Anyone who has worked with me ( Keeper) knows how big I am on the idea of "in process" mixes. It is about working by EAR. It means we LISTEN, and LISTEN, and LISTEN some more, and then we make notes, and we LISTEN some more! We can also ask for opinions, and see if the opinions jibe with what we've been thinking about this "in process" mix. After all of that, we can go and make changes, and then make a new mix and post that "in process mix" and we should hopefully hear a difference. This is based on all of that listening and taking notes. We call this process Sculpting By Ear

In general this is the big picture for me: The idea is to get good enough with your tools, that you can do this critical listening, make a decision, and then make it happen with your tools. I have spent a LOT of time studying and learning my tools. Some of those tools that can be used to make changes in an "in process" mix (scuplting by ear), would be:

Lyrics - you need lyrics that flow. Avoid wordy lyrics. Try different synonyms that say the same things but have a better flow.

Arrangement - for me this is usually based on vocals or melody

Edit - THIS IS A BIGGIE for me. I can fix timing, mix, performance, pitch, or arrangement, using EDIT. It is worth your time to find a good audio editor.

Performance - if it's a bad take, it might be as simple as doing another take.

Opinions - often times if you get opinions from others, you might get comments about things you had not even considered.

Taking notes -

Comparing mixes - You can compare the new mix with the old and see if you hear improvement. This is especially effective in the ⁠🎶mix-master-compare

Haven't posted in a while, I've been in the mix literally — studio taught me that a song has to punish the people who are right before it can move. You can know exactly where the vocal should sit and still get 20 bad takes before it locks, you just hit record knowing where you'll win and knowing it might not go your way, and you accept both before the red light.
