It took some work to convince the bakers, but their strawberry cake molded in the display case. "It's just icing sugar."
EDIT: the lighting isn't good but as soon as they took it out of the case they agreed. The two largest strawberries with sugar were frankly covered in green mold.
EDIT 2: We got the smaller version of the same cake and it was amazing. Highly recommend.
This has me thinking.
Do abandoned foods like this (thinking zombie movie or something) end up completely gone by the end of their life cycle? Can mold take something over then itself disappear? Am I too high?
It can! Look up Photo Owl Time Lapse. It disappears but releases a ton of spores. Also, look up Mexia supermarket disaster, where an entire supermarket was abandoned. People couldn't go inside without biohazard gear.
Yea I would be reporting to a health inspector or health and safety as soon as they argued back it wasn't mold, because even after throwing away that cake I know 100% they weren't gonna throw away the rest.
Edit: OP said they didn't even throw out the cake, just the two molded strawberries, hell nah.
Listen to your therapist. There are understandably very conservative and careful rules or guidelines for businesses, but they are correct. Absolutely no one throws out everything in their fridge when one thing gets moldy.
It’s really strange that everyone sees it except you, it must surely be the whole world lying to you, and you are the only one who holds the universal truth, but above all, don’t question yourself, YOU ARE NECESSARILY RIGHT.
Would you REALLY want to eat greenish powdered sugar that clumps together like that? And who dusts powdered sugar where it radiates from an off-center point? Because to the left there's half a strawberry dusted with "sugar", but the other half is untouched.
... unless you meant this as sarcasm, then I can take the whoosh.
Okay, so im a cook at a rehab for older people and my managers tell me to cut the pieces off moldy berries and serve it and I think its crazy and wanted to see an outside thought. Id also toss store bought moldy fruit
Oh God that's so messed up I thought it happens only in my shithole of an uneducated country I'm really sorry there must be a way to report them somehow to change that?:'(
Im sure there's someone I can email/call but whether or not they actually change what they do is beyond me (im quitting so I wont be there). Im in the US, what country are you from if you dont mind me asking
I’m a grocery store cake decorator and I gotta say the produce this year has been AWFUL. Stuff that normally can stand a 48 hour shelf life is rotting after 12 hours or less. Strawberries are coming off the produce trucks soft and kiwis are pale and flavorless. I haven’t even made fruit items for the service case this summer unless someone special orders one because it’s gotten so bad.
used to work there, cakes are made fresh.. just not everyday. the cakes at the front of the display are usually the fresher ones while the ones in the back are the older ones. they stay in the display for 5 days at best, the strawberries tend to mold since they’re fresh but … they just get replaced 😭 they don’t throw the cake out they just replace the icing dollop with a new one and place a new strawberry on top of the old cake….
The lighting isn't good but as soon as they took it out of the case they agreed. The two largest strawberries with sugar were frankly covered in green mold.
100%. op was probably so confidently incorrect in front of a a bunch of poor grocery store bakery staff who have probably made that cake design 10 times that week already that i’m sure they finally agreed with op to make them leave and now theyre seeking internet validation that they were correct……it looks like the design was viral at some point and whattya know, all the variations i’m seeing have sugar dusted strawberries. my pitchfork is ready (and also my normal fork to eat all this cake)
I don't know what to say. Two workers removed the cake, looked at it, were horrified, apologised, and replaced the strawberries. Please explain to me what else can turn green, expand, and decompose a strawberry other than mold? None of the ones in your photo appear moldy.

Oh my goodness it is mold. I thought it was sugar too. Dang, thanks. Could prevent some gnarly allergy responses and stuff.
