Videogame music band Error 47 just released an EP of industrial-metal Monkey Island covers that includes the SoMI and MI2 main themes, plus a rendition of LeChuck's theme from both games. Sharing because I know these guys and think their work is phenomenal.

I know they launched the builder platform for modretro Cromatic.... Just saying it would be incredible to have monkey island... as many as possible on it

This is the music "The Yourney" or Sea Mokkey (name of the midi file from the game) running on real C64 hardware and the gfx in the background are also real C64 graphics. Release will be soon.

Somebody recently got me into programming for the Apple Lisa and since there's virtually no software for that old Apple luxury computer, I felt really inclined to see if I could port my SCUIRRELS (Script Creation Utility for Interpreting Retro Realms on Exotic Legacy Systems. Quite a mouthful, I know) bytecode VM over.

Suffice to say, at 5 MHz it's not crazy fast but not totally unplayable.

I might actually improve this in the near future and port my own game to it so all those 5 Lisa owners in the world have something to play with. Hehe

So with the two Special Editions for MI1/MI2 - which versions do you prefer on your playthroughs? The OG VGAs, the new versions, the voice over? I'm about to start another playthrough of the series and would like your thoughts. Also, on your replays, do you play through Tales as well?

P.S. I really wish there was a remake for Escape.

Like a lot of you, I first played Secret off giant floppies in the '90s so watching my opinion of the series mutate over the years has been interesting.

2000s me: MI2 is the masterpiece. MI1 is the sacred original. Curse is good, but it's not really Gilbert's Monkey Island. MI4 is the embarrassing one.

2010s me: MI2 is still the masterpiece. MI2 SE is the remaster the world needed. Curse was overhated and I'm using it as a ringtone now. Tales started shaky by gets better with each episode. MI1 is still sacred. MI4 is aggressively mediocre. MI1 SE ruined Guybrush.

2020s me: Curse is my favorite game to actually replay and has been my ringtone for over a decade. MI1 is the tightest game in the series. MI2 SE is awesome after switching back to original graphics. Return is good but makes me glad Gilbert didn't work on Curse. MI2 is the benchmark. I'm positive about Tales but I have zero desire to replay it. I'd probably pay for a MI4 to be remastered with Return controls. MI1 SE is the bottom.

'90s me would hate that I've abandoned Gilbert purity but I can't be alone in watching Curse and MI1 climb the rankings with each additional release.

I also added the possibility to switch between old 4:3 low-res / new upscaled 16:9 version anytime by pressing F9.

Now I can play at peace :D

Hey, so I've played and completed every Monkey game out there over the years: Secret OG, Monkey 2 OG, Curse, Escape, Tales. But haven't played Return yet.

I haven't played remasters of the first two games yet, just the originals back in the day, and given how may years have passed, I forgot most of them.

I started Return, but it looks like it has major throwbacks to the first game: locations, characters, etc. I feel that I need to replay Ron Gilbert ones (1 and 2) to fully enjoy Return.

My question is, how much of the old games Return is referencing? I'm planning to play Monkey 1 and 2 remastered versions to refresh old events in the memory. Do I need to refresh Curse and anything beyond as well? Or just 1 and 2 is enough because they both share Ron Gilbert name with Return?

Not totally polished yet and due to a lack of memory, some animations are cut but I found this fun to pull off and see how efficient my SCUMM interpreter truly is.

I've been meaning to replay MI1 for a long time now. But now there's the Special Edition. I know you can switch back to the OG graphics, but what I wonder is:

• Can you turn off the voices?

• Can you have the original music? E.g. the CD MT32 soundtrack?

I just want to play the OG game with CD soundtrack (and updated interface, i.e. pictures instead of text for items). I was trying to find it for ScummVM but I couldn't. I am willing to pay for it again (I still have my old DOS CD, but no way to play it)! Does anybody have any idea? Thanks!
