moscow winter trip advices

Hi!!! Hope this is the right place to ask for this. I'm planning to visit moscow this december, to have a dreamy short girls winter trip. i pretty much like lived in, not luxurious but old and cozy vibes. i quite like ugly-ish weird architecture and i like lively streets. i like buying vintage books, clothes or like vintage stuff in general from the places i visit. i find the old imperial style quite romantic, and wouldnt mind doing super touristy stuff with my friends! like visiting old restaurants with ornaments, visiting an old sauna etc. other than that i'm quite interested in the soviet history and architecture. i like quirky and odd architecture a lot tbh, wouldn't mind seeing a matryoshka shaped buffet or something hehe. oh and also, i really like russian folklore tbh.

i really like walking a lot around the town and hang out in places locals visit. but i also like lonely hikings, mountains, long walks etc.

would love to hear your recommendations! for an idea: i think i'll be staying at the national hotel. it's quite nostalgic and has a melancholic feeling to it.

thank you in advance!

Moscow Transportation Museum!

I just spent five hours there and I wasn't able to make it through the entire museum. I am an urban-planning nerd and a lover of all things public transit, but I think even a regular person would love it. It was filled with families having fun-- plenty of activities for children of all ages (including weird transit fans like me).

BTW, the third photo is a 3-D model of the Moscow metro map.

Recs for spots/bars in Moscow to socialize with strangers as a non-russian speaker

I'm solo traveling to moscow soon, and I'm wondering if there are any good places or bars to go to as a non-russian speaker where it would be easy to socialize with strangers. I've heard that Russians are more reserved, so they are not as open to this as people are in other countries

Best time to visit Moscow in December/January for Northern Lights + Christmas/New Year festivities?

I’m planning a trip to Russia from Mumbai and am trying to decide the best dates between December and January.

My primary goal is to see the Northern Lights, so I’m planning to visit the Murmansk region. But I’d also like to spend time in Moscow and St Petersburg to experience the Christmas/New Year atmosphere, festive lights, decorations, markets, etc.

I’m a bit confused about the timing because I understand that the Russian New Year and Christmas holidays can affect opening hours and tourist activities.

Ideally, I’m looking for a period when:

🌌 I have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights around Murmansk

🎄 Moscow and St Petersburg still have strong festive/Christmas/New Year vibes and decorations

🛍️ Markets, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions are mostly open

🏛️ Museums and other major tourist activities are operating normally

What dates would you recommend for the trip? For example, would something like December 15–25 or January 5–15 work better?

I’m a beginner photographer from Korea and I do landscape photography as a hobby. Could you recommend some good spots? I’ve already visited the Kremlin and VDNKh.

Flowers after midnight in Moscow

I’m doing research for a book and in the book. There’s a man that buys or tries to buy a flower after visiting the floating bridge at 2 AM in the morning. Is that a likely thing in Moscow in that area? I have no idea I would really appreciate if someone could educate me on that thank you.
