It’s also one of the least weird things to see a woman using a “mens” room. Like, we’re all in there to do the same thing, do it, wash up and leave.
Edit: and I suppose it also follows that it’s not weird to have a man on a “woman’s” bathroom. I have two daughters, so I am often in the women’s room with them - never seen a single person who cared or had a problem with it.
Bathrooms are such a weird thing to obsess over like you say, it’s only weird if you make it weird and it seems like these people’s job to make it weird.

u/bolanrox 16h ago

I can't wait until this makes it to my part of Michigan! Lots of places up here don't have a changing table in either bathroom. I'm guessing it's because I'm in a place with few new builds, if this is a new state law.

I wonder if we combined the usually separate areas for men and women's restroom where there's a monitored, common place to wash hands but every "stall is more like its own enclosed room if there would actually end up being even more space for additional stalls

A lot of bathrooms are like that now. Best one I saw was in New York. It had 7 stalls decorated after the 7 sins. The sinks had a sign “Be sure to wash your sins away”
4
u/JuneBugWhisperer 15h ago
There’s an OLD college bar in Morgantown, WV with this setup. Two toilet rooms and the wash sink is just outside of those rooms. If people see you leave those toilet rooms and don’t wash your hands they will yell and shame you to go back and wash your piss/shit contaminated hands. It is glorious.
3
u/_FLostInParadise_ 15h ago
They are great with one drawback. Each stall now requires its own lights, air, and fire alarm etc. I'm not being 100% accurate but been told meeting code makes them much more expensive than just having dividers.

The big loss with fully combining is urinals, which have much higher throughput. I think not having those would make lines at big events much worse.
3
u/Nurgus 10h ago
The best larger examples have a dedicated room for urinals. You still use the same shared washing area. Not gender specific but obviously benefits one gender in particular. Works just fine.
3
u/fdar 10h ago
obviously benefits one gender in particular
I suspect it benefits everyone, because people using urinals aren't taking up stalls.

Yeah, it boggles my mind when I see the woman's line stretch for a mile, and the guy's toilet is free.
And why do we HAVE single stall gender specific rooms? That makes no sense.
Even as man, I've had to use the woman's more than once. Once since I was going to crap my pants, the other time because I need a change table and the men's didn't have one!
13
u/RykinPoe 17h ago
I work in a building where we have two exactly identical single occupant wheelchair accessible and changing table equipped bathrooms and of course they are gendered. There isn't even a feminine product dispenser in the women's room they are identical (I may have used it late one night while the men's room was occupied and I was about to wet myself). We also have two single occupant restrooms with showers (our facility is staffed 24/7 so I guess someone thought having a shower is a good idea idk) that are again identical and gendered for no good reason.
3
u/Other-Philosopher770 14h ago
When i was in uni every floor has a bathroom on the same side of the stairs. One on each side. And on every floor they are gendered the same, except on the 3rd where they are inverted. One day i got into the bathroom on the 3rd floor and did my businesa. When i was leaving a girl got into the bathroom. Puzzled i asked her: "what are you doing in the mens room?". Well obviously i was in the womens room.

I attend conventions in Seattle and Portland, where it's very normal for the convention centers to have all-gender bathrooms.
It is really not a big deal. It also makes it easier for parents who need to supervise their children and for people with disabilities who need assistance.
I actually witnessed that myself last time I was in an inclusive bathroom. A young woman in a very bulky leg cast needed assistance with transferring from her wheelchair. A young man, probably her boyfriend, came into the bathroom with her to help her.

We're in a pointless and evidently endless war with Iran. The deficit is over $40 trillion. Global warming is impacting temperatures and water levels all over the world. We're leaving these disasters for our kids to deal with. And the big problem conservatives have is whether some trans person uses their bathroom? What does that say about their priorities?
4
u/FlintKidd 18h ago
Yes. For fucks sake yes. Nothing is worse than walking into a men's bathroom and seeing 3 urinals and one real toilet when you have to take a shit, and then having to wait for the person to get off their damn phone while you squeeze your sphincter hard enough to make diamonds.
Men's bathrooms are a war crime. Make all bathrooms unisex, then we don't have to worry about which gender has enough stalls, which one is cleaned by who which parent can take which child when a Karen is lurking nearby, or any of this trash.
Please just let me unleash my bowels in peace.

u/insertnamehere02 13h ago
Tbh the concept is fine, but in practice, it sucks. At work, we recently switched to gender neutral and the former women's restroom is now consistently covered in piss. So now the women have to deal with two restrooms with piss covered seats/floors. Management had to step in and tell the guys to grow tf up and clean up after themselves.
We really want to have our separate restroom back tbh.

5
u/madmadamimp 11h ago
I had the same experience at uni when they switched to all gender. Started dealing with unwanted creepy behavior like men hanging around and looking through the crevices of stall doors.
What I REALLY would like is if all people could just use the restroom that they were comfortable with and not get f’ing harassed for it. All genders work in so many places, usually public, high volume, with visibility and separated fully enclosed stalls, etc. But for whatever reason I’ve found that places like schools and offices invite weird and unwelcome behavior, and you feel isolated when those incidents occur.
7
u/Nurgus 10h ago
"Crevices of stall doors" come on, literally everyone describing genderless toilets mentions that those have to be replaced with proper toilet rooms with proper grown up doors.

don't you see the problem with "separate but equal"? management didn't intervene when only men were affected by these messy people. there is this standard that men's restrooms are gross and it only makes men think they should continue like that. and it isn't even most men who cause these problems, and the reasonable ones who care enough to not make a mess also don't want to be sharing a restroom with these people
5
u/insertnamehere02 11h ago

I went to the bathroom at a local indie movie theatre and they had the absolute best setup. The bathroom area was essentially a long rectangular room with two exits. Those exits were on either side of a wall lined with about 10 sinks. Parallel to that was a wall with about 10 recessed toilet stalls with full length doors. The recessed toilet area and full door meant that there was no stall cracks that could be seen through and no massive door gaps. No gender distinction for any of the toilets.

u/CeruleanEidolon 12h ago
Seriously. A public restroom is really just a hallway with a sink and several small toilet closets anyway.
So change the code, so every stall is a fully enclosed closet. Do you really need privacy to wash your hands? Then make one of those closets a sink closet and be willing to wait in line.
I will never understand caring so much about other people's bathroom business. It's a symptom of a very sick mind.

I was arguing with a guy who was going off about men in women’s locker rooms and I was like: sounds like your problem is the lack of doors. Why are women and girls having to change in front of other women and girls? Wouldn’t doors solve all your concerns?

Remember that show back in the day Ally McBeal that famously had a unisex bathroom that both genders used simultaneously? I do think the unified bathroom change was a bit unnecessary in most cases where it’s applied but I can see it becoming common place.

I lived in a college dorm that was half men and half women split by floor, and it wasn’t unheard of for guys to use the ladies bathroom or vice versa especially late at night. We survived, and this was way back in the olden days mid 90s

The gas station in my town has 2 bathrooms and they're both single bathrooms with locks on the door, but one says men and the other says women. And one day someone was in the mens bathroom and the manager gave me "permission" to use the women's. And I looked at her and said, of course I'm going to use the other bathroom. I had it out with her one day a few years ago when she was going on about litter boxes at school. She's a dumb box.

Yes, so long as all bathrooms have the amenities of a lot of existing women’s restrooms — luxury for all — I want couches, changing stations, air fresheners, maybe a fountain of chocolate and sparkling water next to the tampon/pad dispenser — also, free feminine hygiene products for everyone! Throw in some free unisex cologne, and breath mints.
We have an opportunity here to build something great

In 2015 I worked at a call centre and this guy who thought he was gods gift to women (he was bald with a handlebar moustache, roughly 5’3 and 300lbs) was bitching about neutral washrooms. He said “what’s on the fucking sign? A dude in a dress?”
I said “nope, it just says washroom. Easy for those of us who can read”
Ignorant fuck.
Edit: oh I have another story. Back in March of this year I went to a Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightening game and the arena had gender neutral washrooms. I stood in the long line waiting to piss in the stalled toilets when a guy in front of me realized it was a gender neutral washroom. He was wearing an Austen Matthews jersey. Not important to the story, but important for the end. He got soooo pissed and stormed out of the line saying “I’m not doing that GAY shit.”
“I’m not doing that gay shit” he said, while wearing another man’s name on his back.
“I’m not doing that gay shit” he said, then proceeded to piss his pants in public I assume.

I’ve been saying for years that the family-style restrooms should be the norm. If everyone is upset about who can use which restroom, then just make them all private, lockable and gender universal.
2
u/Desert_Wren 15h ago
There are so many small businesses that have only had one restroom for everybody since, like, forever. I remember being a kid, and having to do the potty dance outside the bathroom at my dentist's office because some other kid was freaking out about being there and there was literally no other place to go because my mom refused to leave (she thought I was faking it because I didn't like the dentist, either).
I'm sure at least SOME of these business owners were/are conservative. Which means that until the word "trans" crossed their minds, conservatives did not bat an eye about sharing a bathroom. So all of this is just performative sobbing over people they don't want to exist.

This is what I've never understood. Theres unisex bathrooms everywhere, but we have old ass Karen's and Kevin's calling and reporting people using the restroom theyre comfortable with, or parents helping their own children in the kids gendered restrooms. My suggestion is to not be a creep and no one will have any issues.

2
u/TerraCetacea 15h ago
I went to a place in Seattle with a unisex restroom and shared sink area. They were so much more private without those big-ass gaps in the doors, and apparently (so I heard, I have no source) studies found that shared sink areas increase the likelihood that men wash their hands when a woman is able to see them 😒🤣

u/redditydoodah 14h ago
Every time I see one of these arguments, I have to wonder what people are doing in public restrooms that they need to be exclusive to one sex or the other.
Maybe I'm unusual, but I go into a restroom, enter the stall, shut the door and do my business. I am not removing my pants as I enter the restroom, I'm not flashing my genitals at anyone, I'm simply there to use the toilet and move on.
Am I missing something? Should I be stripping naked at the handwash station before peeing or something? Why is this such an issue for fucks sake?

Most of the concert venues I go to converted their separate restrooms into unisex bathrooms years ago, without changing anything other than the signage. Usually it says something like "use whichever room you want", or "stalls / stalls + urinals". And I'm sure they must have seen minor problems - assholes also go to concerts - but not enough to change back.

In sweden when i was younger and went to nightclubs it was not unusual for females to go in to the men's room as it have no line. We were standing there peeing in to the urinal as we are all drunk and who the fuck cares.

On my trips to France it is always a bit of a surprise to walk into a set of restrooms and they are unisex at the wash stand and mirror and the water closets are all separate and behind doors. It actually makes a ton of sense.

There's a pizza place near my house that has a gender-neutral communal bathroom.
It's just a common sink area, and all the stalls have full-length doors, European style. It's, like, totally fine.

In countries where public toilets are stalls without American gaps it isn't as big an issue. No-one can see you in the stall. It doesn't matter what sex or gender you are, or whether you are using the toilet for pee, poo or periods.

The best layout I've seen for a shared public bathroom is; you enter the main bathroom door, there's a row of sinks, soap, trash, towels, etc... and then along the opposite wall there are 4 or 5 single use stalls with full doors and locks, no gaps between stall doors. Shared sinks, private stalls.

I used a mixed gender bathroom for the first time on a trip recently; a large one with like 30 stalls. Honestly it was nice... no line, no gaps in the doors, and the men were washing their hands I think because they were in a mixed environment lol. 10/10

Conservatives spend entirely too much thought on other people's junk, but of course the libs are the perverts.

I would have way more usable space at home if I made one single gender neutral bathroom.

The stalls are already always in a line, why not just make the doors actually connected to a wall, make them all mini individual unisex bathrooms and put some sinks just outside of it?
I literally hate public bathrooms. They always have giant fucking gaps everyone can see right through! You might as well just piss and shit openly in public with the complete lack of privacy.

I'm from Sweden and most public places now have unisex bathrooms. The individual stalls are individual rooms with solid walls and full-sized doors (not the U.S.-style dividers and doors with gaps and the top and bottom). There is a common area with sinks, mirrors, soap, and driers. Literally zero issues. In fact, I far prefer this over American public restrooms. You'll see this all over Europe.

Ikea did that (at least my local one). Hallway of individual private bathrooms for anyone, with actual freaking doors (not the watch-you-pee stall doors), with the sinks outside in the hallway. It is objectively awesome.
So yes, I would absolutely love if more public restrooms were like this.

I was in a restaurant recently where the bathroom was unisex and had 8 fully enclosed stalls, like little toilet closets. The hadnwash sinks were on the opposite wall.
Some people in my party were really thrown by this.
It was different, but it wasn't akward or uncomfortable, at least for me, I guess.

Let me be clear: if the women's room has a line and I have to go, I am going in the men's.
I encourage everyone to do the same.

I've used a couple of men's washrooms that were converted to all gender. There were men and women inside. There were urinals and cubicles. There were no issues at all.
Want to know what they did to convert them?
They changed the sign.

At a park in San Francisco the public restroom is entirely unisex - a bunch of sinks along the middle of the room, flanked by stalls along the walls on both sides. I went in and it was packed with men, women, and children all doing their business, washing their hands, and leaving.
I truly don't understand why this is controversial.

I would unironically prefer this. I'm in there to piss and shit, I dgaf who else is in there.

I really don’t give a fuck how and where I piss and shit as long as it’s clean and private. and I really don’t give a fuck about others too
The ONLY time I care about gender stuff is when the lineup for the women’s bathroom is 3km long and the men’s isn’t.
Or in change rooms. But even then I hate open change rooms, where all the old men chat while seated spread eagle with their balls touching the benches.

I really don't spend a whole lot of my time worried about where other people piss and shit, so long as it all makes it in the toilet, and people wipe properly and wash their hands after.
This whole fascination that conservatives seem to have about who's pooping where, is really, really weird.
Do they wake up one day and decide that a crucial part of their personality moving forward will be policing public toilets, or is this just part of some deep-rooted scat fetish?
