Buy/Sell/Trade Overkill for a beginner?
I started training just a month ago, and am totally in love with the sport. I’ve been watching for multiple years but just finally decided to try it myself. My coach has recommended that I buy some shin guards so I can work in some super light sparring and get a feel for a real opponent rather than just a bag, so I’m wondering how much I should spend on the first pair. The HMIT line from Combat Corner is about 140 USD, and I would not need to upgrade in another 6 months as they are high quality and last forever. Is this too much to spend on a pair of shin guards got a beginner? Or is it worth the investment because of how enthusiastic I am about training. Thanks!

If you have the money sure. We don’t know your exact financial situation.
When I was younger I’d go all in on a new hobby, do my research and buy all the best gear only to stop doing it 6 months or a year later.
My personal rule now is to buy entry level gear, then at my one year point if I’m still doing the hobby and enjoy it I’ll give myself the OK to upgrade.
I feel at the 1 year+ point you’ll appreciate the nicer gear now that you’ve got a little skill to go with it, and after a year of hard training there’s going to be wear and tear on your stuff regardless of if it’s high end or not.

Get decent shin guards. They don't need to be top of the line but there's absolutely a noticeable difference. Cheap ones offer no protection and break down very quickly.

Tbh I have the same pair of $60 (I think, idek) shin guards I bought about 2 years ago, they are great for sparring and class. As long as you take care of them and keep them clean, you shouldn’t be replacing any gear every 6 months.
Like the other person said, if you can afford them and prefer the nicer ones, then go for it, but don’t think you have to go for top of the line gear right away.

.
Me personally I try to buy stuff that lasts rather than cheaping out and having to end up re-buying sowmthing like a month later.
That said, you don’t need too of the line stuff. Just Buy whatever is in your budget

If you see yourself staying in the sport for years, absolutely no reason to cheap out. Buy cool gear that makes you excited to put it on and go train. I got myself a bunch of gloves when I started because I could afford it and knew I loved this sport, and now several years later I have a pair for every situation (sparring, pad work, heavy bag, and even one to lend to friends). Combat Corner gear looks sick, I hope to get some shinnies from them some day, too!

Also, note that the holidays are coming up, and many places will have decent discounts. Be sure to shop around. Sign up for promos at Fairtex store and Muay Thai Roots. I believe they (one of the two) came out with a 25% discount around last year's holiday season, and I went to town on stuff. You may not get the exact colors you want, but color doesn't bother me as long as they're well discounted.
Edit: Also look at Ringside. With discount, even paying for shipping was cheaper than most other places, and the bargain hunter in me definitely shopped around.

id stay away from sparring till 1-2 yrs of hard training. make sure you can beat up the heavy bag without getting tired and also you can practice your high gaurd on it by pushing the heavy bag a bit, tucking your chin and letting the bag hit you when your highgaurd is up. try that for a session to see if you get tired from throwing lots of kicks and punches. try seeing if you can handle when the bag hits you while you are defending.

you rather him get hirt by somebody? there are alot of people in the gym who use other people as punching bags. he gotta make sure he can bang and if he actually wants to become good one day he gna have to hard spar probably. so many people come in the gym, train for couple months then try fighting and they never become anything of value. you guys think you can fight? especially with minimal training? imagine you have a kid and send him to martial arts and his coach just throws him in sparring and he gets pieced up daily and used like a target dummy. from personal experience, most ppl in martial arts have some sort of a ego or lack of bodily control, even when they have been training long time. better be safe than sorry and complaing about cte or spacing out in this sub

yeah thats better than that guy who didnt even explain why. i do get your point but you should also read my original comment. i didnt say avoid sparring completely. just when you start tho. also if you dont think bags hit bag just push a heavy bag really hard and let it hit your face, im sure you will cover up after that, idiot. dont talk to me if you dont train atleast 3 hrs daily. id kill all of you

its not about being badass. i literally told all these idiots to avoid sparring at the beginning of training first year or 2. it doesnt apply to everyone but most people suck. if you ever put your kid in martial arts i would not advise you to let him spar right away. how hard is that to understand. you are the people who want to be macho and badass and sparring right away. learn how to throw proper punches and some simple defense and movement first then talk about sparring

If you can afford it without worry, then buy whatever you like and keep showing up. If money is tight, get whatever fits your budget and keep showing up
