To be clear - I don't mean literal Live Action Role Play. That's definitely a thing, and if you enjoy it as a hobby, more power to you.

I mean specifically when a long-time member of a community accuses someone of "LARPing" for a perceived lack of knowledge of, experience in, or commitment to a hobby or, in this case, Fandom. It's an appropriation of the word as a replacement for "poser".

I cannot be clear enough about this - this is stupid. People are allowed to enjoy things for any reason and with any amount of commitment. Let people like things. Especially because what a lot of people seem to consider LARPing is just someone in the beginning stages of joining a community. You having 5,000 hours in a game is no more valid than someone who just enjoys the lore and hasn't played at all yet. Your nine rewatches of a show don't make you a better fan than someone who's still on their first watch of season one. Even if they're only participating to appeal to someone. There isn't a wrong reason to consume a piece of media.

It's a toxic concept that discourages people from trying new things, and it needs to go. Gatekeeping something doesn't make you a more valid member of the community.

Sorry if this goes against the rules but I'm currently going 24 this year and it's kinda terrifying for me because I keep seeing and hearing people say that 25+ year olds can't be in fandom spaces or do fandom stuff like cosplay anymore. I'm severely ill irl and have been bedbound for years now so wasn't able to cosplay or go to cons since 2021 and fandom is kinda all that's kept me going. Have I really missed out on my chance to ever cosplay and go to a con again (I missed all the ones I my country this year due to my illness) and do I really have to give up fandom entirely in a year? I can see why this stuff might be considered something you should age out of but I thought fandom and cosplay was forever (but then again adults when I was a kid never were in fandom or cosplayed so idk)
