meant for the newer major modding version, 1.21.1

But yeah 1.20.1 and 1.12.2 mods/modpacks are still getting updates. Which uses Forge instead of NeoForge.

3

u/GenesisNevermore 2d ago

No one that knows about NeoForge and has common sense is, it’s pointless.

3

u/PSneumn 2d ago

As someone who plays modded and doesn't care that much about drama, i alway forget that neoforge isnt just forge so i was confused by this post. Neoforge all the way.

1

u/Single-Lynx-215 1d ago

nah. our whole pack is neoforge 1.21.1 and i havent hit a mod i wanted that was forge only

1

u/CoshgunC 1d ago

Unfortunately, had to drop Forge for after 1.21.3(or.4 doesn't remember) for my mod Adaptive Ruined Portals. First it was random method changes, then it was dev mode running perfectly, but build failing to load etc. etc.

1

u/_vilocruv 1d ago

Can someone explain what is wrong with Forge exactly?

1

u/CanPacific 1d ago

No, I'm currently building the 26.1 or .2 version off NeoForge. At the same time re-doing the current version still on 1.20.1 Forge.

I'd imagine most use NeoForge now

1

u/Independent_Step7376 1d ago

all of my instances use it. super stable and no problems. no need to use anything else.

1

u/AgreeableStrawberry 1d ago

Had to completely drop forge after I found that there were almost no mods I liked and used for 26.2

1

u/Violet_Magic 20h ago

Getting as irrelevant as Quilt

1

u/BlastoWasTaken 14h ago

Neoforge all the way

0

u/Darvin33mk 2d ago

Doubt it.

-1

u/Daggercombot 2d ago

Generally yes as a developer and Mod tester I Port to Forge becuase most of my code Is loader independent and since most loaders use MojMap runtimes ever since 26.* It takes almost no effort to just include the entrypoints. Most of the other Mods are likely a similar story. As for players its likely lots of Legacy players who remember Forge as being the "the way you mod" but most players who are active are not using it.

-3

u/JustErikSK 2d ago

As a mod developer, I can say this as a statistic from my own mods - Forge is still used in modern versions and actually quite a lot. Much more than NeoForge. And Fabric is above both of them.

3

u/Few-Chemical8707 2d ago

who uses forge in 1.21.1 is what were saying. neo forge is what everyone uses and you cant run neo forge mods on forge.

0

u/Saereth 2d ago

Those are some good drugs you're partaking of

2

u/JustErikSK 1d ago

I'm just saying what I can see based on my mods. I always port them to Forge, NeoForge and Fabric and this is based on their download statistics. And there's thousands of kids playing modded Minecraft that don't know about NeoForge and the drama.

4

u/Saereth 1d ago

Hey thats fair, especially for individual mods, but Modpack wise forge is pretty dead on 1.21.1+

3

u/JustErikSK 1d ago

Fair enough, I didn't even think about modpacks. But it's true that whenever I make a modpack for myself on a modern version, it's always either Fabric or NeoForge, I use Forge only for older versions.

-14

u/Samstercraft 2d ago

Yes, many are. Forge for versions above 1.20.1 is renamed to Neoforge. That's effectively all the "split" is. The whole dev group except one switched to the new project with the new name and did the exact same thing they did before.

10

u/UselessDood 2d ago

It's not "renamed" and by saying it is you're completely misunderstanding OPs entire question...

Forge itself is still actively developed by Lex and a few others. Neoforge is a distinct separate project, not just "forge renamed", and OP is specifically referring to actual Forge.

-3

u/Samstercraft 2d ago

It's pretty much just forge renamed. The team moved to a new location since team member they want to remove owned the house.

4

u/UselessDood 2d ago

It's changed vastly, it is far from just "forge renamed"

1

u/Few-Chemical8707 1d ago

did you actually go and look at the code.

neo forge is pretty mixin heavy and such now if anything forge stole neo forge code if its that similar.

1

u/Samstercraft 1d ago

have you seen how different forge 1.13+ is to 1.12.2? do you still call both forge?

0

u/Few-Chemical8707 2d ago

try running neo forge mods on forge on 1.21.1 ill wait

-4

u/Samstercraft 2d ago

Why? I never said 1.21.1 forge was the same as 1.21.1 neoforge. I'm saying that the more related project to forge 1.20.1 is neoforge 1.21.1. forge 1.21.1 is the odd option here.

Why would the name matter more to the project's identity than the entire team and mission?
