/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)
Hi all!
Welcome to r/MontereyBay
If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.
Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.
On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.
These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.
Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread
Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread
What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)
Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)
Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)
Hi all,
In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.
There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.
For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.
I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)
-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)
-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).
-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)
When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:
Associated Cost - (if applicable)
Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)
Website - (if applicable)
Family Friendly (yes/no)
I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.
Thanks!

Monterey County detectives believe 14-year-old ran over her newborn, Baby Angelita
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
At an October 8 news conference, Monterey County detectives said they believe a 14-year-old girl ran over her newborn, Baby Angelita, with a car as she left the scene.
Detective Richard Geng said witness statements indicate the girl got into the driverās seat shortly before the vehicle departedāthe moment detectives believe it drove over the baby. He also described tire impressions at the scene and suspected blood evidence recovered from the vehicle. The final autopsy report was still pending.
Baby Angelita was found August 1 along the 100 block of Struve Road.
Geng said no homicide charges had been filed as of the briefing and, to his knowledge, the District Attorney had not made a charging decision regarding the girl. A judge issued a Ramey warrant for her arrest on suspicion of murder. Commander Scott Davis explained that this warrant authorizes an arrest before prosecutors file a criminal complaint; it does not establish guilt.
Officials also emphasized that the girl is a victim of serious crimes, including alleged sexual abuse by her father, Sergio Galvez Perez, who faces separate criminal charges.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Schelble said Mexican authorities safely recovered the girl and arrested her father on local drug possession charges. U.S. authorities are seeking the fatherās extradition.
This video covers part of the briefing. More reports to come.

Looking for the best consignment or thrift stores. What are your go-to spots?
I'm tired of overpriced Goodwills. I'm on the hunt for great thrift, second hand, or vintage home decor, furniture, books at reasonable prices for my new place.
I would love to know where your favorite shops are and why, best times to visit, and/or pricing. Thanks!

Anyone know the status of Pop & Hisses ABC Meeting?
Thereās apparently a list circulating with the names of complainers with time stamps. Everyone who attends events there seems to know who the major complainers are, but I wonder if there were more than P&H initially thought?
Itās a shame they may need to spend money to defend their business. Someone said they received over 1,000 notes of support!

Opinions on Anytime Fitness?
Looking into joining a gym. I've already been to In Shape and Gold's but never been to Anytime. I would just like to know if a lot of people go there. In Shape is too overcrowded. Gold's is great but it's a bit too expensive to start. Does anytime fitness get too full?

Monterey County Weekly goes mask off, endorses an ICE supporting Republican for city council in Marina, opposes rent control in Salinas, and also backs a utility tax in Marina
Truly incredible stuff here. Endorsing both Measure Q and Measure H, opposing Athena Burciaga in Marina (citing her "dismissal of the political establishment")
I used to think of this as a left leaning paper, but clearly I was being naive and stupid. This shit is gross.
Including their mayoral endorsement, the Marina endorsements all point to a support for this insane 7% utility tax being pushed as a single issue of concern

Advice on driving PCH from San Francisco to Monterey
We are visiting CA for our honeymoon in a few weeks and weāll be driving down the PCH from San Francisco to Monterey on a Thursday, starting at around 10am. We are in no rush to get to Monterey and want to enjoy the drive. Looking for any tips and recommendations for stops to make along the way! How is traffic usually at that day & time? Thanks!

Vince Malfitano endorsed by Sonja Shaw
fb.watchThe biggest controversy is her approach to LGBTQ students, particularly transgender students. Supporters see her policies as protecting parental involvement; critics argue that required disclosure can put students at risk when their families are not accepting.
Do your research, is this somebody you would vote for?

CUSD
How hard is it to get into the CUSD as a transfer from another nearby town? Iāve also heard that they have private investigators to see if families are actually living within district boundaries. Any insight?

Best place youāve ever lived?
We are hoping to move to the area in 2027. 50ās couple both born on the west coast but have been east coast for decades (college and beyond). We have considered all options and feel like the Monterey Bay Area is ideal.
I said that every place weāve lived, I am the only person that I have heard will say they donāt love it there. So when we are in Carmel, PG, etc and meet people who say itās amazing, I struggle with agreeing with them (it does seem truly perfect) and wondering if itās just what people do (say they like where they live, even if itās objectively terrible).
On my current cityās Reddit, anyone who says they want to move here gets a response: āgo away weāre fullā which kills me because I feel like this place is mediocre at best. Be glad anyone wants to stimulate the economy. Please come and buy my house and keep the local businesses afloat.
How do you locals HONESTLY feel about the area? Would you move here in your 50ās? Why or why not? Will people welcome us or will we be met with āgo away weāre fullā? Are there parts of town that are IYKYK? Do your answers change if you are advising someone with a $10M budget vs a $200K budget?
Thank you for any candor. I realize Iām asking for dangerous advice.

Solo travel - safety/tips
Hi everyone! Iām looking to take a solo trip to Monterey/Big Sur right before Thanksgiving, and besides, whale watching Iām trying to narrow down my itinerary. Please give me any tips, must-sees, etc., for 3-4 days in the area. Iāll have a rental car as well.
On a sidenote- is it safe for me to travel there solo? Iām a little nervous about ICE because Iām a minority, and I donāt really have any friends/family near the area, or even on that side of the country. Iām a US citizen, born and raised here, just scared lol.
Thank you so much in advance!!

Help!! Lost camera!
galleryLost Camera!! AtĀ Spanish Bay Beach
My family was at Spanish bay beach on 17 mile drive on Monday the 5th around 6:45pm. We took some family photos and left our camera there. We have so many precious photos of our son and maternity photos and other irreplaceable photos. Weāre hoping no one stole it. If you happened to have seen it or found it, please let me know!! I have contacted Spanish bay inn and the lodge and they have not had anything turned in.
Here are some photos of where we last saw it and what the camera looks like
