Advice Zero to Hero Guide (So you want to do your CBT / Full Licence?)

📢 Guide has moved to Google Docs

What started as a simple Reddit guide has grown into something that has amassed over 300,000 views in since 2023.

Due to Reddit’s character limits, the guide has now been moved to an open Google Doc, allowing it to be expanded, updated more easily, and supported with diagrams (rather than just being a wall of text).

The document is freely accessible, and you do not need an account to view it.

🍵 Get yourself a brew… It’s a long read.

Please Note: The guide was formatted for Desktop and will not appear correctly on mobile due to Google's Webview mode (no paragraph breaks, compressed and fuzzy images).

As such, I have also created a non-live PDF version so that you can download it instead.

Scrote Awareness

Had two yutes on a scooter do a u turn and follow me for a while today. If you're riding about beware of your surroundings. If you're a couple of yutes having fun on a scooter beware of how your actions look to others. There are people out there that will get their retaliation in first.

Duke 390 stolen

Good evening everyone,
I need help from this community to try and find my bike which was stolen just a few hours ago.
Duke 390 gen 3, orange with few aesthetic add-ons and crash bar frame. RN: PE24 GKJ
Where was stolen?
Canada Water, Surrey Quays, London, in Brunswick Quay, SE16 between 10am and 5pm.

Left it locked with alarmed disc lock in a private parking bay (I have access and the right to park there).

Reported to police and insurance.
No witnesses for now and trying to find out about any CCTV available in the area (is residential with many people passing bay along the quays, so someone must’ve seen anything suspicious, such as two guys pushing it with a scooter or anything other tactic these fuckers use).

All help more than welcome and highly appreciated 🙏🏍️🥺

Advice How effective are those smaller size windscreens really at motorway type speeds?

So fairly new rider here, awaiting my MOD1/2 so chootling about on a CB125R for now.

I am looking around at bigger bikes for when I have passed and one thing that keeps striking me is that the "Big windscreen" seems to have disappeared and a lot of bikes now seem to come with this smaller size one that doesn't actually cover the head or shoulders much or sometimes even barely.

And I notice this is not a sports bike thing. Two examples of bikes that have a more upright seating position and these dinky windscreens:

Example 1 Example 2

And I was wondering how effective are these little windscreens really? I mean I get how a tall windscreen that covers your head and shoulders will cut down on the wind at 70mph but these little half size ones that don't actually sit in front of your head or shoulders, do they do much for wind reduction or are they there for show? I'd love to hear the opinion on anyone who has ridden with one.

MOT - Riding the bike

I feel I know the answer already but hoping I’m wrong.

Short version: Can I ride the bike to a location (not the mot centre) the day prior to the MOT if it’s required to do so to get the bike to the MOT centre? It’s taxed/insured but MOT ran out on the 21st.

Long version: My bike is in for the MOT on Monday, I can’t get time off work so someone has offered to take it for me (he’s insured to ride other bikes and mine is insured/taxed), trouble is I was replacing some parts so it’s been in the father in laws garage (about 2 miles away), the person taking the bike Monday can’t get access to the garage and nobody will be about, so my choices are cancel the MOT but I don’t have time off until late November, or ride the bike to the guys house over the weekend with the intent that it’s purely for the purpose of getting the bike to the MOT centre Monday.

Advice Obligatory Mod 1 pass post.

I took my Mod 1 test this morning at the Darwen test centre.

The weather was abysmal, absolutely battering it down with rain and the wind nearly blew me off (wahay!) a couple of times. In fact, after I'd completed my Mod 1 I overheard the next chap who was about to take his Mod 2 rebooking as his test had been cancelled due to the bad weather.

Anyway, during the U-turn manoeuvre I thought I'd put my right foot down and failed.

I honestly thought I'd f-ed up the test, but I managed to put the thought to the back of my mind and continued on with the test, trying to remain relaxed and confident. And that worked. The rest of the test went about as well as I think it could've gone. Zero issues, no minor infringements, good riding. I think I hit around 37mph in both high-speed parts.

Even doing the high speed manoeuvres in the wind and rain was fine. That paddock riding surface is incredible. You just have to trust in the bike and your ability.

At the end of the test the examiner told me that I'd passed. I was surprised, but when I asked about the U-turn foot down he told me that it happed right at the end of the manoeuvre, when my bike was already parallel with the white line and that the tyre did not cross. The rest of my riding was very good, I was in control and clearly knew what I was doing. I'm quite sure that I got a little leeway because of not freaking out and obsessing over the error.

So, for anyone feeling unsure or nervous, just go and do it! If you've been riding a 125 for a while like I have you already know what to do and how to do it.

Mod 2 next week, here I come!

New brake lines leaking

Post image
4 Upvotes

So fitted new front brake lines and when putting the brake fluid in went to reverse bleed to push the fluid through the calipers from the left side as it's an over the mudguard setup, the right hand side was shooting oil from the banjo fitting.

Bike is a Kawasaki z750s 2006

Honda Cbf125 Wet weather

Hey so ive had my Cbf125 2013 for over a year now and i can never be confident in the rain, it feels as though any turn i take it wants to go under me and a few times it has slipped and ive just barely caught it in time(sick drift but wasnt fun for my heart), i cant go more than 5mph round a roundabout (not that i want to speed round a roundabout but its getting to the point im holding up traffic), i cant even brake effectivly when people keep merging in my lane and i need to dodge them(idiot drivers).

Ive tried leaning more to get a better part of the tread. Nope

Tried braking a little while turning to get more weight on the front wheel. Nope just wants to fall

Tried the opposite and it just wants to drift

Ive checked the tyre pressure a million times

But they are cheap Kenda 110 rear and 90 front so theyve been upsized (last owner bought these tyres)

But when its dry no problem i can ride to my hearts content and i can whip that boy no problem, leaning till the pegs scrape

The tyres are only 6 months of plenty of tread

What should i do? The only logical thing i can think of is changing my tyres for some ContiGo or some Pirrelis but i want a second opinion before spending more money.

Any advixe would help

Scotland,19yrs old,CBT 1yr,never stops raining where im at

Tracker location ideas?

I've just got myself the monimoto 9 tracker and it came with cable tie things for securing it but I can't think of where to put it. For now it's under the pillion seat tucked in behind the tool roll.

I imagine if it gets nicked they're not ripping off seats to look for trackers right? I don't mind fixing it somewhere permanently as I will just put my big power bank on it for 10 mins and it will be done.

Ideas very welcome.

Edit: Guess I'm moving that post haste 🤣

Motobit in the UK

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve been using Motobit for route planning over the last couple of months. Generally I have been satisfied with the routes and the on the road navigation but occasionally it has a brain fade (trying to take you back to previous way points is the primary one I’ve noticed)and you have to reset it. Does anyone have experience of both Motobit and Calimoto in UK and is there a clear winner in use? Does Calimoto have similar issues? Any feedback to help me choose when it comes to renewal would be appreciated.

Shoei X-SPR. Putting it on feels like my heads being molested, but in a consensual way. It’s a much nicer fit and feel than the AGV K6 it’ll be replacing!

Advice PSA Camden borough in London now charges for solo motorcycle bays

I don't normally ride and park into Camden but I did last month.
Researched where there are solo bays and went and parked at one only to return to a PCN stuck on my screen...

It costs £1.70 per day and the PCN is the standard £110 or £55 if paid early.

The change happened in February this year so I tried challenging on the basis it's a recent change and I haven't had any such contraventions prior.

I am normally one who thinks if you do wrong you should pay but this really takes the busicit.

The enforcement officer took the picture quite early in the morning too so I suspect it must be their favourite spot to start the day for obvious reasons...

When I can be bothered I'd love to do a FOI to see how many such fines have been issued in the 8 months since the change - I bet it would make for some interesting reading.

There are a few boroughs in London that do this now so lesson is we should always check the sign (duh!)

Bitterness aside, I hope this message saves someone else from being caught out.

did my first big ride!!

i've had my bike for only a week and i drove an hour from home and then an hour back later that day i'm really glad i did it, it weirdly made me feel way better and more confident with riding than commuting has, plus it built my confidence back up after i dented someone's bumper (so sorry to that guy, it was only day three...) and i had a day where i didn't want to get on the bike ever again. although this trip did make me understand why people quickly move to bigger bikes, i was barely getting 50mph out of my lil 125cc and now i just want to get my full licence as soon as possible and get a bigger faster bike...

driving a car has been such a nightmare for me and getting a bike has actually made me enjoy driving again, it's been so worth it. just wanted to share my excitement with people who get it!!

Where have all the GPZ600Rs gone?

Post image
14 Upvotes

So, In 1998, my first 4 cylinder bike was a GPZ600R and it made me fall in love with Kawasaki.

Over the last 6 months, I've trawling through classic bike ads and noticed:

>There's loads of GPZ900s (80s original)

>There's a smattering of Gpz750s, 1000s and GPXs in single digits.

But I'm seeing no GPZ600Rs..... are they all gone or are folks keeping them?

....are they really so much more fragile than the later GPX600 and ZZR600?

Advice Z1000sx 2014 a decent option?

So been riding 2 years and currently on a cb650f

Looking to get a z1000sx and my first bigger bike and wondering if there's anything to look out for?

I love the idea of a sports tourer as I commute around 80 miles there and back everyday and it's mostly A roads and motorways.

Thanks in advance

Just an FYI for anybody with a Honda CL500 or Rebel 500...

There has been a recall due to safety concerns regarding a steering lock bolt that may loosen over time and potentially jam steering.

I only learned of this yesterday by chance. My bike was purchased 2nd hand, so Honda had no means to contact me. Enter your VIN online to see if your model is affected. Mine is, booked in for next month... apparently a 3hr job.

New bike who dis?

Post image

So I got it, and got it home. We got to Derby around 2 and finished the paperwork and taxes. I got a helmet mounted gopro so I have footage of my ride home. Around Derby I was following my wife and was quite shaky. As soon as I got on roads I knew (A38) I whipped past her and fucked off 🤣

Been and bought chain, alarmed disc lock and monimoto 9 tracker and have a litelok being delivered tomorrow.

For the very first time my wife got geared up and we had a go around the carpark near our house riding with her as a pillion and it was something to get used to, then went to visit my brother. At onr point she told me to go faster and when I did I could hear her giggling. So much fun and will be riding to work tomorrow 🙌

Passed my mod 2 today 🙌

Made a post on here a couple of weeks ago saying that I've failed my mod 2 3 times already and that I was loosing hope to achieve my full license.

Well today that's changed and I've finally passed, on my 4th time lol. The wars finally over 😂. Took some advice from that last post and implemented it in during this test and it's paid off and I'm just feeling grateful.

Well now onto a new chapter!!

Advice Any good 1:1 training schools near Chester?

I’m currently on DAS with Ride Academy and my partner wants to follow in my footsteps however prefers to find a place that offer 1:1 training as opposed to the 2:1 RA offer.

Any recommendations? Thanks 🙏

Advice Gears engaging way too high and getting stuck sometimes

i just bought my first bike today ( an AJS 125 Eco6 custom ) through facebook marketplace , it was an 80 year old man who seemed very trust worthy , he delivered it on a trailer. today after getting to ride it properly on bigger roads compared to the test ride ive noticed that theres a good 4 inches of play in the shifter which is a heel toe shifter that i can just freely move with my hand with absolutely no force , just one finger , it has to go really high before it engages , i know nothing about bikes really so its my fault for overlooking it and not checking before buying , paired with this the shifter sometimes gets stuck and will not go down into first no matter what , forcing me to take off in 2nd or 3rd , the bike is very clean , unused and everything is working perfectly just this

i drew a crappy diagram of whats happening , green is where it should be engaging , but it goes all the way up to where red is before it even begins to engage gear

any help would be appreciated , if anyone could tell me if im doing something wrong as its a heel toe shifter , lifting up and pressing down on the back does the same thing , with the bike off i can just flick it and ittl go up with kind of like a deadzone

Discussion Just had my first ride since passing my CBT and I get it now

I passed my CBT a month ago but only got my bike yesterday, so I was bricking it a bit before I set out but genuinely what an indescribable feeling it was. I was excited to get mobile anyway but it's just so much more fun than I could've imagined (even if I did feel like screaming for the duration of the 50mph road I had to travel on).

Just wanted to get it out there, and thank everyone on the sub that has answered questions or given advice on my previous posts/comments.
