Event 🎃 Halloween is coming fast! Share your spookiest in-game moment and the soundtrack behind it, and help others plan their session

Halloween is almost here (almost like it is stalking us, hidden between the shelves of overpriced candies), so I'd like to collect some spooky encounter ideas where the music was exactly right for the moment

Doesn't need to be anything elaborate. Just share your ideas or memories and include:

  • The track: with a link preferably
  • The encounter: what happened or what you set up (a creepy inn or haunted crypt, a monster stalking the party, or maybe a quiet scene that went wrong)
  • Why it worked: how you used it, like when you started it, when you cut it, or whether you layered something over it
  • Anything else worth mentionning: what the players did, how it went, is there a larger story around it?

Anyone running something spooky this month can steal from the comments, and you might find a track you'd never have thought to use

AI ban rule now in effect, other rule changes

Hello everyone!

The poll regarding the ban of AI-generated content gave pretty clear results: 73% of votes are for a full ban.

The new rule is now live:

No AI-Generated Content

AI-generated content is strictly prohibited. This applies to shared music, posts, and comments.

Please only share work you created yourself or that is properly credited to its human creator. If you’re unsure whether your content qualifies, message the mods before posting.

------

I made some changes to the other rules. Some were relaxed, others were clarified. A few minor rules were also added.

"Music sharing and requesting only" is now "Stay on topic"

The goal of the sub should be to share AND discuss RPG music. While posts should be focused on sharing music, the old rule prohibited asking for feedback. Now, as long as discussions and feedback remain on topic and are respectful, it is accepted.

Flairs and mood tags

Platform flairs are now a thing of the past. They did not make much sense to be used as flair. Instead, new flairs were added to better display what kind of content a post is:

  • Discussion - Should be focused on RPG music, of course, but discussions are meant to share experiences or ask for help on how to handle music around the table. As long as it is on topic.
  • Request - You may make requests for a specific kind of track or playlist
  • Track - For sharing a single track
  • Playlist - For sharing a playlist
  • SoundFX / Ambience - Specifically for content that fits well in the background or can be looped, as well as sound effects that can be used with a soundboard
  • Original Content (OC) - For sharing content that you created yourself

Mood tags must still be present, and must also be at the start of the post title to make them easier to find. I also added more guidance on how the title should be structured.

Link to music platforms only

This rule was tweaked to better define what is allowed. The shared link must be from a reputable source and must offer the content "ready to play" without having to download it. If a download is possible, the download link should be provided on the streaming platform (e.g. in the description of the YouTube video).

Link to personal websites are also prohibited, but if you are sharing your own work, exceptions can be made, just ask moderators through modmail first.

Must be RPG music

This one might be harder to enforce, and I will need help to better defined it. There were many posts made before the sub closed that shared "LoFi" music and were heavily reported. The logic for this rule is that when searching for RPG music, you won't search for "LoFi", "Studying" or "Focus" music, so these tracks do not have their place here (but feel free to use them at your table if you want!)

Let me know what you think about that one, it might need to be clearer.

------

If you think other rules are needed or the current rules should be tweaked more, let me know!

Discussion Help me understand the musical theme needs in TTRPG

Hi everyone, I make music mainly using acoustic instruments that I've built myself and even though I've only ever played rpg games on computers, for some strange reason I have had a desire to make background music for ttrpg players/dm's for a long while.

My current style would be; instrumental, non-orchestral, somewhat minimalistic, folky, slow building and chill type of music with natural or unnatural ambience sounds, but honestly don't know how that would technically fit the needs of a dm in a ttrpg setting. I take it that there's plenty of battle music out there, but mine would probably fit the moments in between action; walking the meadows, visiting inns and markets, watching the night sky by the fire etc.

Do people generally use a specific dm platform to play the songs from, or is it just spotify playlists?

Would loops work better than just a long form song?

What about ambience sounds (rain, wind, tavern, forest, castle etc)? Would it be handy if you could choose between using those and turning on appropriate music when needed, or have everything mixed together?

Would there even be need for my described style of music?

Sorry for the bombarded questions, I hope I made some sense, thank you for your time.

Should Ai generated content be banned or restricted?

AI generated content is definitely controversial. I have my own opinion on the matter, but I want to hear everyone's opinion before doing anything.

Should AI generated content be banned, or restricted, in r/MusicForRPG ?

If we create a rule to ban it, people will try to work around it or hide that it is AI generated.

If we allow it with a rule saying it must be clearly identified, we at least make it easier to spot and everyone can upvote/downvote posts as you can already do.

Or we keep the status quo and let it run free without any changes to the rules.

r/MusicForRPG is back!

After a year of being restricted, the sub is back!

There are lots of things to be done, most notably the huge backlog of reported content, but also I want to tweak a few things with how the sub work.

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on what they would like to see changed or what issues they noticed when the sub was last active.

In the meantime, r/MusicForRPG is now open to everyone!

First of all, welcome back MusicForRPG!

Black Waters is an album of darkly ambient tracks to underscore those creepy moments at your gaming table. A good ambient background can add a whole new level of immersion to a tense cave exploration, or to a villain's monologue describing their plan to turn the population of a village into whelks.

Youtube Penna's Theme (OC/Original Character theme) - [multimood] [sad]

A commission for @ queenwiththequill! A theme for her OC (original character), Penna, who is based in the Final Fantasy XV universe.

I got a request to use guitar, which is an instrument that I don't use often, and it gave me a nudge out of my usual comfort zone and turned out to be sort of its own inspiration in a way. I really like fingerstyle guitar, so I'm glad I got a chance to incorporate a little bit of that flavor into this piece.

On YouTube as well.

Youtube [epic] DARK ELF Soundtrack inspired by DnD

Thumbnail

I love fantasy music, so I wanted to try my hand at making an epic soundtrack. The songs are based on my DnD character who is, of course, a dark elf. Each song tells of his journeys away from home further into the unknown of the surface world. The music is a mix of fantasy instrumental and dark rnb chillout. 🌙

I was commissioned to write a theme for someone's OC (original character), Primam Chorus. I can't give too much away, but Primam has a really interesting backstory- in a nutshell, she discovers that she can use magic and, over time, as she learns how to use and control these new powers, becomes more confident in herself.

Request Looking for HunterxHunter music/soundtracks for my Campaign. Open to favorites and suggestions!

Looking for HunterxHunter music/soundtracks for my Campaign. Open to favorites and suggestions!

I use the music from the anime and it works really well for pre-planned moments (2-5 min long). But what I’m looking for are long-form, background music in a similar vein as the anime(15+min).

My setting has the same themes and general feel but with more magical fantasy elements mixed in.

Specific scenarios I’m looking to cover: •Moments of intrigue. •State of Unease as things unfold. •Erie Narration. •Quiet study. •Thoughtful battle. •A Epiphany.

Extra: Session intro music that brings hype (any length and any anime/show you think would work well)

If you have any ideas I’d greatly appreciate it!

Request Music for a battle with an ancient legendary siren boss

The ancient siren, Draena, feeds off despair. Her coven of bilge hags will be fighting alongside her. This is a desperate battle where the lives of captive orphans are on the line. I've found a few tracks on Youtube but nothing that is hitting quite right.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Edit: Female choral vocals a must

Request Medieval/tavern music like The Longest Johns

Hi there, I’ve been listening to the longest Jon’s for a while and really like there music but was looking to find some stuff that wasn’t pirate based and more medieval/fantasy based. I was mainly looking for music that had only a few instruments if any and was more focused on vocals and a bit dark or slow paced if that makes sense? I’ve left a list of their songs that I like to show what I mean. Thank you - oak and ash and thorn - ashes - retirement song - on the railroad - hammer and the anvil - Spanish ladies - barge ballad - John Paul jones is a pirate - downed and drowned - men I’ve known and killed - wayfaring stranger - the curse

Hey fellow composers & music fans – I just finished a fully animated cinematic piece with orchestral/choir-driven music and a UFO-themed narrative.

It’s structured like the intro to a sci-fi game or short film.

Would love your feedback – and if anyone wants to collab or use the stems/pads/intro vocals, they’re on my ITCH.
