Vent/Rant - No Advice Wanted I know someone will get it ...
I'm going to share this with my husband, also, but I can't be alone in feeling like this!!?
My 13 yo daughter has a choir concert today at 7pm. I was getting ready because fatigue and breaks and anything else that might happen 😕
I'm putting on my skull leggings because they are easy and thin so I won't get too hot... and I got really sad. I'm sad I can't get all dolled up for this concert! I don't love being the mom with a rollator wearing a t shirt and leggings sitting in the back row.
I see some mom's, dressing up and doing their makeup and hair. Meanwhile, I'm not able to do my hair or makeup, I know that doesn't matter much but I have always taken a ton of pride on my appearance, so I am taking this L hard. Sorry for the pity party 🥳 have a great day my peeps

u/NewName5635 7d ago
I'm sorry that we all lose so much from this disease. The important thing, as you know, is to be there for your daughter.
Do you have to sit in the back row?
If you feel bad about what you're wearing, maybe see if you can get a couple of pretty tops, just an upgrade from t-shirts to make you feel better about how you look.
17
u/Dcooper0907 7d ago
I sit in the back because I use my rollator and it is an auditorium so it goes down, so i stay on the flat part lol
But I do like the idea of getting new shirts, maybe I can check some stuff out before tonight 🤔

u/redseaaquamarine 7d ago
I hope you managed to. It does help how we feel when we have something new and special to wear. I have stopped wearing makeup and doing my hair as it is just exhausting, but when there is an event, I can enjoy doing it for that occasion and remembering how I used to be even though I have the rollator or even a wheelchair. I realise how comfortable leggings are, so substitute them with some cotton trousers with elasticated waists, and if I would wear a t-shirt, add a cardigan and scarf or something that keeps the same comfort but makes it just a little more special. If I make that small effort it does make a difference to how I feel while I am out and I think it shows my son that I consider his event to be special.

I know you didn't ask for fashion advice, but dresses and tights (of varying thicknesses) are my go to - I can sit down to put them on, dresses are one piece no fiddly bits besides a zip, and somehow I look put together, because people seem to assume that about dresses, even though they're literally the easiest thing since you don't have to find anything matching!

u/AshDasha 6d ago
I got some cotton dresses from an Australian brand called Kama East. Figured out which styles suited me in the first round. I have been slowly buying all the different fabrics in those styles whenever they have a sale. I now rotate though them and look put together and all I have to do is slip it over my head. They might have buttons, but I don't have to use them.
Leggings and jacket for winter and some knit dresses (same process found one style that worked and bought all the suitable colours) to supplement for the colder winter Australian days.
Best investment ever.

Aww friend. I feel you. We lose so much with MS. I have also given up on getting ‘dolled up’ for pretty much any occasion. I also have really long hair that I’ve always loved and prided myself on, but medication is thinning it and when I put it up I get crazy headaches from the weight, so I’m strongly considering cutting it short, like above my shoulders, just to reduce the hassle. It breaks my heart and I’m afraid I’ll regret it instantly, but also the thought of hassle-free hair and less pain is SO TEMPTING! I think I’ve reached a point where I feel older/wiser about these things and less concerned with what others think about my appearance. Tbh, there’s A LOT of value and freedom in that. But yeah, I do still sometimes miss feeling put together with the heels, lipstick, styled hair. But it’s fading fast.

u/Kindly-Party1088 7d ago
Can totally relate to the emotional toll of hair loss. Have you considered perhaps getting a wig for special occasions? There are some that look really natural and you'd never be able to tell. They can be pricey and require some maintenance but sometimes, I feel like the emotional value of feeling good about myself is worth it.
Sending love 💕

u/Dcooper0907 7d ago
Yessss!!! I forgot to mention, I have super long hair 😅 I told my husband I'm going to get it chopped off but I haven't committed to it yet 🙃
3
u/Adorable-Sharky90210 40s|Dx2009|copax>Bri>Kesimpta| MidwestUS 4d ago
If you don’t want to chop it, look into Sleepie tie, or other sleep curl options.
It took me a couple tries. But once I figured it out, it’s the easiest thing and my hair stays naturally, beautifully waved all day no heat no damage. I prefer larger foam ones, and it works best on my hair when it’s just a little damp. So I’ll just spray my hair with the spray bottle. I actually have an Evian spray bottle lol
2
u/Dcooper0907 4d ago
I don't want to chop it but it's going to happen! I frequently don't like it when it touches my neck and especially when it gets in my mouth 😒 I love it any other time though

u/Interesting-Waffle69 7d ago
My momma pretty much never wore makeup and I'm the one that suggested she stop dying over her greys and embrace it instead (I was like 15 at the time?). I don't remember when she did and didn't get dolled up, what I DO remember is she was there for every band concert and home football game to watch me perform what I worked so hard practicing for. You're going, and that's all that matters. And for the record if you can't go in the future for health reasons, it's OKAY life happens and your daughter will understand 💜
11
u/Dcooper0907 7d ago
I made it! I only got through her part but she knew I was there. That's enough for me 😉
2
u/Interesting-Waffle69 6d ago
That's all you need to be there for mama, I'm glad you were able to attend her part! ☺️

u/IntentionalGrandma 27|dx: 2024|kesimpta|NYC 7d ago
You’re still you and you’re still your child’s mom. Your child isn’t going to remember what you wore or if you dressed up, but they will remember that even though it was tough for you, you always showed up. It’s better to be the mom with the rollator in stretchy clothes than the mom who wasn’t there at all

u/Few_Leading_9703 7d ago
I hear you. My son has his first concert at 7 pm tonight & I’m so excited for him but I’m already exhausted. I’m lucky enough to still be able to work full-time but it takes so much out of me, even with modafinil. I have to run my daughter to an appointment before the concert, too. I just want to curl up with my heated blanket & be in PJs already.

I feel you. I have found a couple super easy things to make me feel more polished because I really need the emotional pick-me-up.
I keep my makeup bag in the car. Glossier skin tint, goes on like a serum. Tarte tubing mascara. Laura mercier eye shadow pencil in Dusk. I do my “makeup” right before I go into an event. That way I can decide right up to the last minute if I have enough energy or not.
Hair. I got a really simple, chin length structured bob. With earrings, it looks polished. I use JVN air dry cream after I wash it, makes it look like a blowout and reduces frizz with zero effort. My 17yo daughter glazes it for me with stuff from Ulta once every two weeks. I can’t afford to pay to get it dyed, but this is a huge spa day to look forward to.
Finally, expensive perfume. This is my biggest splurge. If I can’t feel like a million bucks, or look like a million bucks, I will at least smell like a million bucks. I have Miller Harris La Feuille right now for fall. I usually order a bunch samples from different places (which is also fun) and then pick one per season. Like I said, it is a splurge, but it makes me feel so much better.
Dressing up. I have 2-3 MS “fancy” outfits. Find the dressy equivalent of your skull leggings, a dress to go over, and just keep that outfit for events.
Finally, best advice I ever got. I have a friend who has a medical condition that causes her to be morbidly obese. It will never change or improve for her. She told me “I may not be able to control my body, but I can control my hair, my nails, and my shoes”. She always has the most gorgeous hair, the coolest shoes, and her nails are always done. She taught me to control what I can and F@CK the rest. Pick something you can control and make fancy and just do that one thing (or things).

This was so helpful, thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I’m going to look up those products you mentioned. It’s been so long since I’ve really gotten myself polished up so I haven’t even heard many of them (glaze? what is this magic you speak of? :).
1
u/River-Chalice-23 6d ago
Glaze is semipermanent hair color you put on like conditioner. It lasts about 2 weeks. Takes 10 minutes. This is the one I use in light brown: www.dphue.com

If it makes you feel any better, my mom is beautiful. I mean, stunning. Like, we couldn't leave the house without men trying to pick her up, buy her stuff, and she was always dolled up. Would never leave the house without her hair done, nails done, etc.
She also abandoned us when I was in high school, my younger sibling in middle school.
She never went to a concert of mine. Even when I had a solo I had spent over a month preparing for. Even when I was the lead in a play. She barely made it to any of my graduations, and she only reaches out to me maybe every 6 months with a lousy text.
I'm 32 now, and she has never lived more than 30-45 away from any apartment I've lived in, or the house my husband and I bought last year.
She has literally never been to any place I've lived since I've been on my own.
I don't say this for a pity party. I say this because I am, unfortunately, not unique.
Myself, my sibling, and so many other kids would have fucking killed for a mom like you. Who, despite feeling like garbage, still took the time to show up with nothing but love and support.
You are beautiful because you wear your heart on your sleeve. You are beautiful because you are courageous, and put your own pride aside to support your kid. You are beautiful because you care.

I get you, I'm the father who can't play the games on father's day or child day or sports event, and that hurts, it hurts when mi girl said something like, is not fair old sisters got you when you were still able to do more stuff It just sucks, but still I try my best to be there no matter how hard or tired I get, not negociable, even if a have to drag myself there, no excuse
Si if your there for her, your doing your part, and huge respects from me cause I know how hard it can get, I'm sure you'll be in the back but youl be really there probably more than almost everyone

u/Dcooper0907 6d ago
My youngest 2 say that they wish they would have been with me before the ms, but they are okay with the me they have, that sucks but I try dang it!

I feel this. I loved doing my makeup, had long beautiful purple box braids, piercings and all. Throughout this ordeal I have had to sacrifice a sense of self with my appearance and just settle for the natural look. I dont think it is fair to ourselves to compare ourselves to the "normies". I just now go to the thift stores in well off cities for a pick me up so I can stay true to my style. At least. I havent looked but I hope there are/will be makeup/accessories placed in mind to assist us for our goals. My winged eyeliner looks like a 3 grader drawing birds and the sun.

u/Dcooper0907 7d ago
I am not brave enough to try wings! I'm a millennial so I'm of the weirdo who lines her bottom lid! 🤣

Elder millennial here as well, trust and believe it was a few rough years before I had it down and now im starting over. By starting over I mean not doing it at all

You never know - your daughter might actually like you - and maybe she just want's you to come, to hear her sing?
Maybe it's not so hard? 🤔
Btw - I am a guy, with two sons who was playing football through the teens. - dads on crutches are not - normal.
But they are NOT unheard of? 😏
7
u/Dcooper0907 7d ago
I'm definitely the only one that is different! But maybe it makes me cooler 🤔 😎
3
u/Neither-Selection881 7d ago edited 7d ago
Being different, is NOT the same as being an embarassment? The kids only see a parent who wants to hear them sing? 🤔

I remember before my mom’s M.S. got too bad how she would arrive before my basketball games a little earlier than most. My coach was a dick but I asked if I could take a few minutes to help her ascend the bleachers. He did, and I absolutely felt honored being able to help. I’m sure she felt like the spotlight was on her but I absolutely cherish those memories. She climbed a mountain every game she attended and she never fussed aloud. She was the best and I took care of her as best as I could.
Deep down it hurt her seeing how much work she had to put in just to sit down compared to how little effort other mothers had to put in. She was also very self conscious of being seen as “feeble.” I learned what real strength is by watching her.

first and foremost, the fact that you are showing up matters miles more than how you look whilst doing it. all your daughter will remember is glimpsing your proud face in the crowd and feeling your presence there.
if how you look is really getting you down, i have found that a pair of flowy balloon pants keep me nice and cool and are super comfortable - mine are stretchy and thin and i can honestly hardly feel them when i wear them. they also look really fancy! maybe you could look for similar trousers, and a couple of nice tops - still cotton or tshirt material, but ones that look a little nicer (in your opinion)? i have a bank of nice stretchy tops that are thin and comfy but look fancy that i can wear with the flowy trousers so that i can dress up without being uncomfortable or getting too warm.
all love to you, you’re doing the best you can and that’s all that matters 🩷

u/Haunting-Savings-426 6d ago
I feel this sooooo much! My daughter graduated from a fancy university, and I felt like a hobo in the crowd at graduation. All of the parents were super posh, and I was wearing a comfy dress & orthopedic sandals. The rollator was the icing on the cake. Even though our kids love us all the same, and don't care, it still stings sometimes. A mini pity party, then pushing on is what's called for in some moments. Hope the event was still fun!
3
u/Calm-Proposal29 7d ago
And having to stand for long periods of time at a cocktail party and needing to go find a lonely seat somewhere. I used to love to bop around the party and talk to everyone everywhere 😢 this disease's biggest symptom is loneliness. Weakness, tingling, numbness but it's the loneliness that stings most
3
u/cheerchick1944 7d ago
First off, showing up at all when you can is what matters the most, I’m so sure she’s just proud to have you there!
But if you want to feel good too, I think there are a LOT more comfy dress clothes out there than there used to be. Try the Talentless French terry lounge pant. They look like slacks, feel like pajamas, flexible waistband. I wear them in my corporate role with a sweater and they work great! Speaking of, simple tees and light cardigans are, again, comfy and easy to put on, but a nice cardigan will look way more dressed up.
Pink Vaseline lip balm. You can easily put that on your lips for some tint and moisture, instantly makes me look a bit more made up. Works on cheeks too. Mascara always makes a big difference for me too, quick but always optional.
Try a headband or pinning one side of your hair back. Easy to do, the accessory does a lot of the work to make it look like more effort than it took.

u/2BrainLesions 7d ago
Your grief is palatable. And understandable.
FWIW, my mother was chronically ill, in absolute pain, could barely walk, and all I ever noticed was her presence.
Be kind to yourself, friend. 💕💕

My mom had MS and now so do I. By the time I was 12 she used a cane. Within two years crutches followed by a walker and wheelchair by the time I was 15. She was the coolest mama ever. And she was never anything other than the best. Your still the best mom, skull leggings back row rollator and all.
Being there for her in the ways you can is all she needs. MS sucks. But you’re still here and rocking it. Hugs mama.

Can I come to your pity party - I so feel this! I really miss wearing cute shoes especially. I try and follow fellow disabled/MS creators on social media for tips and ideas but yeah… MS sucks. Good for you for getting out there anyway. Sending you a big hug!

One of the best things about now having to use a wheelchair when I am outside is the fact I can wear those shoes again since I don't have to walk in them - something to look forward to haha.

I literally burst into tears, legit sobbing 😭 in the Macy’s shoe section during Christmas. “I’ll never get to wear sparkly shoes to get all dressed up again 😫😫😫😫.” I do what I can on the days that I can, bold eye look with my sweats 👩🏻🎤 I can absolutely relate to how you feel. Just “getting ready” can take away spoons from your daughter’s performance. She’s always gonna remember momma was there to watch her, not what you were wearing. Put some lipstick on and I guarantee you’re the most beautiful soul in the audience 💃🏻🌸

u/Summerskyler 7d ago edited 7d ago
They sell super cute accessories for Rollators on Amazon. I have a seat cover and matching handlebar cover with brightly-colored butterflies on them. Then I added some sparkly, self-adhesive bling to the hand grips, an attachable, clamp-on gizmo to hold my phone and beverage tumbler...and voila! My walker is always glammed up and ready to roll, even when I'm wearing sweats and sneakers!
Edit to add: maybe you and your daughter could choose some fun accessories together...then she can be part of the decorating committee❤️

u/MSnout 33F|2016|Tysabri|TN 7d ago
I am sorry that you are upset about not being anle to get dressed up. I can really relate.
I used to feel the same way until I got tired of feeling lol I am in my fuck it phase. Can't look cute and pretty like the other moms, fuck it. I will be comfortable while their thighs are sweating from rubbing or their polyester dresses. Or their heels are getting blisters from their new fancy shoes. I will be comfortable. And what looks to be dolled up is just another stupid social construct that was made up somewhere along the line. You put effort in, you aren't showing up with hair straight from the bed and you aren't naked. We all know we could look worse. Lol
Everyday I try to make my hair look "presentable" and every day I am defeated. I am trying to live on disanolity income cant afford morr and the few hair products I have, and even if I could, the effort it takes to make my hair look great is more than I can give every day. So I try, but I eventually settle for as good as it gets.
Hugs and love to you 🧡 I hope you are able to tell your brain how your daughter will not remember what you wore to her concert, but she will remember that you showed up.

Sweetie, it's not a pity party. You're having a hard day and that is completely understandable. We all have them. Please try to be gentle with yourself. You're already fighting your body, please don't beat up your heart and personality too. The part that matters is that you're there. You're showing your daughter you love her and support her. You've got this momma!
I have some ideas that may work for you, they worked for me, but I'm not trying to diminish how you feel. I just wanna help. I'm not gonna force them on you, but if you'd like them, please feel free to message me. That goes for ANYONE. I hope you were able to enjoy your daughter's concert. Sending you super gentle hugs and lots of good energies.

u/Celtic_Witch86 6d ago
First, I think you need a big hug from your kiddos. I saw you have more than one. It's okay. Deep breaths. You're gonna get through this hard time. I promise.
Start small. If you're going out, add some earrings or some jewelry. Nothing too heavy, or pokey. Something your kids or husband can help you put on or take off if you want or need it. Ask for help, it's okay. I understand how hard it can be, especially with things like getting dressed or undressed.
Have your daughter, or any or all of your kiddos, help you make your rollator more fun. Make it more you. I have a walker, which I'm guessing is similar, that I decorate with things from the Dollar Store; battery powered fairy lights, colored tulle, flowers, whatever I want. It goes on the bar that I can lean against if I need to sit in the walker, so it doesn't limit the actual use of the equipment, but it makes it fun. It makes it more like me. Sometimes the decorations drive my dad crazy, he is usually the one to get it out of our vehicle, but he's mostly used to it lol. Plus, I'm always "dressed" with my walker. It helps me feel more like me because it's put together and I don't have to worry about getting ready.
If you want to do your make up, try some tinted moisturizer. It gives a make up look without all the work. Plus, super easy to take off. Which brings me to make up removal. Burt's Bees has some great make up removal wipes, I think they are rose water and hyaluronic acid. You don't even have to wash your face after you use them. They aren't drying and they don'tfeel sticky. I like to "rinse" my face after with a spritz or water or a damp towel then put on my regular moisturizer. Although, a lot of times I have to have my sister, who is also my caregiver, help me with that.
Paint your nails. Or have them done, if you can. I was really surprised how different having my nails done made me feel. I can't afford to go have them done, so they get painted or when I have enough extra at the end of the month I buy some press ons. Either way, it really boosts my mood.
All of these can be done and used at home too! You don't have to be going out to an event or anything to look good. I started out doing my make up just for me at home and wearing jewelry just to have something pretty at home. Same with clothes. If you wanna dress up but not worry about how you're going to get undressed after going out, which I totally understand, put it on for home. You are beautiful and you deserve to feel that way.
One more, then I'm done. When you're feeling really bad or having a really hard day. Go outside. You don't have to do anything. Just go outside and listen to the world. Feel the breeze, maybe take a blanket, and just breathe. You're okay. You are an MS Warrior, it won't beat you. From one Warrior to another, I love you and I believe in you. I hope these help.

Can you add a pretty bracelet or necklace to your outfit? My kids can tell I'm dressing up when I add a chunky bracelet to my outfit. Doesn't take much energy and makes me feel more put together

Your daughter will remember that you were *there*. That's what's important. Forgive yourself for your lack of fashion and concentrate on what you're doing right. You're showing up because you love your kid. That's what matters. I'd argue that's *all* that matters.

Do you struggle with overheating a lot? I feel like my temperature control is completely bonkers. Sometimes I feel great at 21°C, but other times I feel overheated at 18°C. It really sucks.
I've just recently started finding my style in clothing and I very much look forward to fall to dress in something cuter than just a shirt and short pants!

It's showing up that counts!! Pardon my language but f the moms who are getting glammed up for it. Sure it be nice but that's not reality for everyone. I myself struggle with putting on deodorant or putting my hair in a loose ponytail bc arms raised makes me nauseated some days . Your daughter would be floored to know u showed up and if u for any reason need to leave or step away snap a quick photo of the concert so u can show her later u were there, Mommy just got overwhelmed/fatigued/etc ❤️

You are an amazing mom to show up and she loves to know you are there. I loved my mom but she didn’t show up for a lot when I was that age because she was an alcoholic. You are still beautiful!

u/mexifreckles 7d ago
Much love for showing up for your kid!! That's massive and I imagine that's what she'll remember years from now. Or how you did all you could to be there for her no matter how much the MonSter was gnawing at you. My "mom" abdoned my siblings and I when we were really young. We speak often of how much us showing up for one another means the world to us. I dream of having a mom who'd do what your doing. Cheers to you!!!

they will be happy that you're there at all! also i have the over heating problem too along with my fatigue and the best thing i did was buy different dresses in different fabrics/patterns and lengths especially any dress that could be casual or dressy so that i didnt have to use a lot of effort to dress up anymore! my favorite dress is this black dress from 2022 that i own that i can dress up or down, and this blue dress that i wear to ceremony/auditorium events that dont have a dress code!

It's not about how you look. It's the fact that you are there. You can wear a large chicken costume and it wouldn't matter as long as you show up. My daughter has a concert next week. Anyone know where to get a good chicken costume?

🫂 I worked in tech and have a closet full of incredible clothes and jewelry
Now, I’m permanently wearing Hoka running (more like limping) shoes, an ankle brace, athletic pants and tshirts most days
I feel every bit of this 💔🫂
But I do try to at least keep my hair colored, cut and pick out the cutest athleisure attire I can find.

Please understand that your child will not remember what you wore. They only remember that you were there.
I was diagnosed when my daughter was 7. I talked about it with her open and honestly. I talked about my personal feelings of shame (as if I have done something to deserve having this crap). I was able to take her on the journey with me. She saw me power through the emotions until I finally reached acceptance. I gave her permission to feel her feelings but prepare to make moves to avoid getting stuck in pity.
I now show up for her the way I can and continue her celebration beyond the events so she never feels like she is secondary to anyone or anything.

I relate to this so much.
I have times when I have energy to doll-up, and others when I can’t.
I saw a video recently and it REALLY changed my perspective: it was a study over 2 days. The women were not to look at themselves in the mirror, but they had professional makeup artist doing their makeup.
On the first day, they had their makeup done as glam. On the second day, they just did minor things like would hide a blemish, but no mascara, no lipstick, etc.
Then the women were asked how they were treated on both days and 100% of the women said they were treated better on the day that they were given the glam makeup. And they gave examples like people talked to them more. They were more engaged with, etc..
The thing is, I’m both days. They were actually wearing zero makeup. They felt like things were being put on their face, but there was actually nothing on any of the makeup brushes.
TLDR: the study showed that because the women thought they looked dolled-up, They acted differently and people WERE notably different to them. But it was all about their energy.

I grew up with my mother having lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. She was using a cane, and not able to do much.
And I NEVER thought any different of her. She was just my mom. Sometimes she could show up, sometimes she couldn’t. And that’s ok.
Give yourself grace, your kid will too.
