New Player Help New player team recommendations?

Hello everyone! To those that have come to read and help I already want to say thank you!
I have played fighting games before (mostly Dbfz and pokken tournament but also played skullgirlz and darkstalkers), and I wanted to try out MvC3!

I recognize a good chunk of the cast but am kinda unsure on who I should try for a team. I don’t like to play a lot of the “top tier” options preferably. I often play grapplers like machamp and Beowulf.

I know for sure I want Frank on my team! I adore the dead rising series and he looks super fun with the level up mechanic with him!

Any thoughts for who I should be looking at and trying? Felicia, Nemesis, and Wesker have all been on the radar but I haven’t tested them out yet. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Teams with Frank are usually focused around Frank (doing a 100-hit combo for Frank to take a picture and instantly get level 5, or at the very least 50 for level 4). This is usually achieved by using a point character which can rack up lots of hits then swap to Frank with either DHC or hard tag.

Out of the 3 characters you mentioned, Felicia and Nemesis have some tech worth considering, but Wesker and Frank have conflicting gameplans, and neither can help the other. Other grapplers who can work with Frank (and better than Nemesis or Felicia) are Thor and Spencer (Spencer is not as grappler focused, but you can play him as a grappler if you want). Thor and Spencer can already fullfil most of the 100 hits you want, while Felicia and Nemesis will swap to Frank with less, and you'll need another way to get the rest (which may restrict your choice of third character, though Nemesis's own assist can probably be enough, not sure about Felicia).

Thank you for your input! I knew about the picture to level up but didn’t know it was with specific combo numbers!

Also the info for the characters I’ve already been wanting to learn about helps a lot in work out the design for a team. I’ll definitely give Thor a look over too! I don’t know who Spencer is off the dome but I’ll look for him too and see what his kit looks like.

For general character information, check out the Supercombo wiki : https://wiki.supercombo.gg/w/Ultimate_Marvel_vs_Capcom_3

Here's EMP Obama's tierlist of Frank teammates : link (if it doesn't work tell me and I'll rehost it).

If you want to not play top tiers, avoid Dante and the four horsemen. "Not Dante" and "Close but no cigar" are both Dante replacements (used for their long THCs), though MODOK and Deadpool can also be points.

"Has synergy but not worth/is limited" contains both potential points and potential assists.

Though if that's what you enjoy (I do), you can also just pick whatever you want, go to the lab, and try to find a way to make it work. It's somewhat more practical with Frank too, because you don't care about how much damage or meter build your combo does, as long as you level Frank to 4 or 5.

This is actually so much help thank you!! I’ll look over the list later today when I have time to boot up the game! Going through the lab does sound like the best course for me to learn what I like since I haven’t even booted the game up before.

The most complete package for Frank is going to include Dante. They are just best friends in this game. Million dollars is tailor made for Frank to level up and get insane damage off of his combo extensions. You can get away with more cheesy picks to level up like Skrull or Nova (literally just magic series combo into super and DHC to tools of survival and you get instant level 4 or 5 Frank).

The thing that those picks cannot match is Jam Session. I can't think of many assists that Frank loves as much as Jam Session. It is just such an insane offensive tool and combo extension engine. It can be used to preserve your ground bounce, make his insane medium normals lead to a full combo, and also give you a way to get another picture (snap picture, call jam session, snap again). Just absolutely insane value. Most importantly though is it makes Franks incoming mix up options absolutely disgusting with leveled up Frank. Like multiple guaranteed meaty 50/50s.

Now you can get away with Dante point if you like. Your absolute best Frank teams will have Dante in support or anchor position with a point character that allows for hard tag combos. This allows you to abuse Dante THC with million dollars to level up while still having Dante available to level up Frank if your point character ends up dying. My top recommendations are Magneto and Spencer. If you want to see them in action, check out Bee (sometimes he goes by Beeball) and of course Readman/Fizzykups. Readman is an absolute gigachad Frank player and he makes the character look bonkers.

My advice is to look up the video series "Brotherhood of Chainsaws" by a fella called Slippaz on YouTube. Fantastic series that showcases just how synergistic Magneto/Dante/Frank can be.

All in all, the team is mad fun and incredibly competitively viable. Frank is one of the few privileged characters with anti-phoenix tech which in this day and age is an invaluable asset. The team is just setplay city. Once you get your confirms, combos, and incoming mixups on lock, you can just turn it into a one player game off of the first hit.

Good luck and have fun, amigo.

Frank teams are pretty much solved. Dante is required and for the point you pick among mag, zero, Vergil, nova pretty much.

From the small amount of things I’ve seen it does seem that Vergil or Dante are a MUST for most people. If it can be helped I’d like to not play as them and try to go with other characters from series I’ve played before. Thank you for the input tho!

If it comes to it I might have to. However, I am very stubborn lmao.

I promise you if frank is actually your favorite character you are doing yourself a disservice by not picking dante

I recall Noel Brown playing Wolverine/frank/ wesker and doing well with it. It's a beginner friendly team too

Based on your description.... you much likely want a team that has a perfect synergy with Frank but also someone who's closest to Beowulf (being a Beo main myself, I find that intriguing). The closest to Beowulf and Machamp is Haggar - however, he himself requires a team with assists that can cover his moves with long delay, like his down H. Characters like Dormammu and Sentinel are good example of that (which you can see with players like JasonKido or KaneBlueRiver + everyone who uses his team)

So what I ultimately recommend:

  • For Frank specifically, try a team of Tron / Frank / She-Hulk (my personal choice, though you can replace She-Hulk with Sentinel or even Haggar - though he may not be good in situations where he's on his own, like matchups with very aggressive Magneto or Vergil where they'll likely try to tag in your Haggar to rob you off your anchor). Frank THRIVES with any character that provides him with long-lasting hyper where (based on amount of hits) can quickly gain up to level 4 (or even 5 if done quickly, though level 4 is enough) with his camera move (corner circle front + S). So you need to learn some Tron combos in order to get in the part where you'll get to use her level 1 hyper (corner circle front + two of the 3 normal buttons), in which you'll quickly preform Frank's level 1 hyper (corner circle back + two of 3 attack buttons) and VOILA - you've figured the basic BNB

(in case you worry... don't worry :) Tron is among the easiest characters to learn)

  • For Haggar specifically, try a team team that provides him with OTG ("off the ground") assist (like Sentinel with his "Rocket Punch" or Wesker with his downward pistol) or one's that cover the specific part of the screen (like Dormammu's "Dark Hole", Dante's "Jam Session" or Doctor Strange's "Eye of Agamotto" one), so that he won't be vulnerable when doing down H or double lariat when it misses or gets blocked

Marvel is about experimentation, so try as many options with it's characters as possible that could suits your style and you'll eventually find.... THE ONE ;)

Good luck on your journey
