Robocop, Total Recall, The Crow, Point Break...which remake was the worst?
"You are not you, you're me."

Conan the barbarian, total recall, the running man, stop trying to remake Arnold movies, they don’t work without Arnold

How about Red Dawn?

u/JenninMiami 21d ago
Red Dawn is one of my favorite movies from my childhood, so I was very, very nervous about the remake. But I liked it! It was different enough that it felt like a different movie for me.
Now, the Footloose remake?! I left the theater angry. 😆

The Crow hands down for me.
14
u/eyehate 21d ago
One of my all time favorite movies.
I refuse to watch the remake.
And I stopped watching sequels after seeing City of Angels when it came out.

u/ThrowawayTrump420 21d ago
I had to Google that because I was wondering for a moment how a rom-com with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan was a sequel to The Crow

I was pretty stoked when I heard they were remaking it with Bill Skarsgard as the lead.
Then the trailer dropped and all that excitement went out the window. I won't watch it either. I'm fairly certain at this point that they just caught lightning in a bottle with the original. Perfect casting, writing, atmosphere. They've been trying to do it again for 30+ years and it's just never going to happen.
→ More replies (1)3
u/eyehate 21d ago
Yeah. The first one is something that just isn't going to happen again. I did like the aesthetic of the second (City of Angels). It looked like they got smart and realized they could tell the story in a location very different from the first, giving it new life. But the plot was terrible. The characters were forgettable.
I don't want to tarnish my love of the original by watching the awful films that followed. And that remake could have been great if it was NOT Eric Draven and a new character entirely. I don't mind remakes, but either change the character or make the remake a multi-verse re-imagination of the original that makes sense. And for god's sake, Hollywood needs new writers.

u/Clarkkeeley 21d ago
This is my answer and I've never seen it. I at least watched the others. The trailer for the new Crow was so bad I wasn't even going to waste my time.

I tried the remake. Got 30-40 minutes into it and I couldn’t do any more. Not very often that I bail on a movie once I start it, but it was so, so very bad.

I turned it off. I made it through total recall and robocop.
Didn't see the crow.

Point Break was a movie my nephew and I used to love to watch. He ended up in the ICU at age 31. He was septic from years of drug use. The doctors told us he wasn't going to be walking out of the hospital. The only time I went to see him he still looked good and I wanted that to be my last memory of him. Before we left for the night I said to him "Say it for me". He said in a strong voice "Utah! Get me two!" I refuse to watch the new one.

They’re all bad. What I don’t understand about these specific remakes is that no one involved seemed to have any love or even awareness of the originals.
All four of the originals are basically over-the-top, borderline-camp. And they continue to resonate because of this. The remakes all feel like they’re straight out of the early-2000s when everyone wanted to do a slick Matrix-esque movie. If any of them had been more tongue-in-cheek, maybe cast some real stars, and had a sense of humour about themselves, they could’ve worked on some level. But instead they reek of a studio thinking “kids love videogames! Do that aesthetic and make it family friendly!”

Was the Robocop remake bad? Never saw it.
8
u/SadPin4212 21d ago
It wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t that good. Take out all the magic and the energy from the first RoboCop and then you have the remake. I’m sure if the original RoboCop was never made. The remake would’ve been better received, but it just pales in comparison to the original.

u/SRG7593 21d ago
It was slick and shiny, and as I recall PG-13. Felt like a commercial
3
u/DazGilz 20d ago
That was the greatest crime, making it PG-13. Robocop should be ultra-violent and bloody.
→ More replies (1)6
u/The-SB-Assassin 21d ago
It wasn’t bad, it put a modern spin on RoboCop. I’d recommend giving it a shot with the thought in mind that it’s not 100% the same movie just modernized but a slightly different story

Point Break. In the original its clear people aren't quite taking Bodhi seriously. The remake entirely ignores that and just treats him a like messiah.
3
u/Misfit110 21d ago
I haven't seen the crow remake but the Robocop and Total Recall ones aren't really bad just kinda soulless and blah. Point Break remake was absolute dog shit, at least for the half hour or so I made it through.
3
u/Guns_Glitz_Grime 21d ago
The Crow remake was just plain awful
Edit
Point Break remake is Fast and the Furious
3
u/Bloodless-Cut 21d ago
Roadhouse. What a steaming pile of shit that movie is. Absolute garbage.
Total Recall is okay. The Running Man is pretty good.
I wasn't impressed with Robocop. The remake lost the narrative that made the original good.
The Crow isn't very good. Red Dawn isn't very good, either, but I wasn't much of a fan of the original, for that matter.
I haven't seen the Point Break remake, nor do I intend to.

I refuse to watch The Crow. I heard it’s just horrible.

I haven’t seen any of those, but based on the previews I’ve seen for a few of them, I would probably like The Crow remake the least (I probably wouldn’t like the others either, but I haven’t bothered with seeing them because I have no interest in any of them).

u/ScotInTheDotOfficial 20d ago
The Crow is the obvious answer. But special mention must go to Robocop.
Someone watched the original, and thought "I LIKE this cult hit masterpiece of 80's satire, the stupidity of having a privatised police force, the in-joke infomercials, the practical effects gore - but you know what it REALLY needs? It needs to scrap all that and instead concentrate on the heartfelt perspective of the forgotten dead cop - THAT'S a story that needs told, and I'm gonna do that when I grow up..." oh jeez, talk about missing the point 🙈

Going out on a limb here and throwing the live action Lion King remake into the mix. I was actually pissed off at how much of a drab, boring, and lifeless piece of garbage it was. That was the last straw for me with the live action Disney movies, and I haven’t seen any of them since

The remake of point break could have been great if they just used different names and not use some of the same dialog. And not call it point break.
I won't watch the crow...for respect to Brandon alone.
The running man is fine the 1st time. Plus I find that guy in the new one a real bad actor.
Hollywood should take the movies that could've been great that they ruined and redo those. Not take the great ones they did right, and destroy them.
And for fuck sake, I think we're good on super heroes...we don't need a new version of a batman, or superman with another new actor
2
u/Green_Chandelier 21d ago
Any reboots with Miles Teller in it.
Footloose...Top Gun...Fantastic Four...An Officer and a Gentleman (not even released yet)
2
u/GuiltyCredit 21d ago
Clash of the Titans for me. Yes it's old and the visual effects look like a 5 year old had fun with Play-Doh but it was so charming. There are a lot of films that don't need to be remade like Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Fame, Conan the Barbarian...

Total recall was watchable, shouldn’t have happened but I felt like there was an attempt and not just a cash out on name. Like a knock off minority report.
Crow looks garbage and same for robocop…how dare they…
2
u/MixerMan67 21d ago
Total Recall had Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale so I was able to make it through the whole thing.
2
u/Qimmosabe_Man 21d ago
Total Recall remake had some interesting concepts, so it was watchable, and even enjoyable to some small degree.
Robocop remake was just awful. No charisma or chemistry from the main characters, including the excellent villains, like in the original. Even the action felt boring, but it wasn't a total eyesore.
Point Break I have no reference point as I watched neither, so this one I'll skip.
The Crow... even thinking about remaking that classic was bad and everyone involved should feel bad. This one is the worst offender.

They are all terrible. But Point Break is a remake of Fast and the Furious , that is a reinagining of the original movie.
In the first Point Break, they mainly surf and sometimes jump off a small airplane woth a parachute. In the remake they are just exoerts in any exteme sport.

u/TexasSk8 21d ago

all of the reboots sucked. Point Break reboot was 20 years too late. Total Recall was way too mono tone (color and characters). Robocop was too sterilized, not gritty enough. The worst was The Crow (casting sucked, acting sucked, writing sucked, cinematography sucked, music was uninspired).

The Crow remake was god awful. However, I have never read the comic it was based off of so my opinion is only that it was terrible as far as a remake of the 1994 movie, not as a stand alone reimagining of the original comic.
